Learn to Felt - An Introduction to Felt Making in Birmingham

Ever wondered how to create felt? In this introductory workshop you will learn about the ancient art of felt making practised by nomadic people of Central Asia for thousands of years and now being adopted by textiles artist across the globe today. You will learn about the process of bonding wool fibres together using the wet felting method, from laying out the loose fibres to working them together with other exotic fibres to form a new and unique fabric. You can use your completed felted work to stitch into, frame, embellish other textiles with and much more. Included in the workshop will be tips on pulling out the fibres from the wool tops, creating even felt, how to incorporate other fibres and yarns along with notes to take home on where to buy wool tops and recapping the process so you can continue practising your new skills. Initially you will make a sample piece to master the core feltmaking skills. You can then choose to create either an abstract, decorative textured flat pieces or try creating a picture in wool. For inspiration bring along images, sketches and photos to help you on your creative journey. The workshop is in Birmingham, it starts at 10am and finishes at 2:30 pm. Attendees are asked to arrive at 09:45am so we can begin at 10am. It is suitable for beginners and people of all ages are welcome. Your tutor will be Emma Jackson, a felt maker with over twenty five years experience teaching, designing & making felt for her award winning textiles company, Silversoles. The workshop takes place in her home studio in South Birmingham with a small group of no more than six. Please note: the studio is situated at the bottom of a garden with one step up to access the building.
