Fused Glass for Beginners - One day workshop
Description
This one-day, hands-on workshop is a great introduction to the art of glass fusing. You’ll get to know the materials and tools, learn how to cut and handle glass safely, and explore how to layer and assemble your own design ready for kiln firing. Your finished piece—or set of smaller works—will be fused in the kiln after the class. Once fired and finished, your work will be carefully packaged and sent out to you. Held in my private garden studio in Bognor Regis, each workshop is limited to just three participants. This small-group setting allows plenty of time for individual guidance, helping you build confidence with the techniques and enjoy a relaxed, creative atmosphere. All tools and materials are included, with a wide selection of glass to work with. Whether you're dipping your toe into a new hobby or looking for a fresh way to express your creativity, this session offers a thoughtful and inspiring start. Many students return for follow-on studio days and more advanced courses—building their skills in a welcoming, supportive environment surrounded by flowers and creativity. This is a great course with a very experienced tutor. Jan, has worked in Contemporary fused glass for more then 15 years and has been working with traditional stained glass for 25 years. She has mentored and taught a number of new artists their skills over the last 10 years and has recently completed working on a series of ecclesiastical commissions including a large single fused and hand painted panel created for the Holy Cross Hospital in Haslemere, Surrey. She has been teaching Fused glass for over 15 years to Adult Students in the UK and New Zealand, and will offer additional private tuition days and more advanced one on one courses by arrangement. The UK studio is located on the West Sussex Coast, in South Bersted, near Bognor Regis, and only 7 minutes from the main Chichester Bypass. I am easily accessible by car and public transport. The studio is situated in a beautiful garden setting behind my home. Full payment for courses is due on booking. Fees are non refundable within 60 days of your booking unless the place can be filled. You can also transfer your booking onto a friend, should for any reason, you be unable to attend.

Message the tutor“For me, teaching glass is an act of generosity. Each class is a chance to share knowledge, encourage curiosity, and create a space where creativity can flourish. The greatest reward is seeing students surprise themselves—leaving not just with a piece of glass, but with a sense of accomplishment and a spark to continue.” Originally from New Zealand and raised in Hong Kong, my journey with glass began in 1995 during an evening class in Adelaide, Australia. That first experience sparked a lifelong passion, leading me to complete a City & Guilds qualification in the UK, which laid the foundation for a career that continues to evolve. In recent years, I completed a BA (Hons) in Glass and Ceramics at the University for the Creative Arts, Farnham—bringing fresh perspectives to a well-rooted practice. My work brings together heritage stained-glass techniques with contemporary approaches such as lampworking, fusing, and casting. I’m currently exploring the integration of three-dimensional casting into stained glass panels—developing a distinct, contemporary voice grounded in the traditions of craft. Based in Bognor Regis, my purpose-built garden studio is where I work to commission, develop new collections, and welcome students into a quiet, creative space. Alongside my own practice, teaching has been one of the great joys of my career. I’ve been sharing skills in stained and fused glass for over 20 years, both in adult education and through small, hands-on workshops. Many students return year after year—not only to refine their technique but to enjoy the sense of focus and fulfilment that working with glass brings. For me, both making and teaching are about offering something lasting—whether it’s a beautifully crafted panel or the gift of new knowledge and confidence in your own creative voice. Whether you’re new to glass or looking to deepen your skills, I look forward to welcoming you to the studio.

FAQs
Yes, I offer ongoing mentoring classes to those who wish to develop further, whether you are thinking of setting up a studio, or want to learn different processes, these classes are personalised to your own needs and generally are on a one to one basis, although sometimes I may team you up with someone who is at a similar stage or who will work independently alongside you on the day.
On the fusing course, you would expect to make a piece about 20 x 20 cm in size or a number of smaller pieces - I will help and guide you through the process to ensure that you make something lovely. On the stained glass course you will have a choice of two or three designs - this is to ensure that you understand the process before you tackle the issue of designing something of your own.
I keep my classes small. Fused classes have no more then three people, and stained glass classes only two people, this way I can provide you with all the attention you need during the day to make sure you make something really lovely.
