About the Course
Lighten up your dark winter nights with Stained Glass, an amazing craft, colourful, decorative and adaptable to many different forms.
The evening class is designed to break down the techniques week by week. The normal course covers both "Tiffany" copper foiling and leaded styles. There is also opportunity for doing kiln fired glass painting, silver staining and enamelling. As I use superfast Dutch Gas kilns we can actually fire and return work in the space of a single evening. Bring your own ideas! You can contact to discuss by email the practicality of attempting a particular piece before the class.
To make your booking or ask for more information please click on the turquoise"Contact" tab above.
The class numbers are limited so classes fill up quickly, do get in touch promptly to book your place.
You will Learn - to cut glass confidently, to create and work to a design, to paint and silver stain beautiful details onto your glass and to copper foil or lead a piece together with solder
Ongoing dates to follow 6.30pm - 9pm on Tuesday evenings. ... please enquire for available dates!
These leisure based courses are run at the Devon Applied Arts Workshop ("DAA Workshop" for short!) postcode is EX5 4DU. Due to the care needed when handling lead (particularly for children) I have specific arrangements and procedures in place to ensure full safety at all times. It is also not advisable for pregnant women to attend.
Note that I am also running regular monthly classes on the last Sundays and some Saturdays of the month. Check my other listing on this craft courses site (look for the circles picture!). If you wish to book as a present for a loved one please do contact me to check on availability of dates and locations prior to booking.
If booking with a CraftCourses voucher for part or all of the course fee, please fill in the contact form above. Your voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.

Please bring your own Stanley knife if you have one and a work apron if you have one of those.

I’ve just finished a fabulous day with Matt creating a complicated and beautiful stained glass panel. I designed something I thought was quite simple but was actually very fiddly, but with Matt’s patience and expertise I have completed a piece of art I’m thrilled with and proud of. Can’t recommend this course highly enough.

Lost my stained glass course after many years when the local council made sweeping budget cuts. Couldn't believe my good fortune when my daughter booked me up for this while staying locally. Only wish it could have been a week! Thank you, Matt, for your skills, your enthusiasm and detailed support. Very much hope to come again!

It is a rare treat to be able to take a weekend “out” to spend crafting and I could not have wished for more convivial company or a more ideal location in which to do so. From being met on arrival to departure on Sunday afternoon the whole weekend was filled with high quality instruction in the art of stained glass, encompassing both copper foiling and leading, cutting techniques and glass painting. The latter was my particular interest as I have some experience of cutting and leading and my pre agreed project was designed around this desire.Matt gave encouragement and information in equal measure and I would feel confident to continue this type of work in my kiln at home now. I would not have been able to experience half as much technique had the gas kiln which he brought not been so amazingly quick for firing so that I could process the pieces through multiple firings each day, to accomplish colour and silver staining several times, so if painting stained glass is your thing then Matt is your man! Oh, and do stay overnight, the food at the Kingcombe centre was superb, plentiful, delicious and wholesome and the accommodation clean and comfortable, though WiFi and phone signal a little difficult to find. Maybe in hindsight another bonus as who wants to be distracted by the world from such a beautiful crafting bubble?

Rare to have the opportunity to work alongside a true master craftsman who has the patience and teaching skill needed to build creative and practical confidence in a short space of time. My 10 yr old daughter and I have loved making stained glass panels and learning glass painting techniques in Matt’s classes and now feel confident to try making stained glass at home. Highly recommend.

What a weekend! Went in with very little glass experience and a vague design idea, came out with a lovely leaded piece and a couple of small copper foiled pieces I manage to make in extra time, as my design was fairly simple. But one of the main message of the course is... don't rush! Matt is a patient and very knowledgeable teacher, goes through every step, including different techniques, giving you the option to pick your own 'glass journey'. We went through everything from glass cutting, painting, leading and copper foiling. Some students made stunning intricate pieces and skill level ranged from beginner to advanced, so something for everyone. Have to mention the amazing Kingcombe Centre - a beautiful venue in a nature reserve, which allowed us to relax and focus on our work as well as unwinding in a beautiful setting. I chose the residential option; the accommodation was lovely and the food was incredible! All locally sourced, delicious, and huge portions. This really was a holiday as well as a workshop! I went on Matt's one day glass painting course previously and cannot recommend his classes highly enough.

OMG what a course, what a day and what a fantastic stained glass design that we walked away with. From the very first contact made in booking the course to the last box of tools that we carried downstairs for him on the day itself this was a complete joy. Payment was easy, booking was easy and working within a classroom environment was made easy by Matthews professionalism and passion. Delivered in a friendly and personable style that encouraged me to believe that were I to attend again that I would be capable of designing and making one of those massive windows in Wells Cathedral. My partner and I designed and both worked on a large and complex design but others in the group went for a more simple design. Both looked absolutely fabulous. Come on folks find your creativity (let Matthew encourage even more creativity than you could have imagined) find a suitable day and have the best fun ever. 5 stars every time

We had a fabulous workshop day (brought as a present) with Matt at Welsh Mills. Really pleased with our duo effort finished piece. Have already ordered my starter kit for home! Thankyou so much Matt for your tuition, time, patience and understanding, especially with my Autistic daughter who got alot out of the days experience.

Fantastic day at the Welsh Mill workspace in Frome. Matt is a very patient and engaging tutor and we all learnt so much. Everyone took away an amazing piece of stained glass using our own designs and nothing was too much trouble for Matt to help us with. Great fun and very inspiring to do more of this wonderful craft. Thank you Matt.

This stained glass making day was bought for me as a present. It exceeded all my expectations and I had the most brilliant day. Matt is an excellent teacher so that processes which might at first seem daunting we were all able to take in our stride. All on my course were able to produce stained glass pieces which were beyond our hopes and expectations and there was a huge sense of achievement at being creative in a new way. Those who dropped out of the course at the last minute don't know what they were missing!
Thank you, Matt, for a totally fantastic day.

Absolutely loved doing the course with Matt yesterday. Matt was great and explained techniques and offered loads of encouragement.
I would definitely recommend this to anyone who wants to have a go. Class size was just right and the entire day was very inspiring! My piece is already hanging in my window!

I had a most enjoyable day on this course. Matt was a great teacher and has a volume of knowledge which he passes on to his pupils, giving lots of advice and tips along the way. It has inspired me to want to do more and I would have no hesitation in recommending to anyone who would like to try Stained Glass, you’ll have a great day for sure.

Absolutely loved the course. An excellent introduction in to the world of Stained Glass.
Matthew is a great and enthusiastic teacher. Having already been on a glass fusion course last year, I feel that I picked up so much more from my day with Matthew. In particular, thanks to some great tips I am now so much more confident and accurate at cutting glass.
I left the day with a lovey piece and I am now truly hooked. I can't wait for another day of stained glass and I'll be booking my wife on to the next course. I recommend this course for anybody with an interest in glass.
Thank you Matthew

Did this excellent course yesterday and couldn't wait to get started at home!! Matt is excellent as a teacher as he is very patient and gives time to each person in the class ensuring everyone benefits from his endless knowledge. He had lots of tips and tricks to pass on which was great especially ideas on keeping the cost of things under control as my reason for doing the course was to make things to sell for charity so cost effectiveness was very important.
Would recommend this course to anyone wanting to have a go at Stained Glass but be warned it is addictive and you will want to do more.
