An introductory course, run by highly experienced degree qualified ceramacist suitable for complete beginners or those who are wanting to refresh their skills. The session will introduce students to a number of different clays, their suitability for different techniques, firing ranges and workability.
Students will progress through slab building, coiling and throwing projects and will also have the opportunity to explore surface decoration using coloured slips.
This is a very informative course with a practical base which is also fun. Small groups ensure students get the help and attention they need. Students have been amazed by the amount they have covered and been able to achieve in just a few hours of practice.
The studio is only an hour from Bristol and 1 and a half hours from London with good train connections (Pewsey). There are plenty of places to stay in this beautiful, scenic and historical area, choose from camping, B&B and hotel accommodation.
Places on the course are limited, so early booking is recommended. Feedback from students is excellent and many return to continue working on their own projects once they have mastered the basics. The format is also suitable for friends and family to get together, learn and have fun. Sue is happy to run the course on other dates for groups e.g. birthdays and hen parties and adapt the content to suit needs.
The course can also be used as part of a national qualification in the Arts ( Arts Award) for young people up to age 25. Please ask to speak to the Arts Award Adviser.
If you will be redeeming a CraftCourses gift voucher on this course, the voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.
All basic materials are included in the cost of the course, so there will be no added extras! Refreshments are unable to be provided at present owing to Covid safety measures, however students are welcome to bring their own.
This craft course provider has been awarded Gold status for receiving 10 or more 5 star ratings from previous students.
The Students' Choice award ensures that course providers get recognised for their efforts in the teaching and practice of UK craft.
They also allow tutors to gain valuable feedback on their courses and for new students to find the course that's right for them.
Sue was fantastic! I attended the course having no previous experience. I was able to throw and hand form bowls and small vases after completion and feel as though I have gained insight into the whole process of producing ceramics. Apart from the practical skills I was also taken through in great detail the theory of pottery from mining your own clay and recycling to firing and glazing.
If you want to learn the art of ceramic production you could not do better than a course at Fired Thoughts.
Thankyou so much for yesterday - what a great way to spend a rather dismal December Sunday! Jennie and I thoroughly enjoyed the day, learnt a huge amount about various pottery techniques and had the bonus of a delicious lunch too! Can’t believe how much was done in just a few hours and we’re looking forward to seeing the end results. Best wishes for a healthy and happy Christmas, Helen.
Response from Fired Thoughts:It was a pleasure to meet you both and spend the day sharing our passion of working with clay.
My daughter and I had a really fun day together learning about all the different ways of working with clay. It was varied, creative and relaxing.
We enjoyed it so much that we are intending to repeat the day with some friends later in the year.
I had a fantastic day with Fired Thoughts, excellent guidance with pottery techniques, patient and helpful in every regards. Very happy with what I made, can't wait to see the finished result once fired. The buffet lunch was an added bonus, with great vegan menu.
Great day with a small group which enabled Geri and Sue to spend devoted time with each of us. We made 4 items in different styles and was able to take away with us when fired. We learnt a lot from them both and would thoroughly recommend spending a day/s with them both at their great studio in Devizes. We will certainly be going back despite the long drive from Cornwall. Thank you both.
Response from Fired Thoughts:Thankyou for taking time to review the course, we hope to see you again soon too.
Thoroughly enjoyed my day here at Fired Thoughts, the atmosphere was very relaxed, teaching very professional but not overwhelming, the demonstrations were splendid, and the management of the day given that there were six of us was superb. Lunch was an added bonus, provided by the farm shop, and coffee and biscuits throughout the day were most welcome. I was pleasantly surprised to end the day with four separate items to eventually bring home with me, and I’m sufficiently excited by it to want to do more. However, it seems I’m in the majority, as trying to find a regular spot on a course seems to be impossible! I would thoroughly recommend this day to any budding potters.
Response from Fired Thoughts:Thanks so much for the review, so pleased you enjoyed the day.
Lovely class and lovely people! I learned a lot of different techniques and can't wait to go again :)
I attended this course with my daughter a couple of weeks ago. I would thoroughly recommend it as a really good fun experience. With the advantage of bringing home a piece of your own work. It introduces you to many new skills.
The course tutors were excellent patient and very attentive
We had a fantastic day learnt lots of pottery techniques. Our hosts Sue and Gerie were great very funny, thankyou girl, will definitely be back 😀😀
We went as a group of 6 but got so much help and assistance we all had a fabulous time. It was great to try so many techniques without feeling rushed and the end results were carefully wrapped and touchingly returned to us to our delight! Thank you both.
Response from Fired Thoughts:Thank you so much, We are very pleased you all enjoyed it. It's great to have such positive feedback.
My son and I did this course. It was a wonderful introduction that also allowed us to develop our own style and thoughts within the projects Gerry set us. Gerry is a great teacher and lovely person to spend time with, she listened to our ideas and helped us make them happen. I could not recommend Fired Thoughts more highly.... We both want to do more and more with them in the future.
My daughter and a attended this course last Sunday and had a great time. Both Geri and Sue were informative and very patient! We both managed to turn out pretty good looking pots on the wheel, albeit with a little help, we also made a pinch pot, a pot from coiling and a small box - you pack a lot into the day!
We will be back.
Jasmin and I had a great time exploring various clays and techniques. Some of which rung a bell from school many years ago, some that were enlightening.
It was great to have a day where you could work on different types of clay and methods of construction as it allowed my wife and I to see where we both wanted to follow up on the specific types of creation.
I am certain we'll be back so we can both focus on our own preferred areas.
Spent today with Geri and Sue, and cannot recommend it highly enough. Fantastic tutors who take time with everyone, ensuring you come away with fantastic creations. Atmosphere is relaxed and fun, very informative. I have never had any experience and was still able to throw a pot and make several other pieces with different techniques. The time flew and was hugely enjoyable.
My mum and I did this course a couple of months ago and I've been meaning to post a review since as we loved it. I've done a little bit of pottery before but learned so many new things on this course - about different types of clay and different techniques. I really enjoyed all the things we tried. I thought I would have enjoyed throwing on the wheel the most (which is what i've done before) but I really loved making a big fruit bowl sized pinch pot. The day was structured around trying different techniques, but with room for our own creativity too. Really good for anyone who wants to try different things and see what suits them.
The teachers were great. Answered our many questions and were a good laugh. I actually had terrible flu at the time and was so diverted by what we were doing and the good humour it was done with that I forgot for most of the day!
We will definitely be coming back for another course.
Fantastic all day course
Lovely studio space
Would go again for more
My partner and I were given vouchers for this course as a Christmas present. We would never have thought of doing anything like this. It was a full day and we really learnt a lot about different clays and their uses. We were shown four alternative ways of using clays and Geri and Sue really knew intuitively which methods would suit us best. It was a great day out and we also had plenty of laughs too, mainly at ourselves, with our successes and failures. Geri and Sue were very encouraging in our efforts and helped us greatly to get the best out of any talents we had. I can thoroughly recommend this day out as a great experience and a chance to try your hand at a new craft.
I took part in this day course with my son, the only previous experience I had with clay was when I was at school many many years ago. I was really impressed with what I managed to achieve throughout the day. The day was structured allowing us to try various methods, each method was not only achievable but just hard enough to allow us to challenge our abilities. Our tutors Sue and Gerry who are both highley skilled in their art made the day fun and informative, both of them showing oodles of patience and a helping hand for us to achieve our best potential. Both myself and my son really enjoyed the day and want to take part in another. Both of us would recommend this course... I all ready have.... you will not be disapointed.
