The Corner Workshop offers pottery courses for adults. The course is for the beginner who wants to learn the basic concepts of clay working.
Through 4 projects over 5 weeks, you will learn how to make pinch, coil, and slab pots. In the process, you will work with templates, clay tools, rollers and stamps. You will design your own pot forms and decoration. Pots will be finished with underglazes, slips and glazes.
Some see hand-building as the "poor cousin" of throwing on a wheel. Nothing could be further from the truth! Building pots and objects by hand allows for much more personal expression and variety of form. Once the basic techniques are understood, anything can be achieved! I encourage my students to be creative and respect what happens when hand meets clay.
What will I make?
You will make 2 pinch pots and pinch mini sculptures, 1 or 2 coil pots, 1 slab vase or cylinder and a lidded box, 1 form-slabbed saucer decorated with a slip decoration technique. All will be fired and ready for collection after the course has ended.
Who is the teacher?
I’m a professional lettercutter but studied ceramics at university and have worked extensively with clay. I have offered a variety of crafts classes over the years and have a fully equipped (stuffed to overflowing!) studio that accommodates 6-8 students. I have lived in the Balcombe area for 12 years. The classes are relaxed, friendly and we’ll take a tea and biscuit break half-way through.
If you will be redeeming a CraftCourses gift voucher on this course, the voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.
