Description

Hello, and thanks for your interest in taking one of my one-day weekend classes on how to make a traditional stained glass leaded window. I hold regular classes throughout the year from my professional stained glass studio in beautiful rural Leicestershire. This is a fun and friendly introduction to learning all the skills you will need to design and make your very own A4 size coloured leaded window 21 x 29cm. Students can choose from a selection of designs, learn how to create a full-size design on paper, how to identify and choose the different types of glass available, how to cut the glass to shape, how to prepare a window to be leaded together, how to work with lead and solder, how to use a soldering iron, and how to weatherproof the final panel. There will be lots of advice to help each student make their chosen design, which they can take it home at the end of the course. Please note, this course is NOT suitable if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

What's included in the price?

All materials and use of studio tools and equipment. Each student will make their own panel to take home. Coffee/Tea and biscuits will be provided. Please bring a packed lunch, or you can buy freshly made sandwiches, fruit, or hot soup from our village shop 10 metres from the studio. A list of accommodation in the village is available on request, including, hotel, b&b, Airbnb and camping options.

I design and make glass artworks for public spaces, private homes and churches, I make traditional stained glass and enjoy working with new techniques to push the creative boundaries of the medium. "I had such a good day on this course. Derek goes though everything step by step, gives advice and help where needed, and ensures everyone leaves with a completed piece. I had never done anything with glass before, but Derek made me feel confident in my abilities and spurred me on. The day felt like the perfect duration, not so long that you feel you could have done more. It's long enough that you aren’t too rushed at any point. There was a good selection of designs to choose from and lots of lovely colours of glass to allow us all to make striking designs. Would definitely recommend for anyone wanting to try something new and challenging. "

"Hi Derek, I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed my day with you last weekend on the painted glass workshop. There was a good group of people and the atmosphere was nicely relaxed. The coffee was good too! I had done a short course previously, but never followed up on it. I think I might have found it all a bit daunting. You made it all seem a lot simpler and straightforward and the notes that you have sent are nice and clear too. I have bought some dipping pens, clove and lavender oil. Yes, I want to try working with them. I didn’t get the opportunity with you so could you clarify how to mix up the paint. You say about the oils and powder in a jar, what sort of proportion of oils to powder? Do you grind them? Do you add water? Thanks for giving me a bit of confidence to do this, and for a lovely day."
