Beginners Fused Glass workshops at the Creative Chameleon Studio in Cragg Vale, Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire.
This workshop is ideal for those who fancy a relaxing and peaceful day of creativity. It is a brilliant workshop which allows participants to be introduced to the wonderful world of glass fusing. The techniques used are easy to pick up and you will create a range of beautiful glass items that can be treasured or given away as special gifts.
During the workshop you will make a set of dichroic glass jewellery combining two pieces of jewellery - pendant, brooch, ring, earrings, cuff links, you decide. You will hand-decoupage a jewellery box to keep your beautiful sparkly jewels in! On the workshop you will learn how to score and cut glass to make a hanging star and you will also create a coaster and a slump dish!
I offer these workshops to individuals and private groups, they are designed for art and craft lovers, beginners or experienced crafters, and for those who simply want to enjoy a creative day out. The workshops have proved popular with mothers and daughters, couples and family and friends who wish to spend some quality time together. Lots of participants come on their own and enjoying meeting friendly, new people.
The workshops are run from the light and airy Creative Chameleon studio in Cragg Vale, Mytholmroyd, the neighbouring town to Hebden Bridge in the Calder Valley. The Calder Valley is a great place to visit or make a weekend of it if you are travelling far. Hebden Bridge is a quirky town filled with independent shops, cafes, pubs and restaurants. It is well known for its exciting art, craft and alternative music scene. It is also a great place if you enjoy nature, walking and exploring the countryside.

This class is so much fun! Colourful little glass birds that transform like magic in the kiln…what’s not to like?! Melanie is a lovely, fantastically patient teacher and there is a huge choice of designs to play with. Let your inner child run free😀. I’ve done several classes at Crafts in the Valley and enjoyed every single one - so much so I just keep booking! This will be another one I’d definitely do again - what better way to spend a morning or afternoon? The class sizes are small, the venue peaceful with a happy, creative vibe, and Covid safety has been considered so everyone can just relax and enjoy some creative escapism! Highly recommended💚
Response from Crafts in the Valley:Thank you Miriam! It is always such a pleasure having you in the class. You always create such inspiring work. xx
We finally got to attend this class recently, which I'd bought as a Christmas present for my mum, after many covid-related reschedulings (which Melanie was great about). Mum and I had a wonderful day –Melanie is an excellent teacher and the class environment is really relaxing. I especially enjoyed having so much creative freedom with our designs. The resulting lanterns are gorgeous and I have been wearing the earrings I made ever since. Even the biscuits were excellent. Highly recommend and will be attending another class soon I am sure. Thanks Melanie!
Response from Crafts in the Valley:Thank you for the fab review! Your lanterns were especially beautiful xx
My granddaughter and I have just completed the fused glass lantern course with Melanie and we both loved every minute of it. This is our first glass fusing course, but it won’t be our last with Melanie. The workshop had a very relaxed atmosphere and Melanie is a great tutor, who explains everything very clearly and patiently.
Tea and proper coffee was available (and cake and biscuits) were available throughout the course.
Will be booking our next course as soon as I have finished this review.
Thank you Melanie for the wonderful introduction to glass fusing.
Response from Crafts in the Valley:Hello Phil,
I highly recommend Melanie's glass fusion workshops after attending two of them with a third to follow in the New Year. Her workshops are fun, informative and very creative and Melanie is a fantastic tutor.
My friend & had a lovely half- day workshop learning how to decorate a glass wave.
It was very absorbing & the time just flew past.
Would highly recommend this.
So sad that we can't do the Christmas workshop due to lockdown, but we'll be back !!!
Response from Crafts in the Valley:Great to hear you'll be back to do more fused glass! Thanks for the review xx
A workshop session with Melanie is a joy and an absolute tonic for the soul. The atmosphere is lovely, Melanie is a wonderful teacher and the set up re Covid is so well planned that this is the only workshop setting where I have felt confident & safe. I have been to a few classes now with more booked when lockdown ends and I can’t wait. Can’t recommend highly enough. 💖
Response from Crafts in the Valley:Thanks for the review Miriam, it's great fun having you on the workshops x
We went as a family group for the day class. Had a great time. Highly recommended. Going back for another session.
Attended the beginners fused glass course and thoroughly enjoyed it - never done anything like this before and felt well supported and encouraged to make some lovely pieces. Melanie was very knowledgable and accommodating throughout the day - would definitely recommend this course - fantastic !!
We had a fantastic day on Saturday doing the beginners fused glass workshop. Melanie is an amazing teacher & sets you right at ease. Her enthusiasm is infectious & makes a non-artistic person like myself feel all creative. We made a coaster, a slump dish, a star & some jewellery & it was really good fun. I can’t wait to see how they’ve come out when we collect them. I loved it so much that I’ve booked to go again & make something else. May have to attend the Christmas workshop too. I can’t recommend this class enough (there’s coffee & cake too)
Really enjoyed this class. I bought it for a friend for her birthday and was really impressed with all of it. Everything felt very safe and Melanie has adapted really well to the changes faced with COVID. I’m an absolute beginner to stuff like this, but Melanie was so thorough in talking us through that I felt really confident in this class and I’m over the moon with how my bowl turned out. Already can’t wait to sign up to another class!
Thank you Melanie for such a wonderful day learning how to make and design fused glass.
It was very well organised and Melanie is very welcoming and puts you at ease as pure beginners in fused glass.
And it’s in a lovely setting as well.
It was such a fantastic birthday present from my son.
Thoroughly recommend you try one of the many classes Melanie holds at Hebden Bridge.
Had a really lovely time. Wonderful location, Mel is very patient and encouraging and I am very please with my fused glass bowl.
The Beginners Glass Fusion course is delightful! What a lovely way to spend a day. Melanie is a fab tutor and her enthusiam for the craft she teaches is very evident. After Melanie went through the materials and processes, we couldn't wait to get started.
The class was very small, just the three of us due to Covid restrictions and every care was taken to ensure that we were safe.
Melanie's studio is full of inspiration, I wanted to have a go at making everything I saw but of course I couldn't and which is why I'll be booking another workshop.
The day passed by far too quickly, but by the end of it I had completed a star, a coaster, a slump dish and two pieces of jewellery.
Don't hesitate in booking this workshop if you have an interest in glass fusion, it's great fun and you won't be disappointed.
Just attended a beginners course, the first post-lockdown. Was impressed not only with the teaching but also the efforts to keep everyone safe. Thoroughly enjoyed the morning experience. Was so engrossed, forgot to eat the biscuits/goodies provided. Lots of inspiration around the room and am very happy with my finished bowl and jewellery. Felt I’d gained in confidence, sign of a good teacher. Already planning my next course with Melanie. Such a mindful, positive activity. I’ve recommended this to all my friends.
The craft day was very rewarding. Value for money excellent, I was surprised at how much you could do with decorating. A good idea of what you want to do is a must as I got lost in knowing what to do with so much choice. At the end of the day I had up to 5 items finished.
Came to the bowl workshop with my mum, was really well taught and had a really good time. Great selection of materials and well informed! Excited to see our pieces.
Attended the beginners course on Sunday 8 March 2020 and thoroughly enjoyed the day. It was so interesting and therapeutic. Melanie is an excellent teacher and we were made to feel very welcome. Lunch and refreshments were most enjoyable. Overall this was a fabulous day out participating in a craft that was completely new to me. Thanks very much Melanie and may your business go from strength to strength!
Attended this course 8 March with my family and other lovely people. Melanie was great a very welcoming tutor who balanced giving information and support in a way that enabled us to try different ways of trying the materials provided confidently. Good fun and lots of laughter. Lunch was excellent. We are planning another day with Melanie.
I had an amazing time on the course, Melanie is an excellent teacher. The course is fantastic value for money, as you can create a glass bowl and 2 pieces of jewellery. Melanie has a huge range of materials so there's plenty of opportunties to get creative!
This was my second course with Melanie and I absolutely loved it. I've never seen myself as creative, but she explains everything brilliantly and has given me the confidence to try things. I've been really pleased with what I've made. Her own work is inspirational. I'm not sure which of her courses to try next. but will definitely be doing more!
Loved the class. Even better than I expected. Felt like we got a lot done in the 3 hours. Melanie's work is very inspiring too, so the pieces were very imaginative. I want to go again so hope she has room ! Thank you 😀.
Attended this to create a bowl as a present, it turned out better than expected. Course was well run and informative. Am planning on going again this time with my children. Really enjoyable and great value
The course was brilliant and Mel made the course informative and interesting whilst managing to maintain a fun and informal atmosphere.
I will definitely be doing more of her brilliant courses and would recommend them to anyone who has a "creative streak" .
The gift vouchers are an excellent idea and with Christmas coming they are the perfect present.
Thank you Mel for a really enjoyable experience.
I attended the beginners workshop in fused glass last month. Thoroughly enjoyed the whole day, so much that I have signed up for the advanced workshop this month
I attended the beginners fused glass workshop at the Quilt Cabin a couple of weeks ago. It was such a lovely day - very well organised with a lovely group of ladies & Melanie was an excellent teacher. All materials were provided , including a nice lunch & refreshments . I’ve just collected my pieces after they’ve been fired & I'm so pleased with them. An excellent day & really good value. Looking forward to another one next year.
We went along to the workshop and had a fantastic day. Melanie is an excellent teacher who guided us through every project we did. It was a fun and informative experience and we look forward to attending another course.
How fortunate we are that classes like this are offered, with projects easily accomplished by a novice or beginner under the exceptional tutelage of Melanie.
Melanie made this new-to-me art form accessible by sharing her wide variety of supplies and teaching us a number of techniques resulting in four projects. I felt confident knowing she was right beside us guiding us through the selection of colors and materials.
The class was well organized, with supplies neatly laid out, alternating instruction time with project time. She organized a lunch outing at a nearby restaurant, which was included in our class price. And had breakfast pastries and afternoon (lemon - yum!) cake for us.
My only wish is that the venue (quilt shop) had opened for an hour for the class takers to do a little browsing & shopping! But since it was a Sunday, the quilt shop owner certainly deserved a day of rest.
Fused Glass Beginners workshop....What a fabulous fun way to spend a Sunday!
Melanie was an excellent teacher, explained the processes clearly at each stage, guided us and made helpful suggestions for creating gorgeous glass decorative items and jewellery. We learnt glass cutting too - not as scary as it sounds!
The whole experience was delivered in a relaxed, friendly environment, with refreshments and a delicious lunch included too. Great workshop,we made lots of lovely items to take home once they've been fired in the kiln. Can't wait to do another one! Thanks very much Melanie.
Really enjoyed the glass fusing course, and an excellent teacher, had time for everyone. Lovely lunch included too. Would definitely recommend.
Thoroughly enjoyed the day fusing glass, Melanie made the class easy to follow and engaging. Would recommend to anyone.
We had a private beginners workshop for a birthday celebration on glass fusion with Melanie. The whole day was lots of fun, very creative and we all enjoyed it very much. Melanie was so friendly and helpful and gave us lots of ideas for our creations. We had refreshments and a great lunch and I would highly recommend it!
Had a brilliant day, made lots of items, great teacher and nice friendly group, also a very nice lunch. Can't wait to visit again.
I enjoyed the beginner's fused glass workshop at the beginning of March so much that I went to the next level workshop at the end of March. Mel is an excellent teacher and makes the craft accessible to everyone, whatever your artistic talents, or lack of them, may be. Plus lovely lunch and cakes!
Wow what full on fun packed day. Well worth the money. Melanie was so informative and inspiring. The lunch was an added bonus in a local eatery. Delicious.
Me and my sister had a lovely day.
We made lots of lovely glasswork and Melanie is an excellent teacher and very patient. I would do this day again.
Brilliant day. Mel is such a wonderful, inspiring teacher. Had a great time making, creating and experimenting. So many beautiful types of glass and colourful decorations to choose from. Can't wait to see the end results! x
I absolutely loved this workshop. It was such a relaxing and creative atmosphere with Melanie who is an excellent teacher as well as a very lovely person. I would definitely recommend this workshop to anyone who is looking to start learning a new skill or simply want a day of creativity making some lovely glass pieces.
What a fab day! Loved everything about it. The venue, materials, lunch and most of all the brilliant activity! Melanie you make the day special with your organised course and talented teaching, thankyou so much. I would certainly recommend the workshop to anyone who wants a creative day doing something new (or experienced) with guidance (where needed) from Mel.
Attended this workshop yesterday....never done glass fusing before. Had a fabulous time and made some great things. Melanie is the most lovely teacher and very talented.... she was so helpful throughout the whole of the full day workshop to everyone on the course. If your wondering or considering going on this course.. dont ... just book...you won't be disappointed.. great VFM too... you get to make loads of stuff 😁
A really engaging and fun workshop, I loved it!
Melanie is a very patient teacher, and explains all of the aspects and techniques of the course very clearly. There are a lot of different pieces to make, and plenty of time to make them in. There is plenty of scope to put your own creative stamp on all of the pieces, and Melanie is good at helping out with ideas if you're struggling for inspiration.
All in all, a lovely day out, I would definitely recommend it.
My husband and I really had a great day out at this course and made some lovely and useful glass pieces. We have just hung up the stars we made for Christmas and it brought back happy memories. The whole day was excellent and we had lunch and other edible treats during the day. Melanie was so kind and helpful to everyone. This was a great course.
I actually loved this course so much that l went back and did it a second time! We got to make a range of beautiful items including a decoration and some functional pieces - l wear the jewellery all the time and people always ask me where l got it from! I love being able to say i made it myself in a course. Melanie is such a wonderful teacher, full of inspiration, enthusiasm and generally really lovely and welcoming! I also enjoyed having a trip out to a really beautiful part of the world and the food in the middle of the day was a real treat! I will definitely be back for more!
Really enjoyable, different day. We're not particularly art and hasn't done anything remotely like this before, but Melanie was really patient & supportive, and gave us time to try things out. It was amazing seeing the results the following week once they'd been in the kiln. Can't wait for the follow-on workshop in Feb!
Super friendly host and great teacher. Left feeling very inspired to learn more about Glass Fusing. Was very surprised by how much we achieved in a day. Once the firing process was complete I had a coaster, a dish, a star and some beautiful jewellery. And we had time to have a yummy lunch with cake. Great value for money, I highly recommend.
This was a very interesting and informative course, i booked this as a surprise for my Wife as she loves fused glass jewellery, but i think i enjoyed the day more than she did!
Melanie is a great teacher, she took the time to make sure everyone understood the steps to move forward, and gave us creative freedom in our pieces.
course pace and structure was excellent, we never felt rushed and each person on the course went through the multiple stages to create our own masterpieces!
as an extra the lunch provided was delicious.
we are already looking forward to booking the next course.
I can 100% recommend Melanie's fused glass course held at Creative with Nature in Todmorden. As a novice on the subject, I found her tutoring easy to follow and relaxed.
All materials are provided for the pieces you make and with lunch and refreshments thrown in, this is a very reasonably priced, fun day.
The booking process was straight forward and Melanie is a good communicator throughout.
Please go and do the workshop.. You will LOVE it!
Fantastic one day course. Achieved more than ever thought possible!
I love Melanie's courses, she's such a patient teacher and has a great eye for detail, she really brings out the best in her students and I really like how relaxed and taken care of I feel. xx
I had a lovely day creating fused glass star, slump dish, coaster and earrings. Cant believe we achieved so much in one day. Lovely people and excellent instruction from Melanie hope to go to the next level workshop. Cant wait to collect my creations. Thank you all for a great day in the workshop. Julie J
What an absolutely fabulous day. I have never done glass fusing before so was nervous about how I would get on. I needn’t have worried Melanie Louise walked us through each piece. The day was relaxed and fun and we had a lovely lunch. If you are worried about going on your own don’t, I had a wonderful day. To top it off I have some lovely glass. I have already booked my next course.
My daughter and I had a brilliant time on the glass fusing workshop in May. Melanie taught us lots of new skills at a steady pace which resulted in several completed items at the end of the day. It was so well organised that there was even time for a lovely ,relaxed lunch. Would highly recommend this day . We enjoyed it so much we’re hoping to book on the follow up workshop in Oct!
This was a very enjoyable course, which covered a surprising variety of work through the day. Starting off with practising cutting glass, we made a hanging star after adding the colour. We followed this with a coaster, a slump dish and, for me, cufflinks. We also decorated a small box to put smaller items in, as others had done earrings and necklace. Lots of help was given by Melanie, the tutor, who also treated us to cake and coffee. A lovely meal was had at lunch. So much packed into one day. Looking forward to a follow on course.
This was an amazing day. I had never done any glass work before and neither had my husband who I badgered into coming with me. We both had a really brilliant day and can't wait to try out more courses. My husband keeps on talking about it and has been converted to crafts! Melanie was really patient and helpful with lots of advice and encouragement throughout the day. On top of this we enjoyed an excellent lunch with wine and cakes & coffee. Truly fantastic value and a course that I wholeheartedly recommend to all.
I did this course in January, I had never done any glass craft before. Melanie Louise showed us how to cut the glass and how to use the various techniques to decorate our pieces. There were 9 people on the course so Melanie Louise was able to spend lots of time with each of us helping and advising. We made a coaster, drop bowl, star and jewellery. It was exciting waiting to see what our work would look like after the firing so it was good to see our work on the FB as it came out of the kiln and even more exciting when it arrived at my house in the post. I was very pleased with my pieces. It was a very enjoyable day and the lunch in a local restaurant was really good too
This was a perfect way to spend a Saturday in a really creative space, with a fantastic teacher and a lovely group of people. Lunch was included, we made loads of things, brilliant value, definitely do another course with Melanie.
We had a fabulous day with Melanie. She is a very good tutor and we made lots of items on the day. I made a coaster, a dish, a star, a pendant and earings and decorated a small box.
All the materials were included as were drinks, snacks and lunch.
Melanie managed to get round the group and give loads of help and support.
Treat yourself and get booked on the next course.
Thoroughly enjoyable day. Learnt lots of techniques, great range of materials to experiment with, inspiring tuition. Relaxed, supportive environment and lovely lunch. Recommend it. A great treat for yourself or someone else!
A smashing creative day with excellent tutoring from Melanie, a great number of items made on the day and advice given individually too. I will certainly do another craft course with Melanie.
Lovely day, really informative and well paced. Great attention to detail, fabulous food, and so many different materials to experiment with. To come away with so many finished pieces is great. Excellent value too. Highly recommended.
