About the Course
Create your own sandcast artworks with metal inclusions - 2 Day Workshop run by glass artist Jenny Ayrton.
Day 1 : Jenny Ayrton's studio, 56 Stone Barton Rd, Plympton, Devon, PL7 4LS.
Day 2 : Teign Valley Glass, Pottery Rd, Bovey Tracey, Devon, TQ13 9DS.
Day 1 - I will introduce you to the process, then plan your individual designs and work together to create your wire models.
Day 2 - We will take your models into the hot glass studio, where I will show you the sandcasting process, and then you get to cast three of your very own blocks!
There is a risk that not all pieces will survive the annealing process, however by casting two or three you should have at least one good’un, and if you’re lucky you may even get three (I work at about a 90% success rate, unfortunately this is one of the risks of working with glass)!
The pieces will all go into the lehr to anneal (cool at a controlled rate). I will return to the studio the following week to collect our creations, and grind the bases. I will then post them to you to arrive about a fortnight after the course dates.
Clothing: I would recommend wearing multiple thin layers as hot would be an understatement when casting with molten glass! Please wear sensible shoes (toes covered, no heels). It’s best to keep skin covered, and to avoid wearing anything particularly flammable (so no shorts, mini-skirts, or shell-suits. Tie long hair back and steer clear of the hair spray that day!). I usually wear a long sleeved poly-cotton top and jeans, with a jumper and coat to hand as the snack area at the hot glass studio is outside. The casting sand can stain clothes, so I would recommend wearing older items.
Refreshments: I will arrange for a tasty lunch, plus hot drinks and cake for snack breaks on each day. Please let me know when booking if you have any dietary requirements/dislikes.
Disability/Accessibility: please let me know prior to booking if you have any specific requirements so that I can ensure that the venues are suitably prepared.
Preparation: Your designs can be as unique as you wish, they do not need to create a scene. As with my sandcast work each piece will be composed of detail in the background (drawn/placed onto the sand), and a single-layer wire inclusion between the two layers of glass. If you have particular imagery in mind then please bring photos/doodles/sketches etc to reference. Mobile signal is very patchy in Bovey Tracey, so it’s best to print inspirational images rather than depending on looking online on the day!
If booking with a CraftCourses voucher for part or all of the course fee, please fill in the contact form above or telephone us. Your voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.
What's included in the price?
All materials and tools provided.
I will arrange for tasty lunches, plus hot drinks and homemade cake for snack breaks. Please let me know when booking if you have any dietary requirements/dislikes.
This was one of the best workshops I have been on and it was so lovely to come away with 3 "pieces of art!". The first day was very informal and involved making the small models. We were provided with a lovely lunch and lots of cake. The group was small and intimate. The next day we went to Bovey Tracy and had a wonderful time doing our mould and then having them cast. We were all actively involved in the whole process. WE also had a fab lunch and more cake. All in all a great workshop and worth the expense.

Jenny was amazing to work with and I would highly recommend this.
I started with a glass etching class which was brilliant and progressed onto the 2 day workshop.
With Jenny’s expertise I was able to bring my design to life.
This would make a perfect gift!!
