Glass Fusing and Slumping for Beginners and Improvers

Glass fusing and slumping workshops.

These workshops are in Lytham St. Annes on The Fylde Coast in Lancashire.

A beginner would typically learn how to score and break glass safely before cutting their own glass to use for learning 4 or 5 basic techniques of glass fusing. After a home-made lunch they would then go on to design and make two or three larger pieces from bowls, mirror frames, hangings, free-standing panels.

Returning students will be given a directed piece in the morning as a refresher, be taught a technique new to them, and be guided through the design and making of their chosen pieces.

Work would be ready to collect usually within two weeks.

Jean and Janice have decided that group workshops cannot be delivered safely for the remainder of 2020 but have scheduled some for the spring of 2021. We reserve the right to cancel these at any time if necessary due to the COVID 19 situation.

Cancellation and a full refund can be obtained up to 2 weeks before the course starts. Start dates may be amended on request.

What's included in the price?

All tools, safety equipment, materials, firing of work. We also include a hearty home made lunch, home-made bread and cakes and refreshments all day.

We will endeavour to cater for any dietary requirements a student may have. Our vegan pear and ginger muffins have become quite a hit!

I had such a lovely day with the small group of people and two friendly and approachable tutors, nothing was too much trouble for them and they listened to my ideas and told me how to achieve them. I'd highly recommend this course, I'd never worked with glass before so was a bit apprehensive but was soon put at ease by everyone. The homemade lunch was delicious too.

Response from JJ Fused Glass:

Thank you Sally. Your review is much appreciated. We’re so glad you enjoyed the day and the company. We hope you are able to come to collect your art work and see the things other people created over the weekend.

Many thanks to you, Jean and Janice for a fabulous experience at my first fused glass workshop. It was a treat for our friend Jane's 'special' birthday as you know, but we all had a super time. You were both very patient with us all, clear with your instructions and tuition and you never made us feel rushed. Although we were concentrating hard, ensuring we were taking everything in, the time just flew by, which is always a good sign that you are enjoying yourself. The lunch was delicious and we all went back for more!!
Thankfully we didn't have any breakages and we are all happy with our creations. Many thanks again Alison x

Response from JJ Fused Glass:

Thank you Alison, for this generous review. It was a pleasure to meet you all and help to celebrate Jane’s birthday.
I’m sorry I couldn’t be there when you collected your work, but we are both really pleased you enjoyed the day and are happy with your art work.

Went back for my third session today and again absolutely loved it. Drinks and biscuits on arrival and chance for a quick chat with the group then on to the day's fun. After a cutting refresher making two snowflake hanging decorations, it was time to decide on the morning's project. Lots of helpful ideas and explanations on how to put my ideas onto paper to plan them tips along the way. Then a yummy homemade lunch then more time for another piece.

Again a great day with fabulous teachers and a lovely group. Everyone made such lovely pieces, I can’t wait for the updates on them going in the kilns. See you when we pick the finished creations up then booking next workshop.

Would recommend to anyone wanting to have a go. You will be amazed at what you can learn and create even on your first day. Thanks Janice and Jean and see you soon x

Response from JJ Fused Glass:

Thank you, Berni, for this lovely review. We really enjoyed you attending our workshop again. We loved the things you wanted to make and can't wait for you to pick them up!

Just arrived home after my second time with Jean and Janet. The tutors are both friendly and professional and have a wealth of knowledge, the teacher to student ratio is a maximum of 1:4 so there is always help available!
I learnt some skills in the morning and completed 4 coasters, each using a different method, and in the afternoon, I completed a fruit bowl and a wall plaque.
The lunch was superb !! A choice of 2 home made soups, with a choice of home made bread, and a selection of cakes.
I am looking forward to returning to pick up my pieces, and will definitely be booking to come again .
I recommend this workshop to everyone - you won’t be disappointed !

Response from JJ Fused Glass:

Thank you Julie for your kind review. It was good to see you again. We’re pleased you enjoyed your second visit and hope it helped to cement some of the techniques involved. We are always as excited as you to see the results of your labours.
Kind regards

A very enjoyable day as a beginner. The time just flew by with Jean and Janice providing their expertise, help and guidance whilst letting the students do their own thing. Learned numerous techniques in the morning which you could put into practice with your own ideas in the afternoon.
Lunch in the garden was lovely.
Had a laugh trying to test the tin in the cupboard 😃.
Maximum of 8 on the course so the tutors can provide as much time as you need. Will be returning.

Response from JJ Fused Glass:

Many thanks for your review Linda. We’re pleased you enjoyed the day and the way we teach. It’s always good when the weather is nice enough for lunch in the garden. Time in the Harry Potter cupboard looking for the tin side can be a challenge 😂
Kind regards

My sister and I attended a class (our second, and definately not the last!) on Saturday. Once again completely enjoyed our day, started with a little refresher on what we were doing and then Jean & Janice encouraged our creative inner selves to shine thru! If you want a great day with excellent end result - sign up here!!

I attended this one day course today and was amazed at how much we achieved and how generous the tutors are with their time, expertise and materials. As a complete beginner I was taught 5 different techniques during the morning and was able to experiment with my own ideas during the afternoon. Jean and Janice were always ready to help and advise but were never intrusive and offered support whenever it was requested. I enjoyed the day so much (including the delicious home-made soda bread at lunchtime!) that I've already booked two more days....
Thanks for a fantastic experience. I'm really looking forward to seeing the finished pieces!

Response from JJ Fused Glass:

Thank you so much for this lovely review. We really appreciate it. It was a pleasure to meet you. You were so open and receptive to the materials and techniques which were all new to you. What an amazing experience! I really enjoyed the one day course with Janice and Jean, and have come away with a huge number of ideas I would really like to try in the future. The course was very well organised and paced. Janice and Jean demonstrated different techniques very clearly and were on hand to explain and support our efforts throughout the day; guiding but also allowing exploration. I was able to make bigger pieces in the afternoon and try out another technique. A homemade lunch (soup, freshly baked bread and cakes) was a real bonus.

Response from JJ Fused Glass:

Thank you so much for your kind words, Margaret. It was a pleasure to meet you both. I’m so glad you enjoyed the way we teach - and our cooking! We look forward to you collecting your pieces of art, and your return for more exploration. Janice.

Attend this Worksop yesterday. Didn’t know what to expect but wow 😮 it was fantastic and I certainly got my husbands monies worth from my birthday voucher. Talented teachers, time well spent with the group and individually. Didn’t know I was so talented in making my glass pieces and I can’t wait to see the finishing pieces. I’m sure I’ll be back again next year. Oh, and home made soup and bread too. Thank you Jean and Janice.

Response from JJ Fused Glass:

Thank you Suzanne. We’re so pleased you enjoyed your introduction to fused glass. It was lovely to meet you. We’re sure you’ll love your pieces of fused glass when they have been fired.

Just spent another lovely day with the glass fusing ladies of Lytham. Such a great value for money course - i've made half a dozen or so unique pieces of art (so that's Christmas sorted!) and enjoyed a tasty lunch - what more could you ask for - marvellous!

Have done this class twice now and what can i say besides amazing. The range of items you can make is unbelievable. A thoroughly enjoyable class with two incredibly talented teachers. The time They give the students is such that you never feel pushed to one side. They are always on hand to give advice and to ensure that the end results are well worth the effort. I would recommend this class to anyone who wants to give glass fusing a go even if you are not sure you need to do this class. You will achieve and make something you never dreamed you could.

Thank you Jo, for your kind review. It was great to see you yesterday when you collected your lovely pieces of glass art. We’re looking forward to your next visit!

As a complete beginner I attended the course on 29.05.18. The two tutors showed us a range of techniques, explaining everything in detail as we went along, and keeping a very watchful eye on what we were doing to ensure a pleasing outcome. They also valued our efforts and paid careful attention to firing our pieces. I am thrilled with what I made and I have signed up for another day in the Autumn. Thank you so much.
P.S. Lovely lunch too.

I was an absolute beginner, the teachers were extremely patient and encouraged me to try and do things that I thought might be beyond my capabilities. I have made 7 items from a simple coaster to cutting petals and making a 'Poppy Bowl'. As the class was on 'Remembrance Sunday' I will always look at this and remember a really wonderful, but tiring day with other like minded friendly people.5

I have attended this course on a number of occasions and I love going back. Mainly for the friendly and knowledgeable instructors and the fresh bread and home-made chutneys!
Would highly recommend this class to anyone. You will be amazed at what you can achieve even on the first try. It's highly addictive and after the first go you'll be bursting with new ideas to try out. It's a really fun environment, made so by the hosts, in a lovely part of the world. Make a weekend of it :)

Thoroughly enjoyed the day, can't believe how much we got through in such a short time. Janice and Jean are fabulous tutors, patient and so knowledgeable. They tailored their support to each student's needs and fostered individual creativity from the start.

Have just spent a Fantastic day with Jean & Janice at their workshop. The group of people that attended were brilliant and made myself and the other two newbies feel very welcome. It's like sitting in a room that is a cross between Aladdin's cave and an alchemists want to try everything but don't know the formula !! The ladies were great at explaining the basics (including the very important health and safety) and soon had us working on our first piece. I am still chanting the mantra of 'tin sandwich' and keeping my fingers crossed that the pieces I worked on turn out ok ! After a delicious lunch of homemade soups and breads followed by cake , we carried on with making , in my case a bowl ( other people worked on different shapes) All too soon it was time to finish. I can't wait to see how my first attempts turn out. O.k. I hold my hand up , I am hooked , I have booked to go again. I can't call myself a glass fusionista yet but who knows !!!!!

Thank you Jean and Janette both so much for a fantastic informative fun day. I've learnt so much today my head hurts and can't wait to see the outcome of my efforts and just hope I got my 'tin sandwiches' right! Jean and Janette were brill and patient taking us newbies through the basics with a series of different techniques for us try with flexibility for us to adapt. By the end of the session we were flying solo creating master pieces (I hope) with plenty of guidance and advise on hand when required. It was amazing how much material there was available for us to use and experiment with, in such a friendly and relaxed environment. Also worth mentioning was the super lunch with homemade soups, bread and cakes not to mention fresh coffee. Can't wait to return for another session, so many ideas to try. Thank you.

Sue Andrews - - #5084

Thank you both for a fantastic day, I didn't know what to expect except that I'm not very arty so thought I'd not achieve very much. You put us all at ease right from the start, the instruction was easy to follow and the day was well organised but also made flexible to suit us. I came home feeling very pleased with myself. The lunch was delightful. I will be recommending this to friends.

Been going to the classes for over two years now, every time there is something new to learn and lovely people to meet. Janice and Jean are really nice ladies and excellent tutors, love their food and their enthusiasm never wanes, even when we test their patience!! Well worth trying, you'll be surprised at what you can make.

Ann-Marie Mulcahy - - #3355

Can't recommend this course and the lovely ladies that run it. I have been taking their courses for over 2 years and despite now having my own kiln, I still attend their courses.

I love that I get to meet up with other "regulars" as well as making new friends. At every course we learn new tools and techniques, have a fabulous lunch and still have lots of time to make our own designs.

The venue is perfect, the tools and safety equipment all provided and in excellent condition. They have every possible colour of glass powders, hundreds of stencils to chose from and loads of ideas to help you produce some great end products. I have personally made: coasters, large and small plates, table top, light shade, candle holders, spoon rest, wall hangings, decorative waves and loads more.

Tried others courses but this is the best one by far!

In-person course
Phill - - #3277

Lovely people providing a warm welcome. They provide lots of materials for you to choose from and so you are really limited only by your imgaination.

Start of with how to safely cut glass, and moves to different methods to bring life to your work.

A vegitarian lunch is provided which was truly delicious.

The course is tailoured to suit those attending so whether your a beginner or more advanced between the two tutors you have your artistic and techincal skills improved.

My sister and I attended on 15th February 2015, for a beginners day. We were amazed by how much we got to do during the day. Definitely recommend this day to everyone. My sister and I want to book onto another now!
