Course Start Dates

Tutor: Martin McAssey.
Martin is a professionally qualified teacher with many year’s experience of teaching stained glass classes.
Martin runs courses throughout the year; all courses are run with a maximum of twelve students ensuring that each student receives individual attention. Each student has use of a workbench with all the tools and equipment they will need while taking part in the course.
Project one: Tiffany stained glass window hanging
For your first project you will make a Tiffany stained glass window hanging, you will have the choice of a number of different patterns to choose from. Each window hanging measures 17cm x 17cm or 20cm x 12cm approximately.
What will I learn?
You will learn all the basic skills needed to make a Tiffany stained glass window hanging such as:
• Scoring and breaking glass to fit a pattern.
• Selecting suitable glass.
• Grinding glass.
• How to apply copper foil tape to glass.
• Soldering (tacking / tinning and beading).
• Attaching support rings.
• Applying patinas.
• Finishing.
Project two: Traditional stained glass window hanging
For your second project you will make a traditional lead stained glass window hanging, you will again have the choice of a number of different patterns to choose from (see examples above). Each window hanging measures 17cm x 17cm or 20cm x 12cm approximately.
What will I learn?
You will learn all the basic skills needed to make a traditional lead stained glass window hanging such as:
• Scoring and breaking glass to fit a pattern.
• Selecting suitable glass.
• Glass grinding.
• Lead cutting.
• Soldering.
• Attaching support rings.
• Cementing.
• Finishing.
Project Three: Individual Project
Once you have completed your Tiffany and traditional lead window hangings you can then move on to your own individual projects. Martin will work with you to select / plan and source materials for your individual piece, (please note that you will have to purchase the materials for your individual project).
Most projects can be made the only constraint you have is time; it usually takes a student about twelve hours to do the first two projects. This means that each student usually as about twelve hours in class to complete their individual project. Martin will help you plan out your project to ensure that it is finished in the time you have available.

• April – July
• September – December

I attended this course with my 16 year old daughter and we totally enjoyed it.
It had a lovely relaxed atmosphere but we learnt so much and are totally hooked!
I've signed up for another course and have lots of projects I can't wait to get on with, with the reassurance that I have expert help to hand when I get stuck.
All the students on our course ended up making very impressive, professional looking, final pieces.
I can highly recommend it!

I've really enjoyed this term's classes and have re-enrolled for next term. I've done stained glass courses in the past, but Martin has demonstrated better and different techniques from previous teachers, making me feel confident in my ability to produce the things I want to do. The workshop facilities are excellent. Highly recommended.
Sarah Williams - - #26766
Such a lovely start to the week. The class is fun, energising, relaxing and satisfying. Martin gives just the right amount of help and advice and creates a safe atmosphere for each student to explore their own creative style using the carefully taught techniques. I look forward to starting the classes again in the new year and cannot recommend them highly enough.
Lisa Heller - - #26749
This is my third year doing Martin's course. I did a large Tiffany piece earlier in the year and managed to damage about 20 of the glass pieces. So this term I have spent learning restoration skills and have thoroughly enjoyed it. My overall skills with stained glass have improved and I understand a lot more about the process. Both Martin and Kate are excellent teachers and very patient. I can't recommend them highly enough.
Cathy - - #26725
Lovely day at Martin’s fused glass workshop making Christmas decorations. I was given a gift voucher for a big birthday and spent a very productive day with friends. Great workshop, excellent tuition from Martin, coffee and cake, what more could you want. Highly recommend.
Julia Broady - - #26721
Martin’s stained glass course is a lot of fun and ideal for beginners. Martin is the perfect teacher, incredibly patient and attentive without being overbearing. You’re given all the tools and space you need, and encouragement to make use of your own creativity on a final project. Would highly recommend!
Helen - - #26719
Attended the Wednesday morning course consisting of ten weeks. This was my third course with Martin and this time I wanted to push myself with a leaded glass window. Martin is able to get round the small group giving advice and demonstrating techniques to build up you knowledge of stained glass art.
I cannot praise Martin enough for the way he builds up your skill levels through structured projects before assisting you with your first design. If you are interested in giving stained glass a try, contact Martin you will soon be hooked.
Gary Wilson - - #26717
A lovely day out! 6 of us took a bespoke Tiffany course and everyone was pleased with the work they did. I definitely recommend taking these classes, the tutors are excellent.
Sandie - - #24396
I have really enjoyed my first foray into stained glass making. Martin is an excellent teacher and very patient. It is very therapeutic and I will miss the classes over the summer break. I look forward to returning in September .
Lesley Statham - - #23324
I appreciate Martin’s patience and ability to increase one's confidence in developing skills beyond personal expectations. I enjoy the classes and want to learn more.
Izzy Martin - - #23322
Martin runs a great course in various forms of stained glass, very therapeutic, with a chance to make lovely pieces and use the wonderful medium of glass. Count me in again for the next course Martin!! I will be busy over the summer thinking about all the projects in September .
christine walker - - #23320
It would be hard to find fault with Martin, his teaching or the whole workshop set up he has created. It's just great getting to the class each week and leaving all other stuff behind. During the session Martin is always around to offer help and guidance - but also knows when to leave us along to get on with our own projects.
Tom Heller - - #23250
I really look forward to my Wednesday morning class. It is something completely different to anything I’ve done previously. I have found some parts a little challenging but Martin has been a brilliant tutor with so many helpful tips and ideas and so very much patience! He is very approachable even when I keep needing a reminder of how to do certain things for the hundredth time !
The workshop is well equipped with everything you could possibly need. It’s a really friendly and relaxed atmosphere with all levels of ability. Martin and the other students are so encouraging and never judgemental. We have a real good laugh too.
The classes are very well organised and run well which creates a very relaxing and enjoyable atmosphere.
I would highly recommend Martin’s classes.
Heather D’Apice - - #22992
All of Martin's glass courses are excellent. Stained glass, glass fusing and fired glass painting.
Friendly atmosphere in very well equipped workshop, with excellent tuition.
Meem - - #22973
Great working area with individual benches and all equipment supplied plus expert ands hands on instruction and guidance from Martin. It’s been a tremendous experience and highly recommended for all ages. Thanks you.
Dick Dove - - #21119
I have just started doing stained glass for the first time this term and have really enjoyed these classes. The first two projects were carefully thought out to include many of the skills required to work with glass.
Now I hopefully have acquired these techniques I will be able to become a bit adventurous in what I make.
Lydia Keigwin - - #20989
Still loving Martin's class. He is always encouraging and nothing seems too much trouble, nothing fazes him and he appreciates each person's work and helps us all make the most of our time at the class.
I really look forward to Monday mornings!
Lisa Heller - - #20953
Very enjoyable. Martin is a great tutor, helpful and patient
Catherine Sikakana - - #18751
I originally signed up to one of Martin's 12 week courses to see my friends more. To be honest, I hadn't given much thought to stained glass and didn't have a project in mind. Martin is a great teacher. He guided me through the various techniques with patience and care. He helped me design a project which was both feasible in the 12 weeks and challenging enough to keep me engaged. I'm very happy with the end result and display it proudly in my kitchen. I found his weekly class to be therapeutic and cathartic - a real escape from the daily stresses in life. There is a lovely atmosphere in the classes and everyone is very friendly. Martin even serves up drinks half way through each class - a really nice touch! The only criticism is that I'm left wanting more and I'm currently trying to think of a new project so I can begin more classes!
Thank you Martin!
Lucy - - #18716
I really enjoy coming to the course. Martin is a very good teacher and is always really helpful with whatever projects we are working on.
Sue Owen - - #18666
It was great to learn new skills and the atmosphere of classes was friendly and warm. I am happy that i can now go on and make pieces of my own having had excellent instruction from the tutor Martin.
Jean Tracey - - #18627
The course has given me confidence around glass - cutting shaping foiling leading and assembling various designs. I have been instructed in the use of the specialised glass cutting bandsaw. Creative ideas are gained from observing work of other students as well as from Martin.
The class has a light hearted jovial atmosphere and is fun to attend.
Martin is always friendly and helpful and not only a good tutor but also happy to arrange alternative replacement sessions if for any reason it is not possible to attend all those that had been ‘booked’
Highly recommended, I look forward to continuing the course next year.
Alan Caunt - - #18614
I highly recommend that you choose Martin to teach you as he is very experienced at his craft and will guide you through every detail of the piece of art you choose to make with his expert knowledge, diligence and patience and with a great deal of compassion.
Best wishes, Jenny H
Jenny - - #18612
I have just finished a twelve week stained glass course. As a complete beginner I found Martin to be very helpful and encouraging. I really enjoyed the whole experience and definitely recommend the course.
Jackie Bowie - - #18604
Class environment is relaxing and allows you to develop your skills without judgement. Some of the creative work being produced is astounding.
Izzy Martin - - #18602
As a beginner I found the course excellent with Martin taking us 3 beginners through the basic techniques via 2 projects. After these Martin guided us through our own projects.
The class had a mixture of levels of skill which was good as I could chat to more advanced classmates about their projects.
Martin was very good at sharing his time with everybody, plus he makes a good cup of tea! His classes are relaxed and friendly making learning easy
Geoff Andrew - - #18599
I have been wanting to take up a craft as a hobby for sometime but struggled to find something that appealed as most craft courses seem to be based around sewing. My search is over! I have just finished my first course and have loved every minute of the Friday morning stained glass course. I'm really pleased with my first two 'practice' pieces and have nearly finished my own third piece. Kate has been a great teacher; she is very knowledgeable and patient. She explains and demonstrates every stage of the process and and never seems to mind my asking her to show me how to do something again for the umpteenth time! Now I just need to think of my next project ready to start the next course in January....
Jacqueline Walker - - #18455
I came across Martin’s workshop whilst visiting an open day at the Hamlet. I had never thought of doing stained glasswork before but immediately thought of a window for which we needed a stained glass panel and decided to make my own. I was inspired by the work which students were undertaking, the workshop and the atmosphere. Having completed 3 terms the window is now done and even my husband was impressed! Martin is very encouraging and inspires confidence in moments of doubt. There doesn’t seem to be any problem he doesn’t have a solution for and will ensure every piece is a success. I am in awe of the work students undertake under Martin’s guidance and have now signed up for a 4th term.
Julia Greenwood - - #18448
This course is exceptional. I have been working with Martin for about 18 months and it is my "happy place" among the stresses and strains of life. Martin is very patient, respectful and inclusive. He creates a relaxed environment and is encouraging so that I feel I am learning all the time and proud of my achievements. I would recommend this class to people of all abilities - I am definitely at the learner end but still able to create some beautiful work.
Cathy Phillips - - #18255
Just completed my first 'term' of lessons and I am hooked ! Kate is an excellent instructor and the facilities are very good. Signed up for next term and constantly thinking of the next project !
Steve Ibbotson - - #18193
Martin's class is well organised, with help, advice and input whenever required.
It's a pleasure to be in his class, I can't imagine anyone not enjoying it and learning the stained glass techniques he teaches. His studio is fully equipped and a delight to be in.
Meem Bernau - - #18181
I have thoroughly enjoyed my recent “stained glass” course and booked for the next one. Martin is knowledgeable and friendly making learning easy, his studio is large and well equipped.
I would highly recommend him to anyone interested in learning stained glass techniques.
Alan Vickers - - #18166
I really enjoy the class. Martin is an excellent teacher, giving clear instruction, guidance and help and enabling students to work at their own pace with friendly support and encouragement. There is always a positive and friendly atmosphere, and Martin is always happy to provide extra help when needed. I look forward to starting the classes again in the New Year.
Lisa Heller - - #18160
I have loved this class. Martin is an excellent teacher who is supportive and encouraging. The atmosphere is calm and relaxing and the class offers a great break from a busy life each week. I really look forward to attending each week.
Kate Marshall - - #18144
I'm in my third year of going to stained glass classes taught by Martin. I was a total novice and the first term introduces you to all the techniques needed to make both Tiffany and Leaded pieces. I enjoyed it so much I kept on going. Being able to spend a couple of hours a week focusing on making stained glass in a friendly atmosphere is great. Martin is on hand to advise, answer questions and help out when needed. Am looking forward to continuing in 2019!
Naomi - - #18124
I’ve been attending Martin’s classes for a few year. He is an excellent teacher. The classes are friendly and relaxed. I can’t recommend them highly enough.
Cath Williamson - - #18118
We have attended 3 ten week courses with Martin and both my husband and I can certainly recommend his classes to anyone who wants to learn a new hobby. We are going to attend his fusion glass courses too as we just love working with glass and the way Martin teaches. Xx
Mrs Jane Walsh - - #18116
The stain glass courses are well run. Martin leads each student step by step through the stain glass process methodically making it seem (relatively) straight forward. He is amazingly patient and happy to repeat information as required. Each class contains a variety of "students" with different skill levels and experience that are working on different projects. Martin treats you as an individual and provides you with the level of support that you require. The studio is well stocked with all necessary equipment that is well maintained. Students just need to purchase their glass for their personal projects. I would highly recommend these courses.
Sue Matthews - - #16281
Excellent course with good support and guidance from Martin who is a great teacher. He is always happy to help with your ideas and share his knowledge/tips . Very enjoyable and returning for a third course.
Donna Martin - - #16083
I have really enjoyed learning a new skill, meeting other people doing the same and creating pieces. Martin is an excellent teacher who is always very encouraging! I am looking forward to improving my techniques over the coming year.
Corinne Thornton - - #15994
Love what we do, Martin is patient and helpful and I enjoy the other participants and everyone's willingness to share ideas
Vicky Thomas - - #15968
I have attended at least four of Martin’s courses, I think!! I’m not certain how many because it feels like a normal part of my week! I enjoy ‘crafty’ things anyway but had never tried stained glass before. The first few weeks were challenging and I can’t say some of my skills are much better now, but that is not to do with Martin’s skill as a teacher. As a teacher myself, for 40 years I can spot a ‘good un’ a mile off and Martin is one of these. He immediately puts you at ease, quietly and with humour leads you through the process of producing something magical. He never gets frustrated, however many times you need reminding about techniques, he’s supportive when you want to try something left of field and helps you achieve the ‘picture in your head’. He’s helped me produce pieces I never ever thought I’d be able to make and even improve my soldering - not an easy task. There is always a happy atmosphere in his well equipped workshop, with everyone interested in each other’s projects, I’ve signed up for another course in September - can’t wait!!
Gail - - #15958
As a 'newbie' to Stained Glass, I began working with Martin just 6 months ago, however I have been delighted with Martin's teaching, encouragement and support throughout....... and am now most definitely hooked on Leaded Glass and Tiffany Glass art.
I thoroughly recommend Martin as a tutor and his well equipped workshop at Abbeydale. When you start you will be challenged by this addictive medium, but Martins teaching and enthusiasm will soon get you over any frustrations and very quickly you will have made brilliant pieces of glass art with a fantastic feeling of achievement.
Everybody who attends the workshops is really friendly and happy to share, and its great being surrounded by amazing ideas. Looking forward to returning in September!
Debbie Twell - - #15854
I cannot rate this course highly enough. Martin is an excellent and patient teacher, allowing each class member to work at their own pace. He is always encouraging and happily shares of his many years of experience in this craft, allowing us to learn from what has gone well for him.
The facilities at the workshop are also excellent. There is never any waiting around for equipment to become free, every class member has exactly the tools needed. He is always very aware of our safety and teaches us best practice with regards to health and safety. It is also very helpful to be able to purchase some items from Martin which he supplies at very competitive prices.
I have met some lovely people on Martin's course and look forward to returning.
Alyson Ward - - #15829
This is an excellent course! As a beginner, Martin will show you both the traditional way of making leaded stained glass and also the Tiffany method, you will then have a chance to produce a piece of your choice using either of these new skills.
Martin is a patient, well organised teacher with a wealth of knowledge and ideas and the classroom is well set out with all the equipment easy to find.
I thoroughly recommend this course.
Deborah Williams - - #15828
It's been fabulous to explore my creative side and I've learnt so much. Martin has been very encouraging and supportive, pointing in the right direction when I needed it too. The others in the class have been inspiring with their wonderful creativity. Highly recommend these classes.
Amal - - #15824
I have been attending Martin's class for a few years now as I love the relaxed creative environment. Martin is always supportive and gives great advice on ideas for the projects that I have carried out. I also love being able to see everyone else's projects and share ideas/get inspiration from them. The time spent in the class flies every week, and is very enjoyable - a great way to forget all of life's stresses.
Barbara Ruth Doyle - - #15715
A great course for beginners, or even as refresher course. Something new learned every week. Individual equipment which is good, lots of help from Martin who is an excellent teacher. A very motivational course. Definitely returning with a new project.
Pauline Oldfield - - #15682
Classes are fantastic. Martin is a great teacher with a lot of patience and gentleness. I feel a real sense of achievement and he has helped me find skills within me that i didn't know existed. Looking forward to September already.
Cathy Phillips - - #15678
What a delight to get along to glass class each week. Martin is an excellent teacher who gives each of us the individual attention we require - from first timers to ambitious glass artists we each get just the right amount of support and encouragement. And at half way through each class he brings us a cup of tea - what's not to like?
Tom - - #15674
Martin's class has been one of the most enjoyable and rewarding classes I have ever attended. Martin's teaching style is perfect fro a group of adult learners with a varying amount of knowledge and expertise, from those who have been working with glass for years to those who are complete newcomers. He gently facilitates learning whilst at the same time teaching the various aspects of the craft and keeping a safe environment. Martin is careful to teach thoroughly the best techniques - which he has acquired over decades of working with glass, but at the same time allows students to follow their own style of work. From "Well done you're finished, are you pleased with it?" to "Hold it up, and I'll take a picture", those of us who have experienced that feel the same kind of delight that Bake-off contestants experienced when Paul Hollywood shook their hand.
Lisa Heller - - #15672
The course is very well run and inspirational. It offers a good introduction to stained glass techniques for beginners in the class and encouragement for more experienced students to develop their preferred projects. The atmosphere is friendly and non judgmental which makes for enthusiastic and supportive classes. There are a large selection of books and the website gallery of students work provides plenty of ideas.
Kay - - #15640
I’ve done fused glass workshops as well as the stained glass course and absolutely love it! As a beginner it’s taken me a while to get the techniques right and thanks to Martins incredible patience and encouragement I am continuing to create lovely glass pieces I am very proud of. I highly recommend Martin McAssey Glass.
Late Singleton - - #15621
Martin is a brilliant teacher, calm, unflustered, clear when explaining different processes, patient, and always positive and affirming. The purpose built studio is equipped with everything needed by each student without having to share. This is a fantastic course.
Meem Bernau - - #15619
I have signed up for my third course with Martin starting in September. He has created a lovely relaxed place in which to study this craft. Always welcoming, friendly and patient, Martin encourages you, supports you and nothing is too much trouble for him. “Don’t worry, it’ll be alright, I can sort that for you” are words that spring readily from his lips, if things aren’t going as they should. I thoroughly enjoy the sessions.
Barbara Norton - - #15618
martin is such a nice man and a really good teacher he is fair in that if you miss a class he really does his best to fit you in some where I love the classes and I so enjoy what I produce.
Marion Thorpe - - #14262
Love these weekly classes, very friendly, easy going and learning to do something a little out of the ordinary. Martin is helpful and knowledgeable and goes out of his way to make sure you don’t miss out on classes if there’s a week you can’t get to. He’s also very positive and works hard to help you produce some stunning work, however unusual the idea he’s presented with.
Highly recommended.

Sheila Hands - - #13512
I have been coming for several years and find the classes relaxing and reviving. It's great to be learning a new skill.
Martin is an excellent tutor, always positive and encouraging
He creates and very warm and friendly atmosphere in the classes. The workshop is well equipped, heated on winter nights and he replaces worn equipment regularly. There is enough space, even with bigger projects, and a regular cuppa, which is always welcome!
I really enjoy seeing other people's ideas and beautiful creations and everyone shares so readily. It's inspiring.
I would thoroughly recommend his courses.
dee walker - - #13481

I was very unconfident at the start , however the course is well structured and Martin provides clear guidance and advice and encouragement. I really enjoy attending the classes, I have become more independent and confident in stained glasswork and pleased with the things I have made. Highly recommended.
Ellen Bartley - - #13390
My husband and I were looking for something that we could do together and he found Martin. Without question we enjoy every week that we go and have already booked into our second session of classes. We have learnt so much thru martins extensive knowledge and nothing is too much trouble no matter how many times we ask. I would recommend this course to anyone looking to do something different as a hobby and interest.
