Welcome to the wonderful world of natural dye colour. Plants have been used for thousands of years to dye fabrics an amazing range of colours from soft to rich. Some were collected from the wild and others became cultivated. Reflecting this I have chosen traditional and gathered dyestuffs for the course. We will prepare small hanks of wool and then create a selection of botanical dyes to use.
During the day we can talk about potential dye materials to look out for in the kitchen, garden and hedgerows: what can be grown and ways to experiment with solar dyeing. A relaxed day in a lovely setting.
There is an airy shelter in the woods where we work and a compost toilet which is up a few steps. Hand sanitiser will be provided at the entrance to the shelter and by the toilet.
Please wear sensible shoes or boots as paths are uneven.
Susan trained as a textile designer and has been teaching craft workshops in spinning and natural dyeing for the last 10 years. A lovely day spent in the woods gathering wildflowers and leaves to use for Eco dyeing- leaving the print of the flowers on card. Then being involved in the process of using various plant materials to create vivid or muted colours on wool and fleece depending on the plant material and method used- very exciting. Susan involved us all in the production which was very ‘hands on’ and we were all given samples of the dyed wool and fleece at the end of the day. She was very well organised - everything was to hand and there were printed notes and book lists to take away to continue your journey into natural dyeing.
