Illuminated Layers: Painting and Fusing in Stained Glass -Masterclass
Description
An immersive, personal and highly technical class, for experienced glass fusers ready to take their practice further. Over four days, you’ll design and create your own small stained glass panel, combining traditional leadlight craftsmanship with contemporary fused glass techniques. This in-depth masterclass bridges the worlds of heritage and modern glassmaking — expanding your skills, confidence, and creative range. With just two participants per class, you’ll enjoy extensive one-to-one tuition, space for open discussion, and the freedom to explore your own artistic direction. You will: - Develop an original design within classic leadlight parameters. - Learn a selection of making and firing techniques using Bullseye glass powders and frits to create bespoke fused glass sheet. We will cover a variety of powder printing, and mark making techniques using stencils, dilutions, and different application and firing methods. - Learn how to mix, apply, and fire traditional glass enamels to hand-paint imagery for your panel. - Cut, select, and combine complementary glass colours, then assemble, lead, solder, and cement your finished work. - Each stage is fully demonstrated and individually supported, allowing you to work with confidence and precision throughout the process. With only two to a class you will receive a high degree of expert tuition and there will be plenty of time to explore different avenues of discussion regarding techniques that may interest you. Courses are held in my garden studio in Bognor Regis. Located in a beautiful, peaceful and flower filled setting, with resident cats and all the facilities you need, you will be surrounded by inspiration.

“For me, teaching glass is an act of generosity. Each class is a chance to share knowledge, encourage curiosity, and create a space where creativity can flourish. The greatest reward is seeing students surprise themselves—leaving not just with a piece of glass, but with a sense of accomplishment and a spark to continue.” A member of the Contemporary Glass Society CGS and Heritage Crafts Association HCA, Jan brings over 30 years of experience into both heritage stained glass and contemporary fusing and kiln casting techniques. Originally from New Zealand and raised in Hong Kong, her journey with glass began in 1995 during an evening class in Adelaide, Australia. That first experience sparked a lifelong passion, leading her finally to completing a BA (Hons) in Glass and Ceramics at the University for the Creative Arts, Farnham—bringing fresh perspectives to a well-rooted practice and evolving her skills into casting and moldmaking techniques. Jan's commissioned work can be found in both public and private collections and, in recent years, she has been developing her work within ecclesiastical and major architectural settings. Her work brings together heritage stained-glass techniques with contemporary approaches such as lampworking, fusing, and casting. She is currently exploring the integration of three-dimensional casting into stained glass panels—developing a distinct, contemporary voice grounded in the traditions of craft and her work has been gaining recognition for the distinctive casting techniques she is currently developing. Based in Bognor Regis, her purpose-built garden studio is where she works to commission, develops new collections, and welcome sstudents into a quiet, creative space. Jan has been sharing skills in stained and fused glass for over 25 years, both in adult education and through small, hands-on workshops. Many students return year after year—not only to refine their technique but to enjoy the sense of focus and fulfilment that working with glass brings. For Jan, both making and teaching are about offering something lasting—whether it’s a beautifully crafted panel or the gift of new knowledge and confidence in your own creative voice. Whether you’re new to glass or looking to deepen your skills, she looks forward to welcoming you to the studio.

FAQs
Yes, I offer ongoing mentoring classes to those who wish to develop further, whether you are thinking of setting up a studio, or want to learn different processes, these classes are personalised to your own needs and generally are on a one to one basis, although sometimes I may team you up with someone who is at a similar stage or who will work independently alongside you on the day.
I keep my classes small. Fused classes have no more then three people, and stained glass classes only two people, this way I can provide you with all the attention you need during the day to make sure you make something really lovely.
