Course Start Dates
About the Course
Sculpt your very own moon gazing or ‘in motion’ hare! No experience needed as Jo will demonstrate and guide you through every step.
We start with a steel stand and aluminium wire armature that has been pre-made for you (although later in the day we will make an armature together so you can understand the technique). You will move features of the armature to your own personalised ‘pose’, making every sculpture completely unique. At this stage you can also place a personal message into the heart of your hare (poignant for moon gazing hares), or you can include a lock of hair etc. Layers of plaster are then added, with a final coat of weather durable colour and ‘kiss’ of gilding cream to bring your sculpture to life (the magic moment!).
Depending on the pose you have chosen, your sculpture will stand between 25 - 40 centimetres high and weigh about 1 kilo. A quick coat of matt lacquer applied after a few days will provide further weather resistance if you wish to have your hare moon gazing or running about your garden!
The day runs from 9.30am – 4.30pm. There will be plenty of tea, coffee, water and biscuits available throughout the day. Lunch is an hour, please bring your own packed lunch or pop to the fabulous Hillcrest Deli & Café 5 minutes’ drive away.
Jo’s rural workshop is spacious and bright, set in beautiful quiet countryside just outside the village of Hepworth on the Suffolk / Norfolk border. It's within easy reach of Norwich, Bury St Edmunds and Cambridge for those of you having a weekend retreat. Two-day workshops are also available for larger pieces (full size hares, boxing hares, Giacometti inspired sculpture etc) and for those who have been on a one-day workshop and would like to do their own thing!
Our workshops are friendly, fun and relaxing. They are suitable for all abilities and age groups (children under 18 must be accompanied by a paying adult). Student numbers are minimum of 3 and maximum of 6 to allow a spacious and calm environment. Separate dates can be arranged for memorable hen days and positive team building events (please make contact for details).
There is lots more information on my website - just press on the 'Book Online' button to go to the website (no obligation to book when you press the button!).
Coronavirus / COVID-19
Sadly, workshops up until the end of May have been cancelled. All delegates have been contacted with refunds or postponement to a new date. I have dates scheduled from June through to December. If you do not wish to book a date in case the situation continues, then please email me and I will make contact when social distancing has finished. Hopefully the situation will be improved by the summer and we can enjoy sharing the love of sculpture. I will be adding some photos of my work on my website (click on 'Book Online' to view website) over these quiet months! Please stay healthy and positive. Jo x
If booking with a CraftCourses voucher for part or all of the course fee, please fill in the contact form above. Your voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.

What a wonderful experience in a relaxed and very friendly atmosphere. As someone with little artistic creativity, I am very pleased indeed with my moon-gazing hare and very grateful for Jo’s gentle guidance. A fabulous day with lovely people, I highly recommend it. Thank you Jo.
Helen Anderson - - #29576
Response from Jo Garden Art:Thank you Helen! Everyone has a wisp of creativity and it was great working with you on your moon gazing hare with a lazy leg! Fabulous ;-)
I really enjoyed this course, Jo is generous with her home, her time and her knowledge. She was welcoming and friendly and set a lovely encouraging atmosphere for the day. I learnt a lot and am really pleased with my finished hare and look forward to tackling the home kit I brought away. I highly recommend this course to anyone.
Sam Paget - - #29561
Response from Jo Garden Art:Thank you Sam ;-) Just remember your hare is watching you! Good luck with your dog sculpture, Jo x
Probably the most worthwhile course ever - am so happy with my hare and the kits to take home are taking shape. A very welcoming home and people - I am coming back one day!
Gayle Thompson - - #29137
Response from Jo Garden Art:Thank you Gayle ;-) I showed a photo of your full sized hare to a friend the other day and she loved him, said how serene and humble he looked. Glad your kit hare and cat are coming along - please send me a photo!
Thank you Jo for your wonderful sculpture day and hospitality. Very good communication prior to the day and directions made it easy to find the location, despite storm Dennis making his presence known. The day was a present for my birthday and I really could not have had a nicer day. Being a small group of six made for a friendly and relaxed atmosphere and the workshop was held in a spacious, modern garden studio within the beautiful gardens of the teacher’s home.
Jo is a warm and inspiring teacher who prepares well and explains every stage of the construction really well. I picked up lots of new sculpting techniques which I shall continue to develop at home.
Such an excellent day which felt like a day with the family. So pleased with my sculpture. Can’t think of a better way to spend a special day. Thank you Jo.
Elizabeth Cherry - - #28455
Response from Jo Garden Art:Thank you so much Elizabeth ;-) I did spend most of the Saturday night praying storm Dennis would not scupper our power supply! Really glad you enjoyed your birthday present and went away with some new techniques ... keep sculpting! Jo x
Myself and my friend Julie attended this course at the weekend. I have to say it was a delightful day in so many ways. We were part of a lovely group of fellow sculptors, with several laughs, amongst periods of deep concentration. Jo is a superb teacher and lovely host, and her husband and dear little dogs were equally welcoming (Olive the cat was a little more aloof , but gorgeous anyway).
All the hares produced on the day were magnificent !
Kim Haredashian now has pride of place on the bookcase .
Thanks so much Jo :)
Sandra - - #27711
Response from Jo Garden Art:Thank you Sandra - Kim Haredashian was bootylishish! So glad you and Julie had a great day. Olive has just had chicken for breakfast so is having 5 minutes of friendliness before the scowl returns ;-) xx
We did this workshop as a couple as it was bought as a birthday present for me. A perfect gift for so many reasons; a chance to explore a new form of art, to spend time together and to create great and lasting memories as well as a hare each. We both made a hare that we are very proud of and will cherish. In fact all 6 of us on the course made lovely hares... a testament to Jo’s teaching and enthusiasm.
A lovely warm welcome from all the family... including the four legged, furry ones. A good location too. Definitely recommend and excellent value for money. We were absolute beginners and we managed to make a pair of hares. Thank you Jo.
Baz & Jacqui Wilkinson - - #27705
Response from Jo Garden Art:Thank you Baz & Jacqui - so glad you enjoyed your birthday surprise! I will be posting a photo on my website of the fabulous scrolled designs you made on the side of your hare - a wonderful idea! Jo x
Really friendly and relaxed course with excellent, clear tuition and a lovely setting- easy to find.
Highly recommended. The six of us all produced a lovely Hare, all different but all attractive. Thank you Jo very inspiring.
Mary Watson - - #27686
Response from Jo Garden Art:Thank you Mary - as you say, every hare is different but always lovely! Jo x
Outstanding day on every level. Joni’s a fabulous teacher and knows her stuff - will book the two day next time for more practice!
Linda Cope - - #27659
Response from Jo Garden Art:Thank you Linda - you made a wonderful running hare ;-) Looking forward to seeing you again in the summer for the two day workshop. Jo x
My husband, brother in law, sister in law and myself spent a wonderful day making hares. My husband had booked the day as a birthday present for us all. Our hosts were faultless. Never ending cups of tea and coffee and biscuits. We took a picnic with us and were invited to eat in their kitchen, where they gladly heated what needed heating. The course itself was perfect. Great tuition in a lovely setting. Will definitely return. Thank you 😊
Tracy Baines - - #27372
Response from Jo Garden Art:Thank you Tracy! It was a real pleasure having your family birthday event at the studio. The banter was hugely entertaining ;-) and you all created wonderful hare mementos of the day. Would love to have you back. Jo x
I attended the Hare sculpture course in January.
A warm welcome upon arrival in a well equipped modern Art studio in beautiful surroundings.
The Tutor 'Jo' was very informative and supportive at every stage of the sculpture, which made me and other students feel confident and at ease.
I thoroughly enjoyed myself and it was a very pleasant experience, which I would be happy to recommend to anyone at any level.
I am absolutely delighted with the Moon gazing hare sculpture I made, all thanks to Jo and her guidance.
Ann-Marie Thomas - - #27370
Response from Jo Garden Art:Thank you Ann-Marie - and also for developing a technique for creating texture on the final plaster stage ;-) Lovely finish xxx
Simply great day. Jo is a fantastic teacher. Nothing was too much trouble. The sense of achievement was very satisfying and I came away feeling thoroughly chuffed with my running hare that looks authentic and convincing. The studio is beautiful and well equipped. All in all a great inspiring experience.
Angie Woollard - - #27357
Response from Jo Garden Art:Thank you Angie! You chose the most fiddly pose to sculpt - the running hare - and created a wonderful result. Well done ;-)
I thoroughly enjoyed my day with Jo in December. It was extremely well organised and we all came away with an excellent hare sculpture in differing poses. All the instructions were easy to follow and understand for all levels. It made me want to do more crafty activities, five stars from me! Thank you Jo!
Claire Caseley - - #27164
Response from Jo Garden Art:Thank you Claire - I hope your lovely moon-gazing hare travelled safely with you back to the Shetland Isles and has been gazing up at the Northern Lights during these dark nights ;-)
I so enjoyed my day. Jo is obviously very experienced and knows how to put you at your ease. The studio is well-equipped and comfortable. All materials there waiting by our places. Taken step by step through a really interesting course, lots of fun and extremely satisfying. Much encouragement, laughing, and copious refreshments. I am well pleased with my hare. Gorgeous location too. I'll be doing it again in 2020. Excellent value!
Thank you Jo :)
Adrienne Bamberger - - #26845
Response from Jo Garden Art:Thank you Adrienne! Really happy you enjoyed the day - and experienced the 'magic' moment of the gilt cream final touch which bought your lovely hare to life ;-)
What a fabulous day! Jo is a very warm and welcoming lady and her studio is lovely. I had such a great day and brought home a leaping hare that I am very proud of! I would highly recommend this workshop, very well organised with all materials supplied and copious amounts of tea, coffee, biscuits and hula hoops 😊
Rachel - - #26403
Response from Jo Garden Art:Oh no! my hula hoop addiction is out ;-) !!! So glad you enjoyed the day Rachel xx
Really enjoyed this workshop. Jo is a great teacher and the facilities are fantastic. I have no artistic experience at all but the step by step instruction and easy to use materials made it a pleasure and I ended up with something I am very proud of. Couldn’t recommend it highly enough.
Dawn Dean - - #26359
Response from Jo Garden Art:Thank you Dawn ;-) Your leaping hare was lovely; so glad you enjoyed the workshop!
What a fun day! My Sister and I wanted to spend the day being creative with our 81 yr old Mum who hasn’t made any artwork in over 30 years. Jo gives great instruction, positivity and keeps things moving to create your sculpture. We all thoroughly enjoyed the day and have been inspired to try the process at home.
Nikki Lemieux - - #26336
Response from Jo Garden Art:Thank you Nikki! It was a pleasure meeting you and your family and so glad your Mum enjoyed herself ;-) Can't believe your hare is now in Tuscany!
Jo is an enthusiastic & competent teacher very patient with absolute beginners like me! The location was lovely and everyone was friendly and supportive. I never thought I could create something artistic but Hepworth the Hare will take pride of place at home. My friends are planning to book on a course next spring and I will be back ! Thanks for a great day Jo ! X
Carol - - #25745
Response from Jo Garden Art:Thank you Carol! So glad 'Hepworth' managed the long journey home and now has views of canal boats going past your window ;-) Looking forward to seeing you again soon. Jo x
Had a lovely day yesterday on the one day Hare Workshop. Jo is a very patient teacher and full of encouragement for a total beginner! Jo leads you through each step with clear instruction and demonstration and provides lots of help when needed. A thoroughly enjoyable day, meeting new people and returning home with a sculpture I thought would have been well beyond my capabilities. I would love to do it again.
Valerie Coombe - - #25707
Response from Jo Garden Art:Thank you for your review Val! So pleased you enjoyed the day and are proud of your moongazing hare ;-)
What a brilliant day! Jo is an excellent tutor very patient and guides you through the project so well that everyone comes away with a really impressive hare even without any prior experience or skill. The environment is lovely and Jo and Andy are both so friendly and welcoming (Tula and Mia are gorgeous too). The information you get prior to the workshop is clear and informative and the day itself is very well organised. I would thoroughly recommend this workshop.
Nicola - - #25044
Response from Jo Garden Art:Thank you for your comments and really pleased you loved the day Nicola! You created wonderful detail on your moon gazing hare. ;-)
I treated myself and my husband Jeff to this one day course for our 19th anniversary (which is bronze, well only painted bronze but looks so good). Jo really is a brilliant, clear and friendly tutor who guided a completely non creative Jeff into a great hare artist ! We had a fantastic day, the dogs are so friendly and the studio is modern and bright. I recommend this day to everyone and I will send a few friends and family on it for unique Christmas and birthday gifts. Can’t wait to return and have started saving for a 2 day course.
Lynn - - #24962
Response from Jo Garden Art:Thank you Lynn! It was a pleasure having you and Jeff here on Saturday ;-) And didn't Jeff do well! I love it when someone say's they are not creative - then go on to pull a hidden talent out of the hat!
Without doubt one of the best courses I have ever been on and highly recommended. Jo's home and studio is beautiful and she is warm, welcoming and friendly - plus a great tutor too! She is brilliant at explaining what will happen, showing you what to do in bite size chunks and then encouraging you to do the work with the bare minimum of help.
I never thought I would turn a basic wire skeleton into such a lovely piece of art which has a memento of my late mum enclosed inside. It will forever have a special place in my garden.
All six of us were total beginners and we all did incredibly well. Would definitely be happy to go back and make something else another time. Thanks Jo (and Andy, Tula and Mia).
Annette James - - #24957
Response from Jo Garden Art:Thank you for such a lovely review Annette. Your moon gazing hare is beautiful and I am so pleased it will have a special place in your garden xx
An absolutely wonderful day in a beautiful environment and led by Jo who is such a clever tutor. Jo made sure we all had the help we needed and 6 amazing sculptures were created by 6 people who had not a clue what we were doing at the start. A wonderful day with a special output.
Sally Austin - - #24947
Response from Jo Garden Art:Thank you so much for your review Sally! Everyone has an art genie just waiting to be tickled ;-) I'm sure your Mum will be thrilled with your stunning leaping hare. I'm looking forward to working with you on your full sized standing hare for your own garden.
Thoroughly enjoyable day. Jo was friendly and welcoming and provided easy to follow instructions and modelling. Everything was provided so all we brought was ourselves and some lunch.
I had great fun and lots of laughs with friends as we made our hares. Definitely will do this again as came away with a hare to give mum for Christmas and now want to make one to keep for myself.
Maggie - - #24132
Response from Jo Garden Art:Thank you Maggie! Really happy you made a wonderful hare for your Mum despite your injured shoulder ;-) Looking forward to seeing you again.
What a brilliant day! I have never attempted anything like this before and believed I didn’t have a flair for this type of art. Jo was a great instructor and with her step by step guide she explained and showed us the individual processes to achieve a good-looking hare! The modern studio we worked in was lovely, bright and airy with beautiful views overlooking the garden and fields.
A great day out whereby you can use your creative talents or in my case, learn a new skill.
Yvonne Martin - - #24011
Response from Jo Garden Art:Thanks Yvonne! So glad you enjoyed the day and loved your very own masterpiece ;-) Very pleased you like my new studio - I'm as proud as punch with it and so lucky to have such a beautiful space to be creative in.
What a fabulous day in a fabulous setting. I really never expected to leave with such a wonderful hare that I am proud to display as I had told Jo, our teacher that she would have her work cut out with me!!! It is such a simple but effective technique that you can’t go wrong with. Jo was a great teacher, keeping an eye on us all, correcting us if needed but she will only give you as much or as little help as you want. The art studio is set in a wonderful and beautiful garden and Jo made us all feel so welcome.
Sarah - - #23969
Response from Jo Garden Art:Thank you for your great review Sarah! It’s a privilege to be involved with someone discovering a hidden talent ;-)
The hare sculpture day was part of my mini-hen weekend. I wanted the weekend to leave us with a reminder (apart from Prosecco overload!), and wow what a result! We now all have our own funky hares as we decided to go a bit crazy with the designs – mine is called Beyonce as she has a rather generous posterior! I can’t wait to show her off! We all thoroughly enjoyed the day and it was so relaxing and fun. A great day out – I would definitely recommend it and Jo is a lovely teacher!
Rebecca Moulding - - #23963
Response from Jo Garden Art:What a pleasure it was being part of your hen party weekend ;-). I loved the ‘funky hares’ and I’m sure they will ‘toasted’ to frequently. Have a wonderful wedding and I wish you every happiness for the future.
What a fantastic day! Not only did I come out of the workshop with a personalised sculpture which I would be happy to display in my home, I also learned how to design and develop a piece of artwork which was immensely satisfying. A great way to chill and socialise, and I now feel confident to try other artistic things. Would thoroughly recommend!
Pauline Prockter - - #23962
Response from Jo Garden Art:Thank you for your comments Pauline, your running hare was fabulous!
I have just completed the Hare Workshop Day and it was amazing! I had so much fun creating my own masterpiece. It was a fun, relaxing atmosphere and who knew, with Jo’s guidance, I would be taking home my own Hare to display. I shall be booking again.
Rachael - - #23961
Response from Jo Garden Art:Thank you Rachael! So glad you had a great day and thank you also for sending me a photo of your hare in ‘pride of place’ on your sideboard ;-)
