This workshop gives you the unique opportunity to experience the basics of two crafts in 1 day in your own personal workshop with one to one tuition. The studios are located in the cottage garden of our home on the Cambridgeshire/Norfolk border.
The "2 crafts in 1 day" workshop is aimed at those who want to have a go at both of these fun crafts, and come away having learnt some basic techniques for both disciplines. As this is basically a private tuition experience, the course is focused but fun, so would make a fantastic gift.
The day can also be experienced by just one person (to book this, please refer to our other workshop ""2 Crafts in 1 Day!" 1-2-1 woodturning & pottery experience in 1 day for 1 person".
This makes for a wonderful Valentine's or anniversary experience, and can also be enjoyed by a parent and child.
The morning is spent learning the ropes of woodturning - how to cut and shape wood on the lathe, understanding a little about the different tools required, and making a few pieces to take home.
After a light farmhouse-style lunch (which we provide), the afternoon then continues with a pottery session. Students can have fun with clay, focusing on some basic hand building methods to get them used to handling the material using the techniques of pinching, coiling, slab building and also throwing on the wheel.
A total of 3 pieces per person can then be chosen for us to glaze and fire once they have dried sufficiently. When ready, they can either be collected by the student (if they live locally) or I can post them on (I have to charge postage & packaging).
Refreshments are provided during both workshops, and a light, rustic farmhouse-style lunch is also included. Depending on the weather/time of year, lunch can be taken either out in the cottage garden or in our country kitchen.
The sessions are hands-on with expert 1-2-1 tuition - and the student will be able to use all the studio facilities. Each student will also be provided with a certificate of participation for both crafts.
We can advise of local accommodation for those wishing to include an overnight stay in the area.
Cancellation and a full refund can be obtained up to 2 weeks before the course starts. Start dates may be amended on request.
1. All tools, materials and personal protection equipment is included (eye protection/lung protection for woodturning).
Some smocks and old shirts are available, but the student may wish to bring their own. If they already have some woodturning tools, they could bring these along too if they wish. It is important that the student wears comfortable shoes and clothing.
2. Ideally, rings and bracelets will need to be removed during the workshops (especially for pottery, as they can mark the clay).
3. Refreshments (tea/coffee/soft drinks) and a light, rustic farmhouse-style lunch will be provided.
4. The woodturning workshop is equipped with a Record Power DVR-XP lathe and dust extraction equipment. The pottery studio includes a wedging table, extruder, large table for hand building on, two Shimpo pottery wheels and a large top-loader kiln.
5. The experience is one to one private tuition, ensuring the student gets the maximum benefit from the day with no distractions.
6. The age limit is 16+, unless accompanied by an adult.
7. We have insurance (IWW/5102205) to cover training & public liability.
8. All the student's woodturned work can be taken home. The pottery (up to three pieces each) will need to dry completely and either be collected or posted on once it is ready (usually 2 - 3 weeks after the workshop).
9. Students are provided with a certificate of participation.
10. We can advise of local accommodation for those wishing to stay in the area overnight.

We had a fantastic time at Blended Monkey, Simon and Louise both led us through our new crafts in an understandable way. They made us feel very welcome and were easy to talk to, Louise treated us to a lovely lunch too! We were very happy with the way we progressed through both sessions and are proud of what we made!! We had great fun and highly recommend them as an experience
Response from Blended Monkey:It was great having you and Ian in the woodturning workshop and pottery studio, and it's lovely to hear that you both enjoyed your day. You have every right to be proud of what you made! I'll be in touch as soon as your beautiful ceramic pieces are ready.
We decided to give each other as a Christmas present 2020, the 2 crafts in 1 day course, wood turning and pottery with Blended Monkey, managed to book it in July.
I have done woodworking which is not the same as wood turning and have never done pottery, my wife had not done either. The day started on time at 10am and ended at 5pm with one hour for lunch at 1pm.
Enjoyed both, good teaching in the wood turning and we both manged to produce the set piece of a honey spoon. Also, good teaching in the pottery, three styles taught hand formed, slab and wheel. The wheel is the hardest one and found the slab the easiest or more productive style.
We await the outcome of our pottery efforts when they have been fired.
Lunch was provided which provided a relaxation and chance to chat, with the hosts Louise and Simon.
Overall, I would recommend this Blended Monkey course, regardless of skill level.
Response from Blended Monkey:Thank you for your review Ian :-).
What a fantastic day! We learnt two new skills in one day and loved both. Simon and Louise are very welcoming and very patient in their teaching; instructions were easy to follow and very helpful and all aspects of health and safety were very clear. We also had a very tasty lunch. Both crafts were extremely enjoyable and very satisfying; it is lovely to come away with something we made (and a certificate!) Our honey dibbers are beautiful and have already been shown off to friends and family and we are looking forward to seeing out pottery after it is fired and glazed. We would (and already have) recommend this craft day - we had a lot of fun and are proud of our achievements. Thank you Simon and Louise.
Response from Blended Monkey:Hi guys,
Unbelievably happy with this craft day. Simon and Louise are so welcoming and knowledgeable. Really fantastic teachers
I learned new things and left with some lovely crafts I can feel proud of.
Response from Blended Monkey:Thank you for the lovely review Sarah. It was great to have you and Becca in the studios :-).
We really enjoyed the day (2 crafts in 1 day) and had a lot of fun with wood turning in the morning followed by pottery in the afternoon. Simon and Louise were knowledgable and talented hosts who provided a relaxing creative atmosphere. Their teaching style was excellent and allowed us both to develop our new-found skills into creating some freestyle pieces.
Thank you very much for a very enjoyable day
Response from Blended Monkey:Guys, thank you for the lovely review. It was a pleasure having you in the studios. We're also pleased that you found the experience to be relaxing and creative. After teaching the basics, we do try to give our students the space to add their own personalities to their work whilst ensuring we're always ready to step in when you need us. Again, thanks for the lovely review :-).
I attended a two day pottery class with a friend... without doubt the mostly relaxing activity i have ever participated in, I left feeling completely relaxed.
Louise pitched the class perfectly, a great mix of activity and pace; leaving us time to really enjoy getting to grips with the clay.
I am seriously thinking of attending a class on a frequent basis... i honestly feel the activity helped eliminate stress (you can't play with clay and read emails! :).
Response from Blended Monkey:Hi Louise,
We received a crafts voucher for Christmas from our children back in 2019 and eventually managed to book a date. We decided on the 2 crafts in 1 day with Blended Monkeys as it seemed like a good idea to get an introduction to 2 different crafts and perhaps to continue with one of them. It definitely turned out to be a good choice as we both had an amazing day, came away with a piece of woodwork at the end of the day and are waiting with bated breath for our pottery pieces!!! Louise and Simon were very welcoming, friendly, knowledgeable and patient. We felt relaxed with no unnecessary pressure.
Response from Blended Monkey:Hi guys,
Amazing day at blended monkeys, my husband booked this as a surprise, and I loved it. Really friendly engaging teachers, and such a lot of fun. Lunch was lovely and water teas and biscuits on tap. Highly recommend this day both wood turning and pottery were really interesting. Lots of laughs, thank you.
Response from Blended Monkey:Hi Faye,
I booked this course for myself and my partner as a birthday gift. With minimal/zero experience in wood turning and pottery, we were very excited to give both crafts a go! The day really exceeded expectations, with a very professional approach from Louise and Simon when it came to teaching basic techniques in an engaging and friendly way.
We left Blended Monkey with the satisfaction of having learnt (or started to !!) new skills, and with the added bonus of a piece of woodwork in hand which was very satisfying.
Overall I could not recommend Blended Monkey highly enough, regardless of skill level. The teaching is really personal, so can easily be tailored, and the environment is so relaxing and welcoming that you can't help but feel at home.
Response from Blended Monkey:Hi Flo,
