Beginners' stained-glass course, 2 days

X

Description

This two-day introduction to the traditional method of stained-glass construction will give you an insight into this ancient craft. You will be fully guided through the process and given lots of tips, tricks and insight and appreciation of stained-glass window making. Stained glass has been used for thousands of years, beginning with the Ancient Romans and Egyptians, who produced small objects made from coloured glass. The course will start with an introduction to the art of stained glass, the design and how we ‘paint with light’ and the equipment and tools used to do this. We will quickly move on to the practical aspect by demonstrating how we score and break glass. This will be followed by practise cutting glass to a design until you're ready to start cutting the coloured glass for your main project. You can either use one of the designs provided or bring along a design of your own (only recommended if you have prior experience). There will be a full demonstration the process of constructing a panel using the leading method at each stage and we will discuss the tools and techniques being used. Work will be focussed on building and finishing your stained-glass panel by leading, soldering and cementing your design piece which you'll finish in time to take home. Your tutor for the day is Jo Turner who has many years of experience making and teaching. (Jo also offers half-day glass suncatcher copper foiling workshops on various dates during the year at Stanwick Lakes.) This class is suitable for complete beginners and is limited to five participants. The course will take place in our training barn at Stanwick Lakes, a beautiful 750-acre nature reserve and visitor attraction in the heart of Northamptonshire’s Nene Valley. www.stanwicklakes.org.uk
