This is a 5-week course. We meet once a week and each class lasts 3 hours from 6:30 tp 9:30pm The June course meets each Tuesday from 21 June to 19 July.
The course is for the beginner who wants to learn the basic concepts of clay working. Through 4 or 5 projects, you will learn how to make pinch, coil, and slab pots. In the process, you will work with templates, clay tools, rollers and stamps. You will design your own pot forms and decoration. Pots will be finished with underglazes, slips and glazes.
Some see hand-building as the "poor cousin" of throwing on a wheel. Nothing could be further from the truth! Building pots and objects by hand allows for much more personal expression and variety of form. Once the basic techniques are understood, anything can be achieved! I encourage my students to be creative and respect what happens when hand meets clay. All will be fired and ready for collection after the course has ended.
Who is the teacher?
I’m a professional lettercutter but studied ceramics at university and have worked extensively with clay. I have offered a variety of crafts classes over the years and have a fully equipped (stuffed to overflowing!) studio that accommodates 6-8 students. I have lived in the Balcombe area for 15 years. The classes are relaxed, friendly and we’ll take a tea break half-way through.
Cancellation and a full refund can be obtained up to 2 weeks before the course starts. Start dates may be amended on request.
5 weeks (6:30pm to 9:30pm)

A delight. In fact so good, I (and another person) went round for a second introductory course, as that was the only time available that suited me.
Informal weekly meeting under Julie's helpful, enthusiastic guidance. Even though this was my second introductory course, she had thoughtfully changed the course content just enough for us to be encountering new challenges at every lesson.
