This one-day course is an introduction to the medieval craft of stained glass.
Over the course of the day we will look at designing a panel, selecting and cutting glass, ‘leading up’, soldering and cementing. You can choose to bring your own design or select one from the many pattern books I have here.
The day will begin with an informal chat where we will discuss our ideas and designs. We will then produce our full-size drawing from which your chosen glass will be cut. I will show you how to correctly cut glass and help you in your choices of clear, coloured and textured glasses that I keep here in the workshop. We will aim to cut the majority of our glass before lunch ready for ‘leading up’ when you return.
Lunch will be between 1pm and 2pm. Please feel free to bring your own with you or enjoy Llandeilo’s many wonderful coffee shops and eateries.
After lunch I will show you how to cut and form the lead strips (called ‘cames’); we will lead our glass together and finally, solder the joints. I will then instruct you how to cement your panel. I will offer the chance to purchase a stand for each of the panels or I will fix hooks to each panel in order that they can be hung.
The day will start at 9am and, depending on how ambitious our designs have been, finish at around 6pm.
Tea, coffee and biscuits will be provided throughout the day. There is a toilet and washroom on-site.
No previous experience of working with glass, lead or soldering irons is necessary; the course is suitable for absolute beginners and those wishing to improve on basic skills.
All materials, and the use of tools and safety equipment are included in the cost. This is also free parking on-site.
To allow you the very best tuition these classes will consist of a maximum of 4 people. Groups of friends are highly encouraged to take part. Enquiries for larger groups are welcome.
Payment is required upon booking. You will then be sent all the information you need to attend
If you will be redeeming a CraftCourses gift voucher on this course, the voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.

This 1 day course is a great way to get your creativity flowing.
We had a fantastic time designing, cutting and leading up our glass and Simon is such a welcoming and friendly host (he even provides endless cups of tea and delicious biscuits).
If you’re looking for a ‘me’ day, this course is perfect. It offers a balance between creative therapy and thoroughly informed glass education - Simon is an expert in his field and has many inspirational pieces hanging in his studio to make you all envious.
I want to thank Simon especially for offering up more time than he should have in the evening to ensure that everyone left having finished their light catchers. We are beyond grateful.
I wish I could afford to do this every single weekend and look forward to picking up my finished piece.
Simon Howard Glass:
Thank you so much Katie. That’s such a lovely thing to say. It was a real pleasure having you both here for the day; and your pieces look fantastic!
Thoroughly enjoyed this day long course and the introduction to making a stained glass panel.
There were only two other friendly ladies on the day and we each created panels that were so different, and our own designs.
Simon took time to explain and demonstrate the creative process in detail in a relaxed environment.
I now have an even greater appreciation of the work and hours involved to make these special pieces as Simon does - he is a Master in his field.
Would certainly recommend this course - you'll be delighted with your creation.
Excellent teaching, very enjoyable and relaxing atmosphere. Excellent value for money too.
I was surprised and delighted with my finished product considering that I knew nothing about cutting glass or drawing or anything about stained glass!
I can’t wait to be able to do another course with Simon Howard.
Simon was very welcoming when I arrived for the course, he has a workshop with all the tools, equipment, books and a very wide range of glass to choose from. He helped when I needed help but also let me experiment with the glass creatively as much as I could as a beginner. I enjoyed the day experiencing a new craft with lots of tea and biscuits. I live a fair distance away so Simon kindly delivered my stained glass to me when he was in the area.
I learnt a lot during the day about the process of making a piece of stained glass, had lots of tea and chats with the group and got to meet his lovely family. Thank you so much for this lovely experience, I look forward to the next one.
I had a wonderful day on this course. Pre-course information and communication was excellent. Great workshop space, and supplied with plenty of teas and coffees throughout the day.
Simon really encourages you to create and develop your own design and then miraculously helps you produce it. You get to experience every aspect of stained glass creation from cutting through to leading and soldering. Simon is patient, knowledgeable and enthusiastic about his art and it was a privilege to be able to have this experience.
Great cafes for lunch in Llandeilo too.
Very highly recommended.
Thank you Simon.
Simon Howard Glass:
Thank you so much Rachael! That’s very sweet of you and very much appreciated. I thoroughly enjoyed having you take part in the course and it was wonderful to watch what you created come to fruition.
This is a fantastic course! Simon is a very knowledgable, enthusiastic and patient teacher who knows his subject inside out.
We were all thrilled with what we took home. (Especially as they were all our own designs)
I shall be back for more.
Fabulous day creating my first stained glass panel, everyone is amazed at what I was able to achieve in just one day! Simon is a passionate and talented artist as well as a great teacher, who guided us with patience and enthusiasm to create our work. I would recommend this course to everyone as I thoroughly enjoyed myself and would love to create another glass panel!
Fantastic course! Simon was very supportive, patient, kind and encouraging. It was a pleasure and privilege to be taught by someone who is clearly passionate and skilled at his profession! Thoroughly recommend this course and look forward to going back at a later date.
Absolutely fantastic day with Simon and the other students. Lovely informal setting at his studio. I was made to feel very comfortable from the start and was given loads of encouragement throughout the day, which flew by. Would recommend to everybody and I would love to attend further courses.
Spending a day with Simon is an absolute joy. He is an excellent teacher who is able to clearly explain what you need to do and why, and with care and encouragement. So often experts in their field (as Simon clearly is) find it difficult to pass on their knowledge to complete beginners, but Simon did so without ever making me feel that any question was too silly. On top of all of this, he is really nice guy! I'm sure I will do another of his workshops in the near future.
I really enjoyed this course. Simon is a great teacher.
Despite some of the attendees wanting do more complicated glass panels Simon was very patient and managed to spend equal amounts of time with each attendee.
I would definitely recommend this course.
An absolute pleasure being in the company of an extraordinarily talented man. His patience, clear explanations of the process, and knowledge of glass skills inspired us 3 middle aged women to produce an art work which we were all buzzing over once completed.
Thank you Simon, you have converted us and I will be returning again 👍.
Outstanding value for money. Simon was knowledgeable, supportive and very generous with his time, going well beyond the finish time to allow our very adventurous first projects to be finished. Simon has a good manner about him. The location is good with sufficient workshop space for the four people on the course to work easily.
Great experience, and I would go again and recommend it to anyone wanting to give lead glass work a go. Simon will be positive and encouraging even with the most reserved learner.
