Stained Glass for Beginners - two day workshop

This two day comprehensive workshop will teach you the ancient art of stained glass. Using traditional methods and materials, Jan will show you how to understand the techniques of design, construction and assembly of a small stained glass window. All materials and safety equipment are provided.

You will use a selection of patterned, coloured and textured glass, to produce a 25 x 30 cm piece of stained glass art. A maximum number of three people to a class ensures you will receive plenty of one to one tuition throughout the day.

During the course, we will work together, using a selection of designs supplied by the studio, through the processes of glass cutting, leading, soldering and cementing techniques.
We will also discuss how to visualize, measure up and draw your own future designs.

My studio is set in a beautiful, purpose built building ,set in lovely surroundings, near the Sussex Coast. We are easily accessible by Train and approximately 7 minutes from the Chichester Bypass Road.

Your tutor, Jan, has worked with both stained and fused glass for more then 25 years. She has recently completed constructing and designing, with the help a small team, a series of large ecclesiastical commissions, including three stained glass windows for St Francis of Assisi's Roman Catholic Church in Ascot, depicting the life of various Catholic Saints. She has been teaching Leaded Light for over 20 years at Adult Education Level in both Sussex and Hampshire, and will offer additional private tuition days and more advanced one on one courses by arrangement.

If you wish to book an alternative date from those published, please do contact me to discuss this. In addition, should you be coming from a distance I can sometimes offer B&B facilities for up to two guests at an additional cost.

Full payment for courses is due on booking. Fees are non refundable within 30 days of your course unless we can fill your place.

Cancellation and a full refund can be obtained up to 4 weeks before the course starts. Start dates may be amended on request.

What's included in the price?

I supply all tools, materials, gloves and safety equipment required and a steady stream of tea, coffee, cake and fruit is on hand throughout the day. Please bring a packed lunch. Fridge storage and a microwave can be provided. In the summer months, lunch can be eaten in the garden and during the winter, I have a dining area inside for you to use. Accommodation can be arranged if required, please ask me for details.

Please wear comfortable clothing with layers and flat, covered, sturdy shoes. Because we are handling lead, this course is not suitable if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. We have adjustable chairs available in the studio but you will likely be spending quite a bit of time on your feet.

I did this course with Jan and came away with a lovely piece and the knowledge to try it all again at home. Totally got the bug, the tuition was clear, class size small and loads of tips and feedback on progress.

Response from Koru Arts:

Thanks Fiona, it was great to see your finished piece after it had been polished. What a beautiful job. Look forward to watching you develop your new found hobby.

I enjoyed the class and learned/achieved what I wanted. I love what I made and also did a recce at Reading Stained Glass a week later. Sadly I also discovered the processes and some of the materials were very harsh on my hands; probably should have worn disposable gloves and/or used barrier cream. I am really looking forward to doing the glass painting course.

Response from Koru Arts:

Thank you for your review Susan and I am sorry your poor hands suffered. We are looking forward to seeing you for the painting course and glad that you had a great day. We will be putting on a few new special courses this summer with some very talented artists that you might enjoy.

What a fantastic 2 days we have had with Jan and Alison. The course was amazing! We learnt how to make a stained glass window, from learning how to use the tools, choosing and cutting our glass, cutting our lead, soldering and onto cementing and polishing. The finished pieces were beautiful we are both vey proud! Thank you to Jan and Alison for your wonderful tuition and patience! Cannot recommend this studio highly enough but beware it's addictive!! Glass fusing next for us!!

Great 2 days making a leaded glass panel under the watchful eye of Jan and Alison our very knowledgeable and skilled tutors
Small groups meant plenty of help and support when needed but encouragement to work independently once feeling more confident
Relaxed atmosphere and everyone felt they had really achieved something by the end of the 2 days
