Set in the stunning rolling hills of Speyside at the very heart of malt whisky country in the scottish highlands.
No previous skills required for this fun and creative workshop, in making a rustic stool from a log to take back with you and proudly display in your home. You will be shown how to cleave, trim and shave the stool legs on the shave horse. Form tenons on the stool legs with a tenon cutter and draw knife. Then shape the slab for the seat of the stool, drill out the leg holes with a hand auger and finally assemble the stool.
An introduction to Ged - Creator and Tutor at Gedwood:
If you're thinking about doing a workshop at Gedwood or buying one of our handcrafted products, we thought it might be handy for you to know a bit more about the teacher and creator!
Ged has been a Countryside ranger for Moray Council for 20 years. He studied forestry at Bangor University and not surprisingly he enjoys being outdoors with nature. Ged first got into green woodworking through renovating his house and garden. He built his own bespoke kitchen from wood and taught himself as he went. He enjoyed it so much he decided he'd like to teach others how to craft beautiful items from natural resources.
Ged's interests include hill walking, bird watching, yoga, conservation, environmental issues and northern soul. He's a very calm and encouraging teacher and an all round great human being!

Attended the course with my 12 year old son and we had a great time learning and making our own stools which will be fantastic gifts proudly presented to the Grandparents.

What a great day of getting new skills and leaving with our very own stools. Opened a whole new universe, got new skills and rekindled my interest in making things. Excellent tuition and well-equipped workshop. Thanks, Ged!
Response from Gedwood:Thanks Gilda. Glad you got a lot out of the course and hope to see you again on one of my courses😊
The most relaxing day I've had in a while, tuning out from the world in a stunning setting, and with a cracking wee stool to take home at the end of it. Ged is knowledgeable and patient, the course is well paced and the workshop is a pleasure to work in. Highly recommend.
Response from Gedwood:Thanks Ruth. Hope you enjoy your handcrafted stool😊
Great course, good choice of materials, good quality and sharp tools and helpful tuition. You are able to work at your own pace with help on hand should you need it. All in all an instructive but overall fun day.
Response from Gedwood:Thanks and glad you enjoyed the course Ray. And see you on another course some time in the near future!
A great fun course. Amazingly satisfying taking a few pieces from mother nature, and with only a few hand tools, ending up with a lovely little three legged stool. Amazingly patient tutor, juggling us all at different stages throughout the day. And astonishing how we all ended up something that was totally different to the others. Heartily recommend this for a fab day out, with the advantage of having something useful to take home too.
Response from Gedwood:Thanks so much Elisabeth. hope to see you again on another course. Enjoy your tumblers!
wonderful tutor and excellent course, ged takes time to teach and support you in the making of the stool, wonderful tools, authentic tool shed and environment! highly recommend

Can't recommend Ged and this session highly enough! Ged is tremendously knowledgeable and his calm, friendly and encouraging approach puts you at ease right away and really instills confidence in the absolute beginner. The beautiful, brilliantly equipped workshop is the ideal location and I'm absolutely delighted by the finished product! A huge thanks to Ged, can't wait to build my skills and experience at future workshops :)
Response from Gedwood:Ah thanks Mike! Hope to see you again on a workshop😊
We did this in July 2021. Ged rearranged the date to accommodate us (due to the pandemic). Making the stool from scratch was really eye opening to the efforts craftspeople made before machines took over. He’s was very informative but gave us space and time to develop our stool at our own pace.
Great fun making a stool. Ged was great explaining and demonstrating each stage before letting us do ours. It was nice having the freedom to experiment and make our stools but also knowing Ged was there to help if we needed him. All of the tools we used were authentic and in great condition. Great fun with a final product to be proud of.
Booked the stool making workshop as a family group. Ged gave great instruction, and we made some lovely stools. Highly recommended, will definately book again.
Response from Gedwood:Thanks Jacqui, hope to see you and the family again on a course
We had a lovely time making stools with Ged as a Father’s Day treat for our family. Ged was super patient with the younger family members and we were delighted with our fabulous stools. Thanks Ged
Response from Gedwood:Was a pleasure having you and the family over for the day Mandy 😊👍
We went on a family day with Ged along with another family. We made a mixture of stools and tumblers and the children all enjoyed Ged's patient instruction and information about the tools they were using. T
Highly recommend Gedwood to any adults or families and we will certainly be booking again when we can.
Many thanks Ged.
Response from Gedwood:Many thanks Sarah. Look forward to seeing you and the boys on another course sometime soon😊
I am a complete novice, Ged was patient and course was really interesting. We learned a lot. An enjoyable experience, I am absolutely delighted with my stool and you couldnt ask for a better setting. The time just flew by and the sun shined just for us. I would definitely recommend Gedwood to anyone thinking of working with greenwood - thank you Ged.
Response from Gedwood:Thank you Anita. It was a good day all round re weather and company. Enjoy your stool😊
Great class, we were provided with very nice Japanese carpentry tools. Ged was a damn good teacher, was very easy to follow his directions and he kept track of everyone and offered to help whenever they were struggling. I highly recommend this course also Dufftown where this takes place is a wonderful town with legendary history for the whiskey trail.
Response from Gedwood:Thanks Michael. Glad you enjoyed the course and hope you found time to sample a Speyside dram or two!😊👍
A really enjoyable and interesting day. A great course for beginners, I learned a lot and am really pleased with how my stool turned out. Can't wait to get it sanded and sealed and then start using it!
Response from Gedwood:Thanks Charlotte. Not long now until you can put it to good use!😊
I really enjoyed doing this course. Ged was very friendly and informative and his enthusiasm for green woodworking was inspiring. I felt that I learned a lot from the course and was delighted with the stool that I made.
Response from Gedwood:Thanks Laura. Hope you enjoy making use of your stool 😊
This was my first time doing a woodworking course and I really enjoyed it. My stool was not perfect but it is a stable stool and was made by me! We were given clear instructions and support was given when needed but not too much so I felt confident to get on by myself for a bit until I needed help. There was lots of discussion amongst the group about the tools and wood and Ged was happy to encourage discussion and answer questions. Although we went in October we soon warmed up when we were working and there was sufficient shelter from the rain. It was a friendly, enjoyable day out and we will be looking to visit again.
Response from Gedwood:Thanks Jenny. Hope to see you again sometime soon😊
Very clear instructions and demonstration,. Ged was friendly and helful . And I got a stool at the end.
Response from Gedwood:You did indeed! Thanks Margaret 😊
A fantastic one day course from log to stool. Everything was explained very clearly and Ged was great dealing with questions throughout the day. Fantastic quality tools provided and all materials included. Really enjoyed the process and thanks for being patient with me Ged. 5 stars.
Response from Gedwood:Thankyou and glad you enjoyed the day Jack. Was a great stool you made 👌
Treated to a fabulous day with Ged at his amazing workshop. He taught us how to use a range of woodworking tools & gave a demonstration before we all started our stools. Ged was around for assistance & reassurance if we needed it. All in all a really great day learning new skills in a lovely environment and we are so happy with our wee stools!
Response from Gedwood:Glad you enjoyed the course guys 😊
Had a great day and learnt a lot about how to cut and shape green wood which I had never done before. The instructions are easy to follow and Ged was around to help and guide as needed. A beautiful location to have the workshop too, so a bonus on the surroundings. Will definitely look out for other courses from Ged and will practice the skills I learnt on the day.
Response from Gedwood:Thanks Andrew. Glad you enjoyed the course and hope to see you again on another course😊
The idea of making a piece of furniture starting from scratch with unprocessed greenwood is something quite special in this modern world. Reset, relax and relearn a much forgotten skill that most would have known a century ago. Leave not only with a great piece of furniture but a wealth of knowledge provided by Ged and the skills and confidence to go on and create other things. This was a fantastic course and great value for money. We use the stool every day.
Response from Gedwood:Thanks for your kind words Thomas. And good to know your stool is being put to use!
Did this course with the "Ged Master" last year and my son is now using this stool for his drumming lessons! I realy enjoyed the relaxed environment at Gedwood as much as learning how to make a stool. Enjoyable, informative and a great hand crafted result which is a useful stool. Perfect.
Response from Gedwood:Thanks Thys. Glad your stool is being put to use! 👍
