Hello, we hope you are all well and safe.
We are delighted to announce we will be back up and running in the summer after the Covid-19 lockdown restrictions have been lifted and hope you will find our workshops a welcome delight after the very difficult times we have all had
Learn the wonderful craft of upholstery (no previous experience needed) by making and upholstering a lovely footstool from scratch in one day to take home with you whilst making some new like minded friends in a relaxed, supportive and beautiful environment.
Come along to one of our one day (10am to 3pm) fun and friendly Upholstery Workshops at the gorgeous Grappenhall Heyes Walled Garden, Warrington, Cheshire. Spend the day in the bright and airy schoolroom and glass house whilst looking out onto the spectacular gardens. On sunny days, we can get outside!
Ideal for complete beginners, or for people who have dabbled in upholstery previously. You will learn the basic skills of upholstery and all about the tools and techniques required so you can continue with your own projects at home.
A small group of no more than 6, therefore you will receive one to one instruction for much of the time.
All you will need to bring is some lovely fabric to cover your footstool. You will be able to choose the style and height of your bun feet and you will paint or wax the bun feet in a colour / shade / style of your choice to complement your fabric.
I will be there every step of the way to guide you and to take you through the process at your pace. With such a small group, there is plenty of time for one to one discussion. Full workshop notes on techniques, tools and materials and where to buy will be provided.
If you have any questions in advance of booking your place please select 'chat with the maker,' if you would like to proceed to booking your place please select 'see available dates.'
I look forward to meeting you and to spending an enjoyable and creative day with you.
Cancellation and a full refund can be obtained up to 2 weeks before the course starts. Start dates may be amended on request.
All tools, legs/feet and materials to make your footstool are provided and are included in the price except bring a 1 metre piece of your favourite fabric to cover your footstool. Should you need any guidance with this, please get in touch.
The price includes lovely homemade cakes, cream scones, biscuits, tea and coffee throughout the day. Lunch is not included in the price, however a delicious afternoon tea or lunch can be enjoyed in the gorgeous adjoining glass house Ape Bars Cafe overlooking the amazing gardens, or please feel free to bring some lunch with you.
Parking is available free of charge within the Walled Garden just outside the School Room.
Please come in comfortable clothing and ideally an apron (not essential). Also comfortable shoes.
We are extremely proud of the lovely reviews we have received from people attending previous workshops. Please take a look in The Boho Shed review section.
Should you choose to join us on this workshop, I look forward to meeting you and sharing a lovely and creative day with you.
This is the Upholstery Workshop. We also run Level 1 Furniture Painting Workshop for beginners/intermediates for those of you who would like to learn some all-round skills. Please see our other 'The Boho Shed' course listings here on the Craft Courses site.

1 day (10:00am to 3:00pm)
I attended the footstool upholstery workshop on Saturday 24th October 2020 at Grappenhall Heys Walled Gardens in South Warrington along with two of my friends. The workshop is held in a potting shed with a kitchen and dining area attached, where you eat your lunch, or you can buy food from the on-site cafe. Tea & coffee is also supplied for you to help yourself to, along with a selection of homemade cakes.
Jo is a very friendly and attentive teacher, nothing is too much trouble. She takes you step by step through the fundamentals of upholstery, giving you the benefit of her knowledge whilst giving top tips on materials and methods. We all brought a one metre piece of material to creat the mini footstool (the cushion is approximately 25 by 30cms). We thoroughly enjoyed the day, and I would highly recommend the workshop to budding upholsterers. Thanks Jo x
Response from The Boho Shed:Thank you so much Lindsey for your kind words. I’m delighted you all enjoyed the day.
I attended the Footstool Upholstery Workshop at Grappenhall Heys Walled Garden on 21st February (2020) along with five other ladies who were totally unknown to me. Joanne was the tutor and took us through the process of creating a footstool from scratch. Helped and guided by Joanne's clear and simple step by step instructions, we all managed to make wonderful little footstools to take home with us at the end of the day.
We got on very well and had lots of fun in the process. It was lovely to see how the fabric we had chosen gave a personality to each of the footstools. They looked amazing and we all felt very proud of ourselves when we viewed the finished items.
The workshop took place in a heated potting shed and was very pleasant, despite the inclement weather that day.
I would thoroughly recommend this workshop and, of course, Joanne, our excellent teacher.
Response from The Boho Shed:What very kind words Diane. Thank you so much. I am so pleased you enjoyed the workshop. The footstools were all really gorgeous. Thank you for contributing to such a great day.
I’ve just completed the upholstery workshop, it was lovely to meet likeminded people and do something you all enjoy, the tutor Joanne was so lovely and very patient allowing you to work at your own pace, she also makes delicious cakes to share with the group, it has given me the skills and confidence to take on a small project myself. I would highly recommend it and will definitely book another workshop soon 😊
Response from The Boho Shed:Thank you so much for your kind words Lynn! It was lovely to meet you. I am really pleased you feel you can now take on your own upholstery projects at home and I look forward to seeing you again soon on one of my furniture painting workshops.
What a fun and Inspiring day I had at Jo’s footstool workshop yesterday along with the other participants. Jo’s straight forward, inclusive teaching manner led to us all leaving thoroughly delighted with our footstool babies and eager to learn more from Jo at one of her other courses. Thanks so much x
Response from The Boho Shed:Thanks so much Mel. You did a lovely job on your footstool. I had such a great day with you all and I look forward to seeing you again for some painting! 💕
Had a fantastic day today learning to make a footstool with Jo from the boho shed. She is a great teacher -very patient and encouraging and worked at a pace to suit all. I have never done any upholstery before, but Jo walked us through the steps and everyone ended up with a beautiful footstool to be proud of. The day was very inspiring and I met some lovely people and was kept fed and watered with plenty of tea and coffee and Jo’s gorgeous cakes. I can’t wait to attend another of Jo’s courses and would thoroughly recommend this to anyone looking for an enjoyable day learning the basics of upholstery -you won’t be disappointed!
Response from The Boho Shed:I had a great day with all of you Sue! You made such a great job of your footstool. Thank you so much for your kind words. Very much appreciated. I look forward to seeing you again.
Had a great day making a footstool. Great to get away from 'work' and doing something with an end result - a fantastic footstool. Joanne is a great teacher - patient, good explanation of tools & how to use them, clear instruction, great laughs & a footstool to be proud off. Thanks Joanne.
Response from The Boho Shed:Thank you for your very kind words Bernie. I’m so pleased you managed to have some time out and enjoyed the day so much.
What a great day! Everything explained so even a novice such as myself could follow how to make the lovely footstool! It was such a beautiful setting to have a workshop with plenty of tea and coffee on tap and even treats! My 2 year old loves 'her' new seat! 😉 x
Response from The Boho Shed:So pleased your little girl approves of her new seat Jenny :-). I agree, Grappenhall Walled Garden is so beautiful. Many thanks for your kind comments.
What a fantastic day, I bought this course for my Mum for her birthday and she said it was the best thing she had ever done and she has done a lot of crafting!! Great day, great company, Jo is so helpful and patient and spends time explaining and making the footstools look amazing ... loved it.

Had a brilliant day with Joanne. Great venue with lots of light and space. The footstool was completed at a nice, comfortable pace with lots and lots of guidance from Joanne. Really enjoyed the footstool course with Jo of the Boho Shed. Jo was really thorough, taking us through how to make them step by step. I feel confident that I could make one at home.
Thank you to Jo for a really good day

Response from The Boho Shed:It was lovely to meet you and your lovely daughter today Maxine. You both did a great job with your gorgeous creations. I'll pass the lovely comments about the cakes to my Mum and Aunty (the bakers!) :-)
What a lovely day. Really enjoyed the footstool upholstery course and came home with a gorgeous footstool. It was a busy but fun day and Jo was a fantastic teacher showing us the techniques as well as letting us try them out for ourselves. Lovely group of fellow upholsters and the scones were gorgeous.
Response from The Boho Shed:Thank you for the lovely review Liz. It's always great to have returning fellow creators.
What a lovely day spent with Joanne and friends. We all made our individual foot stool with our different fabrics, showing just how versatile a foot stool can look. Good banter and clear instructions given by Joanne. Everyone received help as required to complete their foot stool to an excellent standard. Would recommend this course.
Also Joanne’s Mum makes the best scones ever. Would love the recipe!! Many thanks for a great time.
Response from The Boho Shed:Thank you for your kind words Karen. I'm so pleased you enjoyed the day. I have fed back to my Mum about the scones, she's over the moon! I'll get the recipe to you asap :-).
I have just had a great day with Joanne making a foot stool. It was a relaxed and fun way to learn a new skill. Joanne helped us all out and the low numbers on the course meant we could have attention from Joanne to make sure we had a good end product. Add to that her home made cakes and scones, good banter and a new footstool - what a great way to spend a Saturday! Thanks Joanne.
Response from The Boho Shed:Thanks Davina, I'm so pleased you enjoyed the day and enjoyed the cakes :-). What a great bunch.
Fantastic course. Great instruction and a fab quality footstool completes in a day to take with you. As well as the project on the day feel like I learned a lot and am ready to tackle next project. Lunch was fab too!
