Glass bead making workshops

demonstration beads annealing in the kiln

Make your own glass beads in soda lime glass. Suitable for absolute beginners.

In a few hours of tuition I will show you the fundamental skills of this fascinating and beautiful craft.

The sessions are for 2 people attending together and include the use of all tools and materials, at the price of £65 per person. Please purchase 2 sessions at time of booking.

Make your own glass beads by melting coloured rods of Venetian soda lime glass in an open flame, using a technique called 'lampworking'.
Alternating between a series of demonstrations followed by your practice and experimentation, I will show you how to form a basic bead, and then add decoration such as dots and stripes.
The beads will then be kiln annealed (held at a particular temperature to reduce internal strain in the glass and make them very durable) and posted to you. This will also include the demonstration beads made on the day.

The classes are held in my workshop located 5 minutes walk from the train station in the heart of Sheffield's Cultural Quarter.

Aprons and protective glasses are provided. Wear old clothes you feel comfortable working in, and if you have long hair please tie it back.

Cancellation and a full refund can be obtained up to 2 weeks before the course starts. Start dates may be amended on request.

What's included in the price?

Use of all tools and materials, including safety eyewear and aprons.

Took a friend on the bead making course as a birthday gift. A perfect choice.
Julia was excellent – patient, encouraging, and a really good teacher. We were making beads within 20 minutes of going into the room and we enjoyed every minute of our time there, which flew by. Our finished beads arrived with us within a few days, and it’s brilliant to wear them as a bracelet and be able to say “I made them”. Can’t recommend the workshop highly enough.

My sister and I really enjoyed Julia’s glass bead making course. The setting is brilliant - very intimate, Julia was a great teacher - sharing her knowledge and leaving us to experiment. We were amazed how many beads we managed to make and can’t wait to get the finished articles next week.
We’ll be back again for another go for sure!

My daughter and I had a great day with Julia. The course was fun and Julia was lovely 😊 The setting was fantastic and Julia explained everything we needed to know and was very generous with the materials. We are really pleased with our beads and would definitely recommend the course!

I would highly recommend this course. My mother and I had a fantastic time and were really pleased with our beads!

Julia is a great tutor. She was excellent at demonstrating and really helpful in answering all our questions. She was also happy for us to play around with the glass beads to see what wonderful and unique creations we could make. 10/10.

I have now done two bead making courses with Julia and have had a fantastic time on both occasions. Julia is a really good tutor; she explains and demonstrates techniques clearly and is on hand watching how things are going and gives good advice if needed. She is very encouraging and attentive. I felt I really developed some new skills under her guidance. You get going actually making beads surprisingly quickly and both times I have ended up with some beautiful work. The work is really engrossing and there is always more to learn!

Fantastic course! I am a complete beginner and wanted to learn the new skill of glass bead making. Found Julia's course through this website and I couldn't have made a better choice. She is excellent at explaining how to make a bead and use different techniques to personalise and decorate them. I was on making a bead within 15 minutes of entering the room and felt very supported, guided and directed throughout the session.
I was really pleased with the beads I made and gave the first one to my Mom on a lovely sliver chain for her 94th birthday present.
I left the day feeling like I wanted to learn and practice more. I have since done a second day with Julia and made myself some lovely earrings. I can't recommend Julia enough as an competent and encouraging instructor and the course as a great way to learn a new art or refine your existing skill.

A thoroughly enjoyable activity, very peaceful and highly recommended. Julia gives expert demos then gently guides you through as you make your own beads. I was very impressed how much was achieved and love wearing the beads on a bar brooch.

Where do I even start? I had an absolutely amazing afternoon with Julia. The time whizzed by and I'm really excited to see the final product (I only did it yesterday. They should be in the kiln as we speak!).

I'm definitely going to find the time to go back so that should be enough to tell you to book on yourself!

Brilliant course, loved every minute of it and would recommend it to anyone. I learned a lot and it was great fun. Only problem is I want to do it again I feel a new hobby starting. Julia is a good tutor and taught me lots, for any one wanting to try this I would definitely recommend this course.
