Spoonstock 2024: a two day festival of wood and clay

X

Description

Join us for a very special weekend of clay and carving in the heart of East Anglia. Across the weekend you’ll rotate through 2 different woody workshops with Nick from The Gosman Spoon Co. and Fay, The Woodland Haberdasher, where you will get to try out a variety of carving techniques, tools and woods. We’ll be axing as well as using shave horses and draw knives to make a beautiful array of wooden utensils and artistic creations. Find a style to suit you, increase your tool confidence and don’t be afraid to experiment. Let your imagination run wild! In the third workshop, under the careful tuition of Angus Beaton, and Clare from Wayside Pottery, you will be making wooden shrink pots and using a range of clays to throw and hand build your own bowl or pot. These will be fired and glazed, then posted out to you later in the summer. After lunch on Sunday, will be a freestyle workshop session where you can choose to continue working on anything you’ve made over the weekend that might need a few more finishing touches or spend some more time with Nick or Fay carving spoons and spatulas. This weekend is non-residential but we can recommend you local accommodation to you if you need it.

Father and Daughter team, Nick and Sophie started spoon carving to help improve their wellbeing and mental health, however, it’s become more than just a pass time, it’s become an obsession! We prefer to carve spoons in our back yard, but in the rain and snow, we retreat indoors. Our wood chippings have spread around the whole house! We started our own business in 2018, The Gosman Spoon Co, and now sell our spoons online and offer beginner’s spoon carving courses.

FAQs

Whilst extremely sharp, the safe use of carving tools is the best way to avoid injury, however, we recommend that parents or guardians purchase safety gloves for participants aged between 14-17. We recommend No Cry safety gloves.

If you would like to buy an axe or carving knife at the workshop, please let us know three weeks before the workshop so we can have it ready for you.

You don’t need much equipment to carve spoons. All you need is a straight knife, curved knife and small axe. We recommend the following:
Straight knife: Opinel Carbon No. 07
Curved knife: Mora 1635
Hand axe: standard small splitting axe
Carving axe: Robin Wood carving axe
Tools can be bought online at Woodsmith experince

Axes, knives (straight and curved) a draw knife and a froe will be available for all participants. However, if you have your own carving knife and axe, or can purchase them for the workshop, please bring them along.

There is space for three cars in our carpark, other vehicles will need to be parked in the village lane.

Our workshop is in a sleepy village in rural Norfolk, however, there can be fast-moving farm vehicles in our lane, we also have an ornamental pond in our garden.

Nursing mothers and parents with babies are welcome, however, we are unable to provide crèche facilities for toddlers and children under 5. All children under18 must be accompanied by a parent, guardian or other responsible adult over 18.

Guide or help dogs are welcome, however, please leave other pets at home, sorry.
