Based in Herston, a hamlet sitting in a sheltered spot alongside Widewall Bay in South Ronaldsay, one of the beautiful islands that make up the county of Orkney. I have been making stained glass panels inspired by the Orkney scenery, nature and culture for the past 12 years and would like to share my passion with both locals and visitors to Orkney.
Join me for a fun filled intensive one day course to learn the skills and use glass, lead and tools to make your own stained glass panel. The course is suitable for ages 15 and over, and will suit all artistic abilities. You will have a creative and fun time ending with a great sense of satisfaction as you show off your work, ever afterwards!
I will demonstrate the techniques and work with you to choose a design for your panel, show you how to cut the glass and lead, pin out the design for soldering, then grout and polish. You will have a wonderful memento from your day, together with notes and tips for continuing your new skills at home.
The course is available all year round and is designed on a one to one basis, but if you would like to come along with a friend/partner the workshop can comfortably accommodate 2 students. There is a 25% discount on the course price for two attendees (£90.00 pp).
If you will be redeeming a CraftCourses gift voucher on this course, the voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.
All materials, safety equipment etc, and refreshments provided. Just bring a packed lunch, comfortable clothing and shoes, (no open toed sandals!). If the weather is good we can eat lunch outside and watch out for seals.

My aunt and I attended the one-day course, and what a fantastic day it was too! All materials were supplied along with easy to understand instructions packs. We started off by designing our panels, choosing our glass and then started the process under the supervision and great instruction of Angela. We learnt everything from start to finish. We are both absolute beginners who found the course really enjoyable, and ended up with some beautiful panels to take home with us. Oh, and the cakes were delicious too! 😉 We'll definitely be back for the two-day course next time 👍
Response from Herston Stained Glass:Thanks for your lovely review. You both were great students, and were quick to learn all the techniques involved. The resulting panels were beautiful and I hope you are very proud of them. I look forward to working with you again.😊
I had a great day learning how to create a stained glass panel. Angela was very skilled and patient, guiding me through all the steps and giving her expert advice where needed.
She was super friendly and I felt very relaxed throughout the full day course.
I came away with a glass panel that I will treasure.
Angela's studio is an inspiration with lovely examples of her glass work and the view from the window of the bay is idyllic.
Response from Herston Stained Glass:Thanks Caron for your very positive review. It was a fun way to spend a very stormy day. You were a good student and your panel was beautiful. I hope you can make use of your new skills and maybe continue to make stained glass.
This was a brilliant introduction to stained glass making! I really enjoyed learning all the traditional methods. The process is much more complicated than I thought but Angela is a great teacher with lots of knowledge to share. I absolutely love my finished panel!
Response from Herston Stained Glass:Thanks for your great review, you have a natural artistic talent and your panel was fabulous, it was lovely meeting and working with you. Thanks.
I cannot recommend learning to make stained glass with Angela of Herston stained glass strongly enough! I was very anxious about working with glass and the thought of actually making a piece of glass art in one day seemed to me... a complete novice... well to say the least daunting!
But with Angela's calm clear and relaxed instructional style and with her depth of experience she guided me through the day to complete a piece of stained glass work that was very satisfying to me and even recognisable to others ...a miracle !
Coupled with the beautiful maritime landscape where she is lucky to live and the very creative atmosphere it was all in all a fantastic and much recommended experience.
Response from Herston Stained Glass:Thank you for your very positive review. I enjoyed our day together and you made a great stained glass panel. I hope I can encourage you to make some more!
A really interesting, hands on course. Angela is a very patient tutor. She explains and shows you the processes very clearly and she makes the whole day fun. So rewarding to be able to go home with something that you have made from the very start. By the end of the course I felt I had learnt so many new skills. A wonderful venue too - in an idyllic spot with the sea just outside the windows. I would definitely recommend it!
Response from Herston Stained Glass:Thanks for the really positive review. It was a pleasure working with you and I hope you can use your new-found skills.
