Half day lampwork workshop, 1-2-1 tuition.
Unless you are booking from the same family bubble, then I can accommodate up to 3 people.
Using the guidance from the UK government website there are new guidelines in place while attending a workshop - please contact me via the 'Ask a question' button for more information.
I am pleased to be able to offer various tuition packages in this fabulous technique known as lampworking - 'The art of melting glass rods in the flame of a torch'.
With over 14 years of bead making experience tuition takes place in my studio in the beautiful market town of Barnard Castle in County Durham, which is fully insulated and ventilated to offer a comfortable and safe environment for you to work in.
I am fully insured and have individual work stations to accommodate up to three students at a time. 1-2-1 tuition at no extra cost.
All my workshops run at a mutually convenient time, weekday or weekend.
This 3 hour session includes:
• Bead making tuition on making glass beads, decoration techniques including applying dots, pulling and applying stringers (fine pieces of glass used to decorate beads) and shaping beads.
• You will make approx five to six beads in your all day session.
• All beads made are to keep, posted the following day after they have been annealed and cleaned.
Before each session starts I run through health and safety and talk a little on lampworking and types of glass I use. I then demonstrate the technique we are going to do first before letting you have ago. I like students to get the maximum use of time in front of the torch making beads.
I studied jewellery design in the 1990’s but continued my interest as a hobby rather than a career. After discovering lampworking, I was drawn towards glass as a medium to incorporate into my jewellery designs as a way to inject colour and bring contrast to the silver used. In 2004 I started my business 'Suzanne Jewellery'.
Cancellation and a full refund can be obtained up to 2 weeks before the course starts. Start dates may be amended on request.
Included in your session is the use of materials and equipment as well as tuition on making glass beads and applying decoration.
Throughout the workshop refreshments will be available, tea, coffee, juices, biscuits and home made cakes as well as lots of lampwork / jewellery books and beads for extra inspiration.
Please can you make sure you wear an OLD long sleeved high necked top and any long hair tied back. Safety glasses are provided.
• Parking is on street residential area.
• Toilet facilities, are within my home.
• Age 14+ (under 16's must be accompanied by an adult)
3 hours (flexible times to suit)

I attended the workshop with a friend and neither of us had any experience of glass bead making, so were a little apprehensive. However, Suzanne was brilliant, very friendly, professional and taught us so many different techniques that we were amazed just how many beads we created. Suzanne has a multitude of coloured glass rods to choose from so we were able to be as creative as we liked. It was a thoroughly enjoyable day, challenging at times but very rewarding and I would recommend to anyone - thank you Suzanne.
Response from Suzanne Jewellery:Thank you Gill for taking the time to write such a lovely review. I am so pleased you both enjoyed your workshop. Suzanne x
Such a brilliant course! Suzanne was an excellent teacher…and just lovely to get on! The time flew over as I got to do lots of hands-on work and I’m really pleased with my beads! I am definitely going to return and would highly recommend to anyone…you’ll love it!
Thank you for such a great time, Suzanne. Looking forward to seeing you soon!
Response from Suzanne Jewellery:Thank you Jane for such a lovely review. So pleased you enjoyed your workshop. Look forward to seeing you again soon.
Suzanne, explained and showed us several techniques from "pulling stringers" to creating a "fish eye" before letting us loose in her workshop. We both thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon and were very surprised and really pleased with the results!! Yes, it's safe to say we're totally hooked. Thank you, Suzanne for a fantastic afternoon.
Response from Suzanne Jewellery:Thank you for taking the time to leave such a lovely review. I am so pleased you both enjoyed your workshop. Suzanne x
I did this with a friend and although we were somewhat nervous about working with a flame and molten glass before hand, we had a really enjoyable morning and gained a lot of confidence. The techniques that Suzanne teaches are fun and achievable, and we can’t wait to get our beads in the post to see how they turned out.
This was such a great day. me and my mum did the half day workshop and was really surprised in what we achieved. We have never done lampworking before and it was a complete surprise for my mum. After an impressive demonstration we were left to our lamps to have a go. Like all crafts, it needs practice, and we were left to grasp the feel of working with glass at our own pace. It was very refreshing to not have the tutor quickly take over the minute we go off kilter a little. We received our beads 2 days later and was incredibly proud of our achievements.
Be warned it was mesmerising and I can totally see anyone getting hooked.
Response from Suzanne Jewellery:Thank you so much for taking the time to write such a lovely review. I am so pleased you and your mum enjoyed your Lampworking experience.
We had a lovely morning making beads with Suzanne. She demonstrated lots of techniques clearly, to enable us to make a number of beads. I went with my 15 year old daughter who has some learning difficulties and Suzanne was very patient and encouraging, she didn't want to leave. Making the beads filled her with confidence. The studio was lovely, very well set out with lots of choice of materials to work with. A great course and tutor who I would highly recommend. We will have to come back to practise our skills and make some more!!
Response from Suzanne Jewellery:Thank you so much for your lovely review. It was so lovely to see your daughters confidence grow as the morning went on. Fab beads made by the both of you.
My wife and I attended this course, as it's something we've wanted to have a go at for a while. Suzanne was absolutely superb and professional with everything. We couldn't have asked for a better experience. We would strongly recommend for anyone of any level!
Response from Suzanne Jewellery:Hi Matthew, thank you for your lovely review. I am so pleased you both enjoyed your workshop. Suzanne
Had a fantastic time with a very patient teacher learning the basics of bead making. We learned how to make a basic bead then added various decorations, building skills as we went along. The garden studio is lovely, well equipped and has a kettle (tea is essential for people like me). Suzanne took care to ensure we complied with guidelines relating to covid 19 and I felt safe and supported at all times. I’m already planning another trip because I thoroughly enjoyed this one. Highly recommended.
A fabulous course with good clear and patient teaching skills. Suzanne was very warm and welcoming and her work space is lovely. There was a lot of freedom of choice with colours, design and I was made to feel very relaxed. Time disappeared far too quickly- I hadn't realised how much I'd been concentrating. A very mindful afternoon of being totally absorbed making lovely jewellery.
Response from Suzanne Jewellery:So pleased you enjoyed your workshop. Thank you for taking the time to write such a lovely review. Suzanne
I attended this workshop with my daughter and can honestly say if was fantastic. I have taken lots of craft courses and my daughter is an artist so we thought we would be easy. Lampworking requires a great deal of skill, however Suzanne was very patient and calm offering all the support we needed. Our beads then arrived in the post like little jewels. No faults at all and will definitely try and do this again.
I bought a half day beginners workshop as a gift for myself and a family member, having vowed to buy more locally produced gifts or experiences from now on.
Communication before the course was fantastic, very informative so we knew where we were going and what we would be doing.
On arrival we were treated to a very warm welcome in Suzanne’s lovely workshop, which was very well appointed with a wide range of beautiful coloured glass rods.
Suzanne’s teaching style was great, explaining all the health and safety bits and a bit about what she does, before getting straight into demonstrating what we were going to do. As the session went on, we got more confident with the glass and produced some lovely beads.
I found the process very hypnotic, definitely good for practicing a bit of mindfulness starting into the bright flame and watching the glass change shape.
I’m sure I will be back for another session!
Response from Suzanne Jewellery:Thank you Cecily for your lovely review and taking the time to write it.
Bit apprehensive at first.
Then thoroughly enjoyed it.
Great support and encouragement.
My beads were not perfect but I did enjoy the learning process and I feel I grasped the basics by the end of the session.
Will need practice and patience.
Suzanne was extremely helpful and patient.
Response from Suzanne Jewellery:Thank you for taking time to write a review Julie, so pleased you enjoyed you workshop.
The course was challenging and fun. Suzanne was an excellent teacher; calm, patient and encouraging. The beads arrived very quickly, as promised. I would definitely recommend this course with Suzanne to anyone who wants to do something a bit different.

If you have considered having a go at lampworking then i strongly recommend this course. Suzanne is friendly and extremely patient, her workshop is very well equiped and there are always cups of tea on the go! I only did the half day workshop but was amazed at how much was achieved in that time, and also at how fast the time went, a sure sign of enjoying it! I cant wait to have another go as soon as i get chance and if you are considering it then get on and book it. Thankyou Suzanne for a great day 😊
Response from Suzanne Jewellery:Thank you for your lovely review Amy, so pleased you enjoyed your workshop.
My daughter booked this course as a birthday present which I attended yesterday. I had a fantastic session which was very well organised to make it enjoyable and informative. Suzanne was friendly and professional making me feel at ease to enjoy the session. It was good to have all the safety aspects discussed at the beginning ensuring I understood the process of lampworking and relaxed when I made my own beads. I made a variety of beads under Suzanne,s guidance and would recommend this course to anyone wanting to try something different but truly enjoyable. Thank you very much Suzanne.
Response from Suzanne Jewellery:So pleased you enjoyed your workshop Susan. Thank you for taking the time to write a review.
I brought my daughter for her 14th birthday and we both had a really inspiring, enjoyable time. It was nice to find someone who was prepared to have someone of my daughter's age as many places stipulate 16. I've always had a fascination with glass work and my daughter had been keen to try some for a while too. She was particularly keen to work with hot glass so Suzanne's workshop was perfect for her. It's also nice that beads can be easily used afterwards to create a memento of the occasion. It was a nice environment to work in, Suzanne was very friendly and helpful and the biscuits were also very nice 😊
Response from Suzanne Jewellery:So please you both enjoyed your workshop, I look forward to seeing what you made with your beads. Thank you for taking the time to write a review.
Lampworking is something I've been wanting to try for a while. So when I came across Suzanne offering a beginners workshop, I jumped at the chance!
Suzanne was super friendly with a lot of patience, which was brilliant for someone like me who hadn't worked with glass before. The half day session went by in a flash... but it was so informative. Suzanne briefly explained her process and even the type of glass she used which I found so interesting.
The session was brilliantly put together. I was able to watch Suzanne make a bead, each step explained clearly and then basically have a go myself! As a complete novice I was surprised I was able to create what I did! It was thoroughly enjoyable and if this is something you've even remotely thought about doing - give it a go!
The half day session is brilliant for people with busy lives/work - I can only imagine what fun can be had in a full day.
Thanks so much for having me Suzanne. :)
Response from Suzanne Jewellery:So pleased you enjoyed your workshop Gemma. Thank you for taking the time to post a review. Suzanne
We had a great time on this course. Three of us attended this course, from three generations, ranging in age ( 17 to 70.) We had an amazing morning, Suzanne explained and demonstrated everything so clearly and went at our varying paces. The process is mesmerising and relaxing, we are all hooked. We received our beads 2 working days later and we are very proud of what we have produced. I would recommend it to all.
Response from Suzanne Jewellery:Thank you for your review Heather, so pleased you all enjoyed your morning.
I would like to say a big thank you for an amazing day I loved every moment you are a great teacher, I was super excited to see how my beads would turn out! I was so impressed I made a key ring out of them which make me smile everyday! I can’t recommend the course enough it’s a must do I will definitely be coming back x
