Description

Raku Pottery - Alternative techniques Experience the thrill of Raku pottery in a fresh and experimental way with ceramic artist Andy Mason. This hands-on workshop explores alternative Raku firing methods that produce striking and unpredictable surface effects. You’ll work with a range of techniques — including horsehair, copper wire, and obvara (also known as Baltic Raku) — to create pots that are distinctive, expressive, and truly one-of-a-kind. Like traditional Raku, the process is full of energy and surprise, but here the focus is on texture, pattern and creative experimentation. Andy will guide you step by step through each technique, sharing his extensive knowledge and passion for this exciting art form. This workshop is ideal for: Anyone — from complete beginners to experienced makers — who wants to explore a different side of Raku. Whether it’s your first time or you’ve already tried traditional Raku, this workshop offers a chance to play, experiment and discover the unexpected beauty of these alternative firing techniques. The course takes place in and around the purpose-built oak-framed craft barn at Stanwick Lakes, managed by Rockingham Forest Trust as an environmental charity. This protected Nature Reserve and Wetland of International Importance spans 750 acres of open space — the perfect inspiration for creativity. During your lunch break, you can enjoy the on-site cafés, visit the heritage museum, or relax by the lakeside and watch the wildlife.
