My friend and I booked on Brenda's 'Fur, Fish or Fowl' themed clay sculpture course, with doubts as to what we could achieve as complete beginners. We needn't have worried. Brenda is an excellent tutor, giving us background information on the clay being used and how it reacts in the drying and firing stages, as well as the vital do's and don'ts when sculpting the clay.
There were only 8 of us and Brenda was able to give us individual attention at various stages during the day to ensure we mastered each process with ease and confidence. We thoroughly enjoyed the day which was so interesting and relaxing, even though we were concentrating really hard! The whole group interacted really well and it was fun seeing everyone's interpretation of the theme. We all came away feeling we had achieved something and wanting to do more. We would definitely recommend this workshop with Brenda.
Response from Brenda Burgess Arts:Thanks so much for your lively review Julie! I look forward to seeing you again soon!
Having never tried my hand at creating anything in 3D form before, I have to say that each time I attend a session with Brenda Burgess - and I have now been three times - I not only enjoy it more each time but also manage to produce something I am almost proud of. The hours spent creating are precious and relaxing and exhausting all at the same time and I really cannot wait for my next course. Brenda's guidance and patience is wonderful as she gives you the confidence to attempt the impossible or that's how it feels! Thank you.
Response from Brenda Burgess Arts:Thank you so much for the lovely review Diana. It is really kind of you. I look forward to seeing you again soon.
Brenda is an excellent teacher . She was brilliant at explaining to me how to build my sculpture step by step and encouraged me throughout. She was helpful without being intrusive. She had provided not only the basic materials but many additional resources
The other people were friendly and the surroundings-we were at Godington House-beautiful.
I made a green man mask and every time I look at it it makes me happy.
Oh and there’s loads of cake and tea and coffee whenever you want.
I attended the Green Man day at Walmer Castle on 2nd May, and found it inspirational! I have no talent with anything visual (or so I thought) but under Brenda's patient, warm and witty tutelage I came away with a Green Man portrait sculpture I am proud of, and the desire to make many more sculptures of all types. I will now be looking out for future courses run by Brenda and will be signing up whenever possible. I feel enthusiastic about getting the dirt under my fingernails and the creativity into the clay.
Response from Brenda Burgess Arts:Thanks so much for your lovely review. It was lovely to see you and Simon at Walmer and I look forward to seeing you both again soon
My daughter, my granddaughter of 21, teenage grandsons, and I have been on various courses run by Brenda, and thoroughly enjoyed all of them. Brenda's courses are for all ages and abilities. Between us, we have covered a wide range of subjects, including faces, Christmas and Autumn wreaths, pots, 3D heads and figures and, at this moment, two of us are looking forward to making The Green Man! Brenda is such a good teacher, so encouraging and positive. Her explanations and instructions are very detailed and clear so that even a beginner gains confidence under her tutelage. Her welcoming and lovely, calm manner makes everyone feel that they can succeed. But most of all, it is such fun!
Response from Brenda Burgess Arts:Hello Marion,
Brenda’s workshops are an excellent introduction to ceramics. Brenda provides friendly and knowledgeable instruction so that you can explore your creativity and learn at the same time. Brenda’s classes are small and friendly and she quickly puts everyone at ease. I would recommend her classes to anyone who wants an instructive and fulfilling introduction to ceramics.
Response from Brenda Burgess Arts:Thank you so much for your really kind review Mandy . i always look forward to seeing you and your sister and always love seeing what you make ... and talking chickens!
A great introduction to working with clay, sculpture and just how much it takes to start this interest. Also an interesting introduction to sculpture of different kinds. Brenda is practical and encouraging. Although this was my first foray into sculpture, many of the other course participants were much more experienced and I was able to learn from them too. I thoroughly recommend the experience!
Response from Brenda Burgess Arts:Hello Gina,
Having had no previous sculpture experience and considering myself to have no artistic ability, Brenda’s classes turned out to be one of the most relaxing and enjoyable things I have ever done! Brenda is a very gentle, intuitive and generous teacher and enables participants to create lovely personalised pieces in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. I thoroughly recommend her courses.
Response from Brenda Burgess Arts:Thanks so much for your kind remarks Jane and I look forward very much to seeing you at Godinton very soon.
I have been to several of Brenda's clay sculpture workshops now and enjoyed each one of them immensely. I had not done any pottery or clay sculpture when I first went, but was soon hooked. Brenda has a knack of making even the most challenging projects possible to tackle with her calm manner and clear explanations of each step. At every workshop I attended I found a friendly atmosphere and came away with another creative object to liven up my home. My sons, aged 11 and 13, also did some clay sculpture with Brenda at a Walmer Castle event and were very proud of the results.
Response from Brenda Burgess Arts:Thank you for the really kind review Katherine. It is always lovely to see you and your family and I look forward to seeing at our next session.
I don't consider myself at all artistic, but enjoy art in many forms as an observer. I was browsing the Goddington House website for something else entirely, noticed this course and thought 'why not?'. By break time, I was feeling rather hopeless to say the least, but with Brenda's encouragement, excellent teaching and help, by the end of the day I felt that I'd achieved something that, if it survives the kiln, I wouldn't mind showing to friends and would be happy to display at home. I'd certainly do the course again. Thank you Brenda.
Response from Brenda Burgess Arts:Lalage, it was lovely to meet you and I am so pleased that you enjoyed our time together. Your finished piece is something to be proud of and I look forward very much to our next time .
