About the Course
3 day residential art course, based at Flatford Mill, a historic property which features in many Constable paintings. Run by the Field Studies Council.
This course is for those who enjoy walking and wish to record their impressions of the landscape. The skill of the quick sketch is an art form of its own. This course is designed to develop your skills in producing quick sketches on location, increasing your confidence and enjoyment and absorbing enough detail to develop future projects. Prior drawing ability is not required, just an enthusiasm to explore different approaches to drawing and sketching. The intention is to walk each day for a distance of around five miles, at an easy pace, stopping at intervals to sketch and discuss the inspirations of the scenes around us. We will take a picnic lunch. Time in the studio, including evenings, will be spent on demonstrations, exercises and discussions on colour, tone and composition
Linda Matthews has worked as a full time artist and tutor for 11 years - her studio and gallery are in the Norfolk Broads. Inspired by everything around her, she enjoys sharing the essentials of watercolour in the studio so you can experience fully the freedom of painting from life - en plein air - out of doors. She works professionally in most media. Her philosophy for painting is ‘Wherever you look there is something to paint. You can never be bored with a pencil, a sketchbook and a paintbox’.
Bring a friend! If you are attending a course at Flatford Mill at the sole occupancy price, we are offering a special rate for a friend or partner not enrolled on the course to also stay at £50 per night for dinner, bed and breakfast. Please get in touch directly to book this offer.
Flatford Mill lies at the heart of the Dedham Vale, on the banks of the River Stour near the Suffolk-Essex border. The Centre buildings, particularly the Mill and Willy Lott’s House, are instantly recognisable since they feature in many paintings by John Constable. The rich mosaic of lowland landscapes, wildlife habitats and places of historic interest are all reflected in our extensive programme of courses.
The Centre is located between Colchester and Ipswich and is about 10 miles from each, approximately 2 miles from the A12.
