Beginners' Stained-Glass Course, 2 days
A two day introduction to the traditional method of stained glass making in the heritage barn at Stanwick Lakes in the beautiful nature area of the Nene Valley, Northamptonshire. This course in traditional method of stained-glass construction will give you an insight into this ancient craft. You will be fully guided through the process and given lots of tips, tricks, insight and appreciation of stained-glass window making. The course will start with an introduction to the art of stained glass, the design and how we ‘paint with light’ and the equipment and tools used to do this. We will quickly move on to the practical aspect by demonstrating how we score and break glass. This will be followed by practise cutting glass to a design until you're ready to start cutting the coloured glass for your main project. You can either use one of the designs provided or bring along a design of your own. There will be a full demonstration the process of constructing a panel and at each stage and we will discuss the tools and techniques being used. Work will be focussed on building and finishing your stained-glass panel by leading, soldering and cementing your design piece which you'll finish in time to take home. Your tutor for the day is Jo Turner, a heritage stained glass maker, who has many years of experience making and teaching within the adult community learning environment. (Jo also offers a two day Medieval glass painting workshop and half-day glass suncatcher copper foiling workshops on various dates during the year at Stanwick Lakes). Some feedback of the course and the tutor includes; "The course was really interesting with a brief history of stained glass and then the practical. All resources were provided and the tutor was knowledgeable, approachable and friendly. I'd happily do it again, it was thoroughly enjoyable." "I absolutely loved this course! Jo is an amazing tutor who is able to translate her extensive experience into practical guidance for her students. It’s harder than it looks and Jo was always on hand to lend input or a timely suggestion. Fellow attendees were a joy to share this experience with. I highly recommend this course. Jo has inspired me to further my glasswork skill set and I’m so grateful to have spent this time under her tutelage." This class is suitable for complete beginners and is limited to five participants. The course will take place in our training barn at Stanwick Lakes, a beautiful 750-acre nature reserve and visitor attraction in the heart of Northamptonshire’s Nene Valley.
