Description

Marionettes are thought to have existed as early as 2000BC, predating actors in a theatre. While their popularity in mainland Europe does not cease, in the UK these string puppets have become somewhat of a niche thing, more popular among collectors than puppet theatres. For a reason too, they make great toys, ornaments and presents (especially if one is made in the likeness of someone!). I've been fascinated by these creatures and what their construction can achieve for years; I learned how to make them in the marionette capital of the world, Prague, as well as Italy and Oxford. I am particularly proud to have been taught by the distinguished marionette maker Stephen Mottram, whose tireless experimentation has led him to a starkly lifelike human movement. But just like woodwork overall there is no right or wrong way to make a wooden puppet, only the way that works for the operator - experimenting is always encouraged. I limit my classes to four participants which allows me to provide a more tailored teaching technique. In this workshop, stretching over six consecutive Tuesday evenings, I will take you through some of the key approaches in making a simple marionette. For complete beginners I will show how to construct a basic puppet with essential joints, and how to make a control so your creation can move. For those who have some experience in wood carving you will get a chance to try your hand at carving the faces, hands and feet of your marionette. While carving allows for a character to be given to a puppet, it is not essential - for those who prefer to concentrate on the construction and decoration aspects we will look at other ways to personify it. This can involve paint, addition of other materials (such as 'hair') or even sewing clothes for your puppet. All the materials will be provided, however if you choose to dress your marionette or add hair/accessories we'll have a chat about what you need to bring. Due to the journey ahead the three-hour sessions will mostly be intensive, with plenty of tea breaks of course. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me!

FAQs

For complete beginners I will have pre-cut shapes to work with so everyone involved would have a fully built marionette by the end of the five sessions. However for those who have carved wood before or those who advance ahead you will have opportunities to make design decisions according to your ability, for example carving the face or a jacket, or dressing your puppet.
