About the Course

Based in Herston, a hamlet sitting in a sheltered spot alongside Widewall Bay in South Ronaldsay, one of the beautiful islands that make up the county of Orkney. I have been making stained glass panels inspired by the Orkney scenery, nature and culture for the past 12 years and would like to share my passion with both locals and visitors to Orkney.

Join me for a fun filled intensive one day course to learn the skills and use glass, lead and tools to make your own stained glass panel. The course is suitable for ages 15 and over, and will suit all artistic abilities. You will have a creative and fun time ending with a great sense of satisfaction as you show off your work, ever afterwards!

I will demonstrate the techniques and work with you to choose a design for your panel, show you how to cut the glass and lead, pin out the design for soldering, then grout and polish. You will have a wonderful memento from your day, together with notes and tips for continuing your new skills at home.

The course is available all year round and is designed on a one to one basis, but if you would like to come along with a friend/partner the workshop can comfortably accommodate 2 students. There is a 25% discount on the course price for two attendees (£90.00 pp).

If booking with a CraftCourses voucher for part or all of the course fee, please fill in the contact form above. Your voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.

What's included in the price?

All materials, safety equipment etc, and refreshments provided. Just bring a packed lunch, comfortable clothing and shoes, (no open toed sandals!). If the weather is good we can eat lunch outside and watch out for seals.

Parking space available. Pickup from public transport can be arranged.

This was a brilliant introduction to stained glass making! I really enjoyed learning all the traditional methods. The process is much more complicated than I thought but Angela is a great teacher with lots of knowledge to share. I absolutely love my finished panel!

Response from Herston Stained Glass:

Thanks for your great review, you have a natural artistic talent and your panel was fabulous, it was lovely meeting and working with you. Thanks.

I cannot recommend learning to make stained glass with Angela of Herston stained glass strongly enough! I was very anxious about working with glass and the thought of actually making a piece of glass art in one day seemed to me... a complete novice... well to say the least daunting!
But with Angela's calm clear and relaxed instructional style and with her depth of experience she guided me through the day to complete a piece of stained glass work that was very satisfying to me and even recognisable to others ...a miracle !
Coupled with the beautiful maritime landscape where she is lucky to live and the very creative atmosphere it was all in all a fantastic and much recommended experience.

Response from Herston Stained Glass:

Thank you for your very positive review. I enjoyed our day together and you made a great stained glass panel. I hope I can encourage you to make some more!

A really interesting, hands on course. Angela is a very patient tutor. She explains and shows you the processes very clearly and she makes the whole day fun. So rewarding to be able to go home with something that you have made from the very start. By the end of the course I felt I had learnt so many new skills. A wonderful venue too - in an idyllic spot with the sea just outside the windows. I would definitely recommend it!
