This is a course for anyone with a passion for all things glass and will provide a series of sessions in which you will create a leaded panel consisting of many different elements and providing you with a detailed knowledge. Your final leaded piece will be approximately A3 in size. You may choose to incorporate some of the other pieces of glass you’ll produce on this course – for example, fused glass pieces or painted pieces. Otherwise, you can simply leave your fused and painted glass to stand alone as artworks. We will cover a broad range of subjects and techniques including the following: Tools and cutting techniques to maximise your glass, what and where to purchase. The “rules” of glass - what is compatible and what is not. Fused glass in a traditional kiln and microwave kilns (yes you can really create glass in a microwave) Freeze and fuse and modelling glass which will be later fired and added to your final piece if desired. Using paints, enamels and stains, quill pens and screen printing as well as the traditional method for glass painting. Copper foiling (Tiffany method) Glass applique/glass mosaics. Leaded panel – the traditional stained-glass method. Selling and marketing your products By the end of this course, you will have a sound knowledge of the various techniques, tricks, and types of glass and how they work together. By creating a simple leaded panel you can incorporate the different elements you have learned. No more than 6 students maximum, tutoring and follow-up support with course materials to keep. Accommodation, breakfast, and evening meals will be provided at a nearby 4* hotel and a light lunch will be provided by us. The programme Day 1 9.30am Meet at the studio to discuss your final piece. Tools we will be using, health & safety, orientation of the workspaces. Creating and using modelling glass Creating and using powders and frits to create freeze and fuse Creating and fusing items in the microwave kiln 12.30pmLunch 1.00pm Fusing larger pieces – tack fusing, full fusing – covering slump and other fusing elements. Setting a kiln schedule and firing pieces ready for inclusion. 4.00pm Troubleshooting – what can go wrong and why? Day 2 9.30am Meet at the workshop and open up the kiln to reveal our fused glass pieces. Back to the studio to do glass painting. We will learn how to mix glass paints for matting, some fabulous techniques on how to use alcohol, water and oils to paint on glass. Learn how to paint using brushes and quill pens. Fire in the kiln. 12.30pm Lunch 1.00pm Creating a stencil for screen printing and making the screen – using pre prepared screens. Using silver stain on previously fired painted glass work. Screen printing using enamels and paints. Either on new or recently created work or on items that can be copper-foiled. 4.30pm Review of the day Day 3 9.30am The morning session will start with creating a glass mosaic/applique piece using – a great way to use up scrap glass to excellent effect. 12.30pmLunch 1.00pm Copper foil introduction. Creating a standalone, or piece for inclusion into your panel, you will learn to clean your glass, apply copper foil, and solder these together. Apply patina if desired. 4.30pm Review of the day Day 4 9.30am Revealing the work from the kiln. Applying grout to your applique piece. Assembling and leading up your elements – learn to make up a leaded panel using the traditional method, understanding patterns, cutting lead, soldering, cementing and black leading. 1.00pmLunch 1.30pm Finishing off your piece, cleaning, and photographs. Questions and review of the subjects covered, where to purchase supplies. 3.30pm End Price of the course is £695 for four days – refreshments and lunch included on each day. Accommodation is booked separately and there are three options offered at different prices. Accommodation Teach Me has its own Airbnb cabin which sleeps a family of four with a modern kitchen/living space and double bedrooms and twin bunk room, plus a shower room and separate WC. Alternatively, take advantage of our special relationship with the Captain Howey Hotel in New Romney. This chic boutique hotel has delightful en suite rooms, plus bar and a splendid restaurant. For the budget-conscious, there is the Littlestone Hotel (next door to the Captain Howey). All bedrooms are en-suite and have a free access to WiFi. They all have a kitchenette fitted with a fridge, kettle, microwave and cutlery.
