About the Course

Learn how to safely saw, chisel, carve and sand your own Green Man wooden hanging. This two day course runs from 10am-3pm on both Saturday 18th August and Sunday 19th August - which should allow adequate time to complete your piece.

The Green Man is prominent in many ancient cultures including the Romans, Greeks, Celts and early Christians. In each, the head of a man with a mask of leaves is depicting a close relationship between humans and nature. A leaf clad statue of Dionysus in Naples, Italy dating back to 420 BC is often considered the first of the Green Man images and is the precursor to the leaf crowned lord of the wilderness & nature popularised in the middle ages.

With the advent of today’s environmental and green movements, this vision has been adopted as a marketing tool and is once again being recognised as an icon of the forest.

This course will provide the opportunity for you to spend time in our specially designed outdoor classroom connecting back with nature while creating your own age-old symbol of man’s relationship with nature.

Tutor – Andy (the Tree Pirate)

Andy has been an itinerate artist working with wood since 1999. A founder member of the Treepirates Chainsaw Carving Team, he is always inspired by nature and the green wood since his youth in Sussex. He has carved in several countries, through mountains of sawdust and woodchip in a lifetimes journey deep into the heart the of the wood. Working alone, and in collaboration with others, his aim is always to find the good in the wood.
