Description

I have been teaching this course successfully for over 10 years. Come and spend an enjoyable and rewarding weekend learning the magic of basketry. Have you ever looked at a basket and thought "how is it done?" Well this is your chance to learn those ancient secrets.

The aim of the course is to instruct you in a small group environment the basics of English Willow basketry. You will make a round shopping basket and a round bread basket. You will learn how to make the woven base; stake up the sides; the weaves of waling, randing; a track border, 5 rod border and a roped handle.

You will learn about the materials, how they are grown & harvested & gain an insight into the history of basketry in Norfolk and Suffolk. And you will take home your wonderful finished baskets.

Great weekend, Jonathan was an excellent teacher and made everyone feel welcome. My daughters and I enjoyed it immensely. We produced 2 products which actually resembled baskets and learnt several techniques. I would reccomend this course to anyone who wishes to have a go at this craft.

Warm welcome from both Jonathan and Willow. Supportive tutoring by Jonathan who demonstrated each step clearly and good pacing. He was approachable and willing to help whenever we got stuck though! I went with a friend both of us having never done willow weaving before. We had great fun in a small group where everybody was supportive. We now have a lovely unique small basket and bread basket that we can proudly show off these Anglo Saxon skills.

Response from Norfolk Hedge Baskets:

Thank you so much for your enthusiastic participation in making this a memorable weekend. Well done on your completed baskets and thank you for this review,

regards

The weekend basket making course with Jonathan was absolutely brilliant. We had a ridiculously fun time learning how to weave our baskets. Jonathon was patient and kind and created such a cohesive atmosphere with a group of strangers. He gave us as much creative control as he could within our baskets, letting us explore how the different varieties of willow gave different results. The weekend felt so therapeutic and I left wanting to buy a huge bundle of willow to keep playing at home! I couldn’t recommend the course more. Absolutely wonderful. I can’t wait to come back and learn more.

Response from Norfolk Hedge Baskets:

Thank you so much Rach for your lovely review. I can't wait to see you again on the next course to make a log basket. You certainly have the skills to take this much further,

Wonderful course, Jonathon is a highly skilled craftsman, and first class communicator and teacher. The sessions were well paced, so even the slowest (me) !! could keep up and complete the two projects. If you want to just have a go at basket making ,or you are more experienced and want to learn more then I would recommend Jonathon as your first choice.

Response from Norfolk Hedge Baskets:

Thanks Colin, really appreciate the positive feedback. Congratulations of making two very fine baskets.

I enjoyed a weekend full of fun and learning and returned home with two lovely baskets. The pace was nice and relaxed with Jonathan providing clear guidance throughout. The homemade cake was much appreciated! Jonathan was always happy to assist but I would have found supporting diagrams helpful at times to illustrate some of the weaves/strokes for the numerous times I lost concentration; these would also allow for further home-learning. Thanks for a great weekend!

I thoroughly enjoyed my weekend and am delighted with both my basket and my bread basket.
Jonathan was a very good teacher, explaining and demonstrating clearly. He was encouraging, willing to answer our queries and was patient when assistance or repetition was needed. It was lovely to be amongst like minded people. We were all beginners and learned both terminology and techniques. Everybody completed their small basket on the first day and on the second day whilst making our bread baskets we were able to consolidate some methods from the previous day and to try more techniques.
The only change I would like would be the addition of a brief break for a hot drink in the afternoon.
I will definitely consider signing up for another course with Jonathan.

He was very patient, and always willing to answer questions.I came away with two baskets that I am very pleased with. Thanks John, I'll be seeing you again for more basket weaving soon

Always wanted to have a go at weaving and what a perfect way to do it. Had a great day, learnt a lot and came home with a lovely basket. Now I just have to convince friends and family that I did actually make it! ( With the help and patience of Johnathan!)

This course was bought for me as a present and it was such a brilliant idea. I thoroughly enjoyed the whole day (and Jonathan's home made cake). Jonathan was an excellent tutor explaining things step by stop and being very patient when I forgot what I was supposed to be doing :). I can really recommend this course and will very probably book another one.

This course was excellent. A thoroughly enjoyable day with a lovely basket to bring home at the end. Jonathan is a very good teacher. He is clear, patient, encouraging and more than happy to go over something again. Which was useful! Ably assisted by Willow the dog and plenty of tea, coffee and cake. I felt I learned a lot and would like to take another course and make a different basket.

Jonathon (who made the lovely allotment basket that I’m so fond of) was a first rate teacher. Not only knowledgeable (it is his day job, after all) but really good at explaining, at demonstrating and then guiding us as we went through each step. Great venue too, and just the right group size - and home-made cake was a nice touch! I'm thrilled with my basket and felt I've learned a lot.

Brilliant course on basket making, i bought this as a Christmas present for my husband. Jonathan is an excellent tutor, demonstrates each step of the process with simple clear instructions and gives lots of 1 to 1 help during the day. He is so friendly and generous sharing his knowledge. We had a fabulous day and will definitely consider doing another course to make a different basket.

Thanks Jonathan (and Willow the dog)
