About the Course

During this one day indoor workshop you will learn how to carve your own beautiful wooden pendant with the simple and easy to learn knife techniques that Giles has developed. Create your own unique piece of wearable wood art with nothing more than a knife and a little imagination. An infinitely portable and transferable skill set (and toolkit) that will give you the freedom to carve creatively, whether at home or out in the wilderness.

Encompassing the whole process of art woodcarving from sustainable wood selection and design principles to knife work, detailing and finishing you will gain a strong foundation of knowledge and insight into this traditional creative craft; a set of skills that you can easily adapt to carve almost anything. With a strong focus on Giles' principles of working in harmony with, and understanding the characteristics of the wood, participants of this workshop will learn to read the wood and allow its unique features to guide the design and carving process to create truly one-of-a-kind pieces of jewellery from even the most unlikely pieces of wood.

The workshop is suitable for all levels of experience*, from newcomers to carving looking for an introduction to the artform as well as for those with experience of carving by knife already who wish to learn detail and decorative knife work techniques.
(*Participants must be aged 16 or over and under 18s will need to be accompanied by an appropriate parent or guardian)

If booking with a CraftCourses voucher for part or all of the course fee, please fill in the contact form above. Your voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.

What's included in the price?

Knives and wood will be provided as will refreshments of tea and coffee throughout the day. Knives can be bought at the workshop if you wish.

Want to review this course?

Just come back from a course with Giles and I must say it was absolutely fantastic. Giles and his lovely wife make you welcome and at ease from the start. The way Giles engages with you and how he explains the methods he uses are easy to follow. Never having done any wood carving before it was great having someone to encourage you and also taking the time to show you how to solve small mistakes was refreshing.
Thank you so much.
