About the Course
The Field Studies Council runs residential art courses at historic Flatford Mill.
This drawing course is for the confident amateur, student and professional artist who is interested in developing an interdisciplinary practice in drawing and movement. Stepping out of the field centre the landscape of the Dedham Vale will offer us the source material for active drawing and physical movement of the body in combination or separately. Participants will be able to choose the amount of time they want to engage in either movement or drawing depending on their specific interests. Some participants will want to develop an exploration of the subject in physical movement more than drawing. Conversely, other participants may wish develop physicality, movement and expression within their drawing and not in the body alone. Both approaches will support the context of the course and the rewards of the journey for the group.
The course offers a unique opportunity to make a personal enquiry into the natural relationship between drawing and movement and our position within that. The course is led by Jevan and Debbie Watkins Jones as a continuation of their own collaborative investigation into the 'mark' - that both body and drawing material makes in the space - whether permanent or transient.
Bring a friend! If you are attending a course at Flatford Mill at the sole occupancy price, we are offering a special rate for a friend or partner not enrolled on the course to also stay at £50 per night for dinner, bed and breakfast. Please get in touch directly to book this offer.
Flatford Mill lies at the heart of the Dedham Vale, on the banks of the River Stour near the Suffolk-Essex border. The Centre buildings, particularly the Mill and Willy Lott’s House, are instantly recognisable since they feature in many paintings by John Constable. The rich mosaic of lowland landscapes, wildlife habitats and places of historic interest are all reflected in our extensive programme of courses.
The Centre is located between Colchester and Ipswich and is about 10 miles from each, approximately 2 miles from the A12.
