About the Course
The introductory pottery course is perfect for beginners who want to learn all stages of the making process, and for intermediates and experienced potters who want to develop their skills and learn new techniques.
Students will cover different hand-building techniques including coiling, slab-building and pinch-pots, how to use moulds, different decoration techniques, how to apply glazes and also how to make your work safe for firing. New students will also be introduced to throwing on the wheel and improvers and experienced potters can spend time developing their throwing skills. There is a good range of clay bodies, smooth and grogged, including porcelain and speckled clay, grey and black clay. We stock a range of decorative slips and reactive slips, and new glazes are added to the studio collection each term.
Everything will be provided for you, but please wear old clothes and shoes that cover your toes. The aim is to have at least three finished pieces, but there is time to make more depending on how fast you work.
Courses run on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Students who complete this course can simply carry on coming to classes to learn new skills and develop their ideas, to finesse their work and to try working in different ways.
What to expect: The Clay Room has just expanded into a larger workshop at a small yard, in a beautiful rural setting overlooking the Kent country side. The studio comfortably fits up to 10 people, classes are small in number and are usually between 5 and 8 people in size, so that you get plenty of one-on-one help, advice and support. All classes are friendly and welcoming, no experience is required, the projects are designed to get your creative ideas flowing. There are examples to give you starting points, and plenty of books and magazines for inspiration. You can make yourself tea and coffee at any point during the classes. There is also a social aspect to the Clay Room, and you will be invited to join us on trips to Ceramics shows and fairs, any competitions and open studios if you want to get involved.
There are four wheels, for those who want to have a go at throwing. But please note, this is not a throwing course.
If booking with a CraftCourses voucher for part or all of the course fee, please fill in the contact form above. Your voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.
What's included in the price?
All tools and materials are provided for you, as well as free tea and coffee.
There is a small charge for finished pieces based on weight: £6 per kg for standard studio clay, £8 per kg for porcelain and specialist clay.
Have just completed an "Introduction to Throwing" course and learnt more in 1 week with Sophie than in 10 on a previous Adult Ed Course! Class size is small, enabling personalised tuition in a sociable environment. Sophie is an excellent teacher, breaking down techniques into manageable steps and providing timely feedback and encouragement.
I have already signed up for a second throwing course and would like to explore hand building too.
Thank you Sophie & the Clay Room

I did two terms at a different pottery, but learnt more in 5 weeks with Sophie. She is an excellent teacher with a lot of patience. I’m doing another throwing course with her in August, then I want to continue doing general pottery in the future with some hand building and sculpture as well as throwing.

The Clay room UK provides a wide variety of ceramic courses at a very high standard. Classes are offered form a beautiful studio in Kent with lovely views of the surrounding countryside. Ample parking available. Prices are very reasonable for the quality of lessons received. There is lots of space for throwing and hand building - there is also a sociable aspect to the classes where I have met so many lovely and creative people.
Sophie's ceramic expertise is second to none and she is always happy to share her knowledge. I highly recommend the Clay Room UK's classes. You don't need to have any prior knowledge of pottery etc. come and try it!

This is an excellent introduction to working with clay.
Sophie is an inspirational, knowledgeable and very patient teacher. She explains things very clearly and is friendly and engaging.
The venue is perfect for classes, well set out and organised and in a beautiful setting.
I have loved being a part of several classes now and cannot recommend Sophie and her classes too highly.

I found The Clay Room on line by chance. I attended pottery classes many years ago and was thrilled to find a local studio near Orpington where I could pick up again. Sophie is an extremely talented and skilled teacher. She runs several classes for beginners and for the experienced clay workers. She has also attended and won several accolades of her own'work. This is the best pottery class I have ever attended. Thank you Sophie.
