Description

This workshop is at an intermediate level - it is ideal for people who tried glass-fusing before and are looking for something a bit more challenging. It is also suitable for people who've never worked with glass before but are looking to jump in at the deep end! We'll start by considering how different types of glass can react together and drawing up a plan. If necessary, you will be introduced to the processes of cutting and shaping sheet glass. You will also use glass enamels, and stringers (long strands of glass) to create your design. Your pre-cut base of clear glass will already have the beach sand applied and tack-fused for you (working with powdered glass in a group workshop would introduce too many health and safety complications!) Making your project will probably take between 1½ and 2½ hours, depending on how ambitious and dexterous you are. Most people will make somewhere between 2 and 5 beach huts, creating a finished artwork that is somewhere between 10x10cm and 23x10cm. This will vary according to how quickly you work and how intricate your design is - you don't need to decide in advance. Tea, coffee and biscuits will be provided (vegan biscuits and oat milk will be available). After the workshop, your piece of art will be taken back to my studio for firing. Within about a week, it will be ready for collection. If appropriate for your chosen shape, you will also receive an oak stand to display your masterpiece, or it will be returned to the kiln a second time to curve it. I can post your art to you and/or frame it for a small extra fee The typical group size is 4-5. The maximum group size is 8 and the course will only run if there are at least 3 bookings. It’s fine to book a place on this workshop for well-behaved children aged 9+ as long as they are accompanied by a paying adult. This workshop will be held at Broome Village Hall, DY9 0HA. This offers a light and airy space, with plenty of room to spread out if needed. There is wheelchair access and the adjacent car park has plenty of space for the size of group. Broome is a beautiful little village near to the Clent Hills, with lots of countryside walks and pubs if you are planning to include the workshop as part of a full day out. I’m now a full-time glass artist, but previously taught for 20 years in a secondary school, so teaching is a big part of my life. I really enjoy combining the two as I pass on my skills and work with lovely people in a creative environment. In addition to my scheduled workshops, I am always happy to run workshops for a group of friends, starting from as few as three people in your own home or another local venue.

Glass Art Designs is run by me, Beckie Cresswell - I personally teach all of our courses. I have always been interested in nature and the natural environment. After A-levels I studied Biology at university and then went on to be a secondary school Science teacher for 20 years. In my free time I've always enjoyed trying different crafts. When I tried glass fusing, I knew I'd found a craft that I loved. After completing a few more courses, I decided to buy a kiln myself. After lots more learning, experimenting and improving, I set up Glass Art Designs. I've been making and selling glass art ever since then and my work has been shipped all over the world. I'm new to CraftCourses.com but I'm certainly no novice at helping people to learn in a fun environment. I'm delighted to be able to share my passion for teaching with my love of fusing glass!
