Spoon carving with Giles Newman

X

Description

Join Giles for a one day woodcarving workshop in his purpose built indoor / outdoor studio space in the Lancashire countryside. Share his sources of inspiration, his tools and his wood in a small carving group of up to only four people. During this workshop you will learn the skills to carve your own beautiful wooden art spoons with the simple and adaptable knife techniques that Giles has developed.

Ideal for both newcomers to woodcarving and experienced woodcarvers, the course focuses on giving you the skills to start and continue a project to create your own unique piece of wood art with nothing more than a knife and a little imagination. An infinitely portable and transferable skill set (and toolkit) that will give you the freedom to carve creatively, whether at home or out in the wilderness.

Encompassing the whole process of art woodcarving from sustainable wood selection and design principles to knife work, detailing and finishing you will gain a strong foundation of knowledge and insight into this traditional creative craft; a set of skills that you can easily adapt to carve almost anything. With a strong focus on Giles' principles of working in harmony with, and understanding the characteristics of the wood, participants of this workshop will learn to read the wood and allow its unique features to guide the design and carving process to create truly one-of-a-kind pieces of wood art from even the most unlikely pieces of wood.

The workshop is suitable for all levels of experience* from newcomers to carving looking for an introduction to the artform as well as for those with experience of carving by knife already who wish to learn detail and decorative knife work techniques. Knives and wood will be provided.

Places on this workshop are limited to 4 to ensure you get the most out of your day.

*Participants must be aged 16 or over and under 18’s will need to be accompanied by an appropriate, paying parent or guardian.

Refunds are not available on this booking. Start dates may be amended on request.

Giles is a natural and provides a warm, welcoming and supportive learning environment. There was a genuine open approach to sharing of experience. I will be definitely be joining Giles again as feel he is a great mentor in supporting my own process in whittling / carving.

Response from Giles Newman:

Thank you so much Miranda. It was such a pleasure to spend the day with you and Melanie and to share knowledge and experience in woodcarving and so much else. I very much look forward to seeing you again in the near future.

Response from Giles Newman:

Wow! I cannot thank you enough for this lovely, very kind and thoughtful review Melanie. It was a real pleasure to meet both you and Miranda and to share my carving techniques with you. I do hope that you will both continue to carve and that it will in some way find a place in your lives along with the other crafts that you do and that you teach. My thanks and best wishes to you both.

A very enjoyable course carving oak leaf pendants under the encouraging and watchful gaze of master woodsmith Giles. A lovely, cosy workshop with welcoming hosts and copious tea…couldn’t ask for more really! Best of all, was the chance to see some of Giles’s amazing work close up - truly inspiring. It was such a relaxing and creative day, I came away with the confidence to start carving another pendant at home. I would highly recommend this course.

Just come back from a course with Giles and I must say it was absolutely fantastic. Giles and his lovely wife make you welcome and at ease from the start. The way Giles engages with you and how he explains the methods he uses are easy to follow. Never having done any wood carving before it was great having someone to encourage you and also taking the time to show you how to solve small mistakes was refreshing.
Thank you so much.
