A wonderful Christmas present! The day could not have been better: Matt is a great teacher who managed to facilitate a diverse range of designs and abilities. The workshop is fantastic with plenty of workspace and equipment and was very easy to find. I suspect that everyone went home happy with something to really treasure. The biscuits were good too - thanks!
What a truly magical, inspiring and exciting day! The whole set up of the studio coupled with the skill, clarity of explanations and friendly tuition given by Matt enabled 3 generations to learn and it will be a day that we will remember forever. Thank you so much for such an amazing experience as well as for us being able to take home a unique piece of art that we all worked together on. We can’t wait to come back to create something else and to learn more. Thank you so much!
I was delighted that for Christmas 2018 I received a Craft voucher. I had wanted to make a stained glass feature of my bathroom door since moving into our Victorian house 2 years ago. I was drawn to Matt's workshop as he is keen to work with you on your chosen project and he doesn't have a generic set approach to a predetermined piece. At my first workshop in February I just wanted to put all my ideas into one A4 sized piece. Matt has great ideas for colour and light which were entirely in keeping with my project. I was amazed at the really beautiful outcome. So with a birthday in April you can guess what was on the top of my list. I couldn't get down to Devon until a few weeks ago but with several emails between myself and Matt discussing ideas, planning and solution's I came to my second workshop. On the day itself Matt had made the effort to source the glass I needed and under his skilled guidance I was able to produce a really stunning piece which I am very proud of. I am showing pictures to everyone I meet and am well and truly hooked on this amazing Art Form. I'm already planning the next two panels. Thanks again Matt for making my day and providing such a friendly and informative workshop.
What a great day! As a first-timer, I learned lots, had loads of time to practice and the end-result was very satisfying! Matt is encouraging, knowledgeable and helpful, keen to help you make the most of your day in a well equipped and relaxed environment. I left having achieved and learned far more than I expected to and would thoroughly recommend Matt's course.
I attended Matt's 1 day course in stained glass; the venue was great, relaxed, lots of working space, all the equipment you needed. Matt was great, informative, helped you with ideas, he was supportive and enthusiastic about everyone’s work! Everyone left happy! Great day! Would definitely recommend Matt's workshop!
Having wanted to try stained glass for a very long time I went to the September one day course. Had an over ambitious project for the day but Matt was very patient and an excellent instructor which allowed me to complete my first piece on the day. The class was fun and relaxed and I met lots of other creative people with varying degrees of skills. Happily I wasn't the only beginner so didn't feel out of my depth. Happy to recommend this workshop to anyone and hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
I attended Matt’s stained glass workshop in July. I had a wonderful time learning how to make stained glass work, which was my dream that became a reality. It was also a great experience to learn new skills, whilst meeting awesome people. Matt is an amazing tutor who has a passion for his job. He is very patient and approachable and could easily teach me how to make unique art works out of pieces of glass in just one session. He also supported us throughout the day and taught us all the required and necessary techniques. I would highly recommend this course if you want to become a master in this area.
I've wanted to try stained glass work for years and was fortunate to find Matt's course.
I had quite an ambitious window idea and as a beginner I wasn't sure if I'd achieve it but with Matt's help and relaxed and patient approach I discovered it was indeed achievable.
I would definitely recommend this course to anyone. Matt is inspiring and totally supportive of his students.
I really enjoyed Matt's stained glass workshop. Being very patient, he's a natural teacher, giving just the right amount of information at a digestible pace. With hindsight my design was incredibly ambitious for a beginner, however he helped me realise it, whilst also attending to 6 other beginners all with designs that required different methods and techniques. Everybody left with a unique and beautiful piece. Well done Matt, for making this possible!
A comprehensive introduction to making stained glass. Matt is adaptable and approachable...no question is too silly and he will work with the designs you may already have or help you to develop something lovely on the day. Matt was willing to let the workshop over-run as his priority was making sure that everyone had completed a piece they were happy with. I would definitely recommend this one day course.
I'm renovating a Victorian house and have a glass panelled vestibule door frame and door with glass that was replaced in the 60's with single pane slabs of opaque glass that looks flat and uninspiring. It's 18 panels in total and I can't afford to pay for the panels to be professionally made so I decided to take a punt at having a go myself. Having never done anything like this before looked for a course online and found this which was reasonably local to me. The workshop is bright, spacious and in a lovely countryside location.
I took a basic line drawing design with me for one of the mid-sized panels and Matt talked me through the options and design possibilities.
I enjoyed Matt's tuition style, explaining the core principles at the start then leaving you to have a go and working with you through your mistakes and the relevant processes for your idea during the day. I was really delighted to have completed my first panel by the end of the day. People I've showed it to are really impressed too!
I'm ready to have a go myself now, although I'll likely book another session for help with some of the bigger, more complex panels.
It was a great day and I've learned the foundation of a craft that I'll probably use for years to come.
I would really recommend this course to anyone considering trying this craft for the first time. Matt is really encouraging and any doodles you take along to try and express your idea, he will help you realise it. The workshop itself is a really brilliant environment to create in, loads of natural light and space so you don’t feel you are on top on one another, you can get on and spread out if you need to but equally have a chat and a cuppa as you go. I am a complete novice, but I will be returning as I had an ace day. 👍
It was very enjoyable because, as a complete beginner, I found cutting glass hard but with help and encouragement I am very pleased with what I achieved. We all produced very different pieces and learnt to use most techniques. I would recommend Matthew Le Bretton.
Agree with the reviews below about the ambience and support. In comparison with many courses advertised, a big difference is that Matt encourages you to bring your own design and then he will help you realise it, making constructive suggestions for modifications if some elements won't work in glass otherwise. A wide range of different projects and three different techniques being learned on the course I attended, which is a tribute to his flexibility! Very enjoyable and highly recommended.
Very well set out workshop .plenty of space to work. Matt is a very good teacher ,comes across clear and easy to understand ,more than willing to help those who are struggling with bits and bobs . Not a clock watcher we ran over time but he was more than happy to make sure you go home with some work to show off to family etc .
I will be back for more .10/10 plus
What a wonderful day. Great teaching and guidance throughout. Friendly and calm atmosphere with everything you need provided. I was so pleased to have done this course as its been something ive wanted to try for years. I would love to come back and do some more. My finished piece is sat looking beautiful on my kitchen window cill where it catches the light. Thankyou.
I went to a day course with Matt, entertaining serious doubts that I would be able to realise a mock-up I had done previously. But when Matt saw it, he immediately went into overdrive and produced a number of possible ways to achieve it. His set-up at the DAAW near Silverton runs like clockwork and he oversees the projects that people bring, with a calm enthusiasm and care. He made sure that everyone (around 9)
had all the attention they needed, whatever their level of experience. I couldn't have been more impressed, and found myself wishing I had had that quality of guidance when I was a student. I have to say, I'm a fan.
John Harris, professional artist.
A really good course. Matt is an excellent tutor with an obvious passion for what he does, coupled with the teaching skills to help everyone get the most out of the day. I was amazed at what he helped me achieve and it has reignited my enthusiasm for glass work after a gap of many years. I am going back for more!
An excellent course - great tuition, tips, tools, materials and support while we learnt all the techniques we needed to get our stained glass moved from novice to informed aspirant. We are now starting to do our own work and will be back to Matt for further courses.
Had a great day yesterday with Matt Le Breton at his dedicated workshop near Silverton. This is my second visit to Matt's workshop for leaded glass and it didn't disappoint. Matt is an excellent teacher who advises and guides you to develop your own project. Just enough help which allows you to make progress If you are passionate about glass and want to know more, learn new techniques in a motivating environment then I highly recommend this course and this fantastic teacher!
Who knew you could learn so much in one day? Brilliant day, Both Matt and his lovely assistant Nina could not have been more helpful and supportive. Matt even found time in a very busy day to demonstrate glass painting. Will definitely be going again. Thanks Matt for an interesting and informative course.
I attended a one day stained glass course on Sunday and loved every minute, the day flew by in a flash. Matt is a fantastic teacher and offers just the right amount of assistance, whilst also leaving you to work on your own so you feel like the finished piece is your own work. He's incredibly skillful and it was a pleaseure to spend the day working with him and the others on the course. I'll definitely be returning to do more glass work....it's very addictive. Let me know when you run your glass mosaic class Matt, I'd love to come along.
This is an excellent course, and Matt gives individual tuition and encouragement to all concerned. The choice and colours of glass and the methods used to produce lovely pieces of work makes for a very enjoyable day and all concerned were happy with their results. This course is addictive and to anyone who is looking for an opportunity to learn or develop a new skill in a relaxed atmosphere with friendly like-minded people I'd say - give it a go - you won't be disappointed. I'm just looking forward to the next class!
Great fun informative day
As a complete beginning I came away with a beautiful leaded glass window hanging, enough info to feel I could make another and now can’t wait to join the next class to learn more ?
Family friendly classes.
Another class another group of students. Matthew le Breton was able to continue with makers of different abilities and intentions.
I was impressed how he handled a lively boy of about 10, building on the parts of to work which most appealed, whilst making sure that not only was everyone safe but also progressed their own projects. Matthew encouraged a calmer, safer, quieter and more thoughtful approach to help the youngster to employ his love of cutting (rather expensive) glass as a means of creating an abstract mozaic panel.
The foil wrapping was found to be frustrating for the less dexterous and Matthew also found time to assist in this. As a teacher myself I might encourage parents in family groups to take on more of an 'assistant' role if only to share out Mathew's necessary attention between other course participants.
I think that parents might need to be aware for some children, the whole day might be too long and more frequent food breaks and variation in activities or a half day session might sustain short attention spans better.
Matthew le Bretton's traditional and Tiffany stained glass course was all it promised. He takes care to have prior notice of individual plans and so he welcomes us with suitable equipment and materials. He is well aware of H&S issues and has protective equipment and gives good instruction, The gradual progress and demonstration means that we can all move forward confidently without overload. He is well supported by Nina, assistant, so that there is always someone to hand to help and remind us.
The regular monthly Sundays give scope for larger projects and investigation and I expect to be a regular attender to these workshops so conveniently located (for me) in Bradninch. What a marvellous discovery.I have been to several stained glass workshops in my quest for skills and to find one so excellent and close to home is a gift indeed!
This is a really good course, Matt encourages the delegates to bring along a picture so you have a project which interests you for the day. He is very informative and helpful, I would recommend this course to anyone who has an interest in stained glass.
Thank you for a great day
What a great day! It absolutely flew by. Matt’s enthusiasm for working with glass is infectious and his knowledge about his specialisation is vast! We packed lots into the day but it felt very relaxed.
We were able to work at our own pace as our projects took shape and if needed help and advice was at hand. I’m really pleased with the finished piece.
I can’t wait to try something a little more challenging next time.
A really engaging day, with a useful product at the end to take home! Matt was very helpful and enthusiastic throughout the day, sorting out problems but also inspiring us with his own love for working with stained glass. I'd thoroughly recommend this to other beginners like me.
The teaching was excellent with techniques demonstrated from the start. In a short time I was ready to have a go at the basics, and by the end of the day I felt completely at ease cutting glass and using all of the tools provided.
I really enjoyed the day, everyone was friendly and there was a warm atmosphere. I appreciated being taught by someone who is skilled, relaxed and happy to share their knowledge.
I am more than happy to recommend this course.
This Day Course was an excellent introduction to creating an item in glass. Matt was an excellent teacher and he packed such a lot in the time available but on reflection it seemed a relaxed day!
I came away knowing the basics which will be so helpful if I work with glass again but it is best to go with a specific idea of what you would like to make and in what format.
Matt was very attentive to everyone whatever they were making and however much assistance they needed.
I would certainly recommend the course to others.
The Sunday workshop was a birthday present and not having any previous experience I was a little apprehensive.
But Matt was most helpful and explained the whole process. Matt was always circulating among the group and helped over little difficulties. The day flew by and I managed to produce my little work of art. Will definitely do another day.
I had a specific project in mind, to make a stained glass window for a panel of glass on our stairs. Matt was so helpful in the whole process, visiting the house to help with practical ideas/colours. Then it was my birthday present from family to attend the course to actually make it. I was a little nervous having never done anything like it before, but learnt lots about working with glass, and have created a unique piece of art for my home. Matt is a great teacher. It was a long day, but well worth it. Would recommend to anyone. It really helped me on the day to have a specific project/plan/idea.
What a great way to spend a Sunday, the day just flew, Matt taught us all we needed to know to create a glass piece from our own design, I really look forward to joining him again for another workshop.
Would recommend to anyone with no knowledge of glass working or artistic flair (like myself) as you can still make a piece to be proud of.
Very much enjoyed this class, a first for me and was very pleased with what I produced especially as I am not very artistic. Matt was a very clear and patient teacher and I would definitely recommend this class.
Last week I attended the glass painting course run by Matt and was delighted (to my surprise) I produced a lovely piece of artwork ! The class was thoroughly enjoyable having the benefit of Matts' knowledge and guidance in his field of expertise and the day flew by so quickly with being so absorbed in creating. Very highly recommended and I certainly would like to return.
I’d tried making mosaics previously but my glass cutting was abysmal. It’s so much easier with the right teacher and tools! I’ve done 3 of these days now and each time Matt has been brilliant. He will help you develop a design beforehand if you contact him and I’d recommend doing that as the day feels like it goes very quickly. He brings a lovely selection of glass and you can learn a range of techniques dependant on your chosen project. Careful though, you might get hooked!
I had a great time on this course. Matt explained things very clearly each step of the way in a friendly and encouraging way. He helped ensure that I went home with a finished piece, which fills me with pride and happy memories every time I look at it. Fantastic day which I thoroughly recommend.
Matt is very knowledgeable and I was impressed with his comprehensive explanations of the process and variety of methods and materials used in his workshop. A very enjoyable day and although mentally taxing for a complete beginner an excellent end product. Thanks Matt.
I attended the course as a total novice and was delighted with the results. Matt was patient and always on hand to step in with advice & assistance when needed but was encouraging in making the piece your own and letting you test yourself. The group was diverse and friendly and it was great to see other people working on different techniques. I would thoroughly recommend this course to anyone keen to have a go, never have 7 hours flown by so quickly.
Attended the stained glass workshop with mat on Sunday and really enjoyed it , mat was very patient and helpful and I came home with a lovely piece , I would highly recommend this class and would love to attend another in the future.
Was a complete novice and delighted with end product. A truly therapeutic day fully focused on learning new skills and creating your own design. Glass is such a beautiful medium and Matt's teaching' patience and enthusiasm are fantastic. Good bunch of people all acheiving their own amazing designs. Fully Recommend the day whether you are a complete novice like me or more experienced wanting to hone your skills. Worth every penny.
Having already dipped my toe into the stained glass water, I came to the class with 2 techniques I wanted to master and left knowing so much more. 2 terms of evening classes had taught me the confidence to cut glass and copper foil it, but even the tuition about cutting on Matt's course was valuable as I learned new techniques and improved my speed and confidence. I feel ready to try came work now as well. Matt is very patient and clearly has a passion for this type of work. His enthusiasm is infectious and I only wish I lived nearer to attend again. Handouts supplied after the course were an unexpected and helpful addition. How many times have I wondered at the array of glass available to buy and never felt certain about the choices I was making?
Thank you, Matt. Your course comes highly recommended.
Wonderful course for me and my 12 year old. The time went very quickly and we learnt so much. We are both very proud of our pieces. Well done Matt for managing such a diverse group all working away on their own designs and each person requiring your attention!
Great course and tutor. Matt gently introduces you into the world of stained glass, including the various techniques available, for you to produce a unique piece of work. He tailors the pace to the course members and before long, after making a few tentative cuts into practice pieces of glass, you are creating all sorts of shapes with confidence. He provides all the required tools and an amazing array of stained glass for you to use and be inspired by. I attended the course in Frome, and had discussed with Matt (via email) what I wished to produce prior to the course taking place. Where possible I would recommend this as while 7 hours is enough to produce your piece of work, the time goes by so quickly. I would fully recommend this course. Matt is very approachable, and as well as providing all the practical knowledge, he is very patient giving encouragement, advice and assistance.
I came to this course with my granddaughter. Although we were both complete beginners we were encouraged to design and build our own projects. Through the day Matt introduced us to the techniques we needed while at the same time assisting other participants who were more experienced and working on some advanced work. He described this as keeping all the plates spinning. We thoroughly enjoyed our day and, most importantly, managed to complete our designs successfully. I would recommend this course to anyone who would like an introduction to stained glass work.
Always wanted to try stain glass crafting but thought it would be too difficult. I need not have worried because under Matt's tutorlage I came home with a lovely piece of stain glass art. The whole day was concentrated and I learnt so many techniques, so happy that I have enrolled for the next course at Bradninch. Thank you Matt for your patience.
As a young artist many decades ago, I always wanted to create a stain glass piece. We have been so blessed to have our wonderful stained-glass artist Matt Le Breton in Bradninch. My husband and I booked on one of his courses a couple of years ago. We created a sun inspired design to be installed above the portal of our house. I must admit. as painters, we were so unfamiliar with the technique, though Matt was very patient and supported us with the completion. So many friends and neighbours have commented on our beautiful stained-glass piece, and we are very proud of it! Matt is an excellent tutor and communicator. He has a powerful vision, and is an inspiring, energising tutor and artist. Matt also has a warm and friendly personality, and is very instructive and encouraging. We look forward to attending another one of his courses in the near future, and they are to be highly recommended!
Really lovely day, never worked with glass before but Matt showed us the skills needed to get started and helped everyone in the group to create their piece of glass art, perfect day for beginners or if you want to improve your glass making skills.
Had a great day learned so much from Matt our tutor I was a complete beginner but bought home a lovely finished piece of stained glass art would thorough recommend I will be booking to to i another workshop
I have attended several workshops with Matt now and loved all of them!
Matt is very patient, encouraging and helpful at each stage of the design process he is an excellent Teacher.
As confidence grows he leaves you to progress at your own speed but always helps when you might be struggling with technique. Mine was using the soldering iron! Sorry Matt.
Matt made two beautiful windows for my home, working with ideas with me and involving me with the choice of beautiful glass pieces including antique panels cut to enhance the design.
The limits of what you can create with Matt are only your own imagination, even if it takes a few classes to create one piece it's worth it.
Highly recommended....Have a go.
Matt is an excellent tutor. Within the first hour, after the safety training, I was cutting glass confidently. The size of the class is small so this means Matt can attend to each person individually, providing guidance and a helping hand as needed. Lending his knowledge and expertise he has helped me realise my stain glass design. This included the choice of colours for the glass, technical aspects to achieve the desired effect, e.g., acid etching and glass staining for the written text. An important consideration for me is that the venue for the class is nearby and the time is convenient being a day at the weekend. The cost included access to all tools, materials, and safety ware. The only thing I brought to the class was my design, although Matt does say he can provide designs that can be achieved within the day. I have had two sessions so far because my stain glass design while not complex is tricky to make, there being lots of small circles. All the pieces are cut and ready. So I look forward to my next session, and with Matt's help, assemble my stain glass plaque.
Matt's class is a great way to spend a day in an out of the ordinary activity. No prior experience needed just a willingness to learn. You will be fully engaged in activity and be surprised at how the time passes. It is interesting to see the stained glass designs that other attendees are making. At the final day's end, you leave with an object and a story of an experience which you can show and tell to family and friends. Each time you catch a glimpse of your stain glass feature you can say ‘I made that.’
The ancient art of stained glass is something I've wanted to learn about for a long time. I've bought a book or two and watched the odd You tube video but when Matt asked if I wanted to attend one of his workshops I jumped at the chance.
I've now completed 2 workshops with Matt and thanks to his help, expertise and patience I've actually managed to complete 2 pieces of stained glass and I'm really pleased with them.
The techniques and tricks I learned from Matt would have taken me a frustratingly long time to learn from books and the internet. There is nothing like one-to-one tuition with constant guidance and advice throughout the whole process from an experienced craftsman.
Thank you so much Matt, I can't wait till the next workshop.
Thanks to Matt's excellent demonstration and instruction techniques, within an hour I knew the basics of how to create a stained glass panel and felt happy to give it a go.
I loved working with glass and appreciated being taught by someone who is artistically skilled and clearly committed to the development of their craft.
Matt creates a warm, friendly, task focused teaching space and I wholeheartedly recommend his classes.
Really enjoyed the various classes I have done with Matt. He is a fantastic teacher - endlessly patient and encouraging. He manages to inspire you and make you feel you can do it....& in fact you discover you can! It is great to be able to take away a piece of artwork which you have made. I am NOT an artist but I was pleased with my efforts. Stained glass is a very absorbing hobby. I shall certainly do more in the future.
I was rather nervous at first, not being totally artistic, but Matt put me at ease and was extremely patient! He is an excellent teacher. I managed to make a couple of hangings and a lovely mirror. The classes were an enjoyable experience, fun and I met some interesting fellow students. I would recommend anyone to 'give it a go' as you may be surprised by what you can do.
At first there was the uncertainty that "I cannot cut and shape glass" but Matt quickly taught the techniques and created the confidence to have a go. Attended three classes and created two lovely pieces of work that I treasure and am proud of.
Would recommend Matt's classes to anybody who has wanted to try stain glass but never felt they could do it.
