Set in the stunning rolling hills of Speyside at the very heart of malt whisky country in the scottish highlands.
No previous skills required for this fun and creative workshop, in making a rustic stool from a log to take back with you and proudly display in your home. You will be shown how to cleave, trim and shave the stool legs on the shave horse. Form tenons on the stool legs with a tenon cutter and draw knife. Then shape the slab for the seat of the stool, drill out the leg holes with a hand auger and finally assemble the stool.
An introduction to Ged - Creator and Tutor at Gedwood:
If you're thinking about doing a workshop at Gedwood or buying one of our handcrafted products, we thought it might be handy for you to know a bit more about the teacher and creator!
Ged has been a Countryside ranger for Moray Council for 20 years. He studied forestry at Bangor University and not surprisingly he enjoys being outdoors with nature. Ged first got into green woodworking through renovating his house and garden. He built his own bespoke kitchen from wood and taught himself as he went. He enjoyed it so much he decided he'd like to teach others how to craft beautiful items from natural resources.
Ged's interests include hill walking, bird watching, yoga, conservation, environmental issues and northern soul. He's a very calm and encouraging teacher and an all round great human being!

A really enjoyable and interesting day. A great course for beginners, I learned a lot and am really pleased with how my stool turned out. Can't wait to get it sanded and sealed and then start using it!
Response from Gedwood:Thanks Charlotte. Not long now until you can put it to good use!😊
I really enjoyed doing this course. Ged was very friendly and informative and his enthusiasm for green woodworking was inspiring. I felt that I learned a lot from the course and was delighted with the stool that I made.
Response from Gedwood:Thanks Laura. Hope you enjoy making use of your stool 😊
This was my first time doing a woodworking course and I really enjoyed it. My stool was not perfect but it is a stable stool and was made by me! We were given clear instructions and support was given when needed but not too much so I felt confident to get on by myself for a bit until I needed help. There was lots of discussion amongst the group about the tools and wood and Ged was happy to encourage discussion and answer questions. Although we went in October we soon warmed up when we were working and there was sufficient shelter from the rain. It was a friendly, enjoyable day out and we will be looking to visit again.
Response from Gedwood:Thanks Jenny. Hope to see you again sometime soon😊
Very clear instructions and demonstration,. Ged was friendly and helful . And I got a stool at the end.
Response from Gedwood:You did indeed! Thanks Margaret 😊
A fantastic one day course from log to stool. Everything was explained very clearly and Ged was great dealing with questions throughout the day. Fantastic quality tools provided and all materials included. Really enjoyed the process and thanks for being patient with me Ged. 5 stars.
Response from Gedwood:Thankyou and glad you enjoyed the day Jack. Was a great stool you made 👌
Treated to a fabulous day with Ged at his amazing workshop. He taught us how to use a range of woodworking tools & gave a demonstration before we all started our stools. Ged was around for assistance & reassurance if we needed it. All in all a really great day learning new skills in a lovely environment and we are so happy with our wee stools!
Response from Gedwood:Glad you enjoyed the course guys 😊
Had a great day and learnt a lot about how to cut and shape green wood which I had never done before. The instructions are easy to follow and Ged was around to help and guide as needed. A beautiful location to have the workshop too, so a bonus on the surroundings. Will definitely look out for other courses from Ged and will practice the skills I learnt on the day.
Response from Gedwood:Thanks Andrew. Glad you enjoyed the course and hope to see you again on another course😊
The idea of making a piece of furniture starting from scratch with unprocessed greenwood is something quite special in this modern world. Reset, relax and relearn a much forgotten skill that most would have known a century ago. Leave not only with a great piece of furniture but a wealth of knowledge provided by Ged and the skills and confidence to go on and create other things. This was a fantastic course and great value for money. We use the stool every day.
Response from Gedwood:Thanks for your kind words Thomas. And good to know your stool is being put to use!
Did this course with the "Ged Master" last year and my son is now using this stool for his drumming lessons! I realy enjoyed the relaxed environment at Gedwood as much as learning how to make a stool. Enjoyable, informative and a great hand crafted result which is a useful stool. Perfect.
Response from Gedwood:Thanks Thys. Glad your stool is being put to use! 👍
