2 Day Abstract Seascapes Workshop

This workshop is suitable for those of you that have some experience of free-motion machine embroidery and also basic hand embroidery. If you have never tried this technique before I would recommend starting with my ‘Introduction to free motion machine embroidery’ workshop before attempting. Day 1 I will teach you how to put together the background for your abstract coastal piece. The idea is not to create a scene, but a feeling of the coast and the movement of water over-sand. I will show you how to use an embellishing machine to distress and manipulate certain fabrics, and you will then be able to try this yourself. We will finish the day by making some wrapped cords that you can add to your work to represent seaweed-covered ropes. Day 2 You will spend the day adding detail to your piece. There will be a large selection of embellishments available including buttons, beads and coastal finds. I will help you with selection and placement to create balance in your work. Stitchwork will be a combination of free-motion embroidery and hand embroidery. This workshop has been designed to be completed within the two days available. ALL MATERIALS WILL BE PROVIDED The size of your finished piece will be approximately 8” x 8” The piece you create will be designed to have the rough edges on show, and I would recommend getting it to float mounted and framed once it is finished. IMPORTANT...WHAT YOU NEED TO BRING WITH YOU Your sewing machine which you are familiar with using, and can be adapted to free motion sewing by either lowering the feed dogs or attaching a plate that covers them up. I am a Devon based self taught textile artist specialising in free motion machine embroidery. I create contemporary botanical art, landscapes and seascapes, all inspired by the natural world around me. I have chosen not to use fabric dyes or paints in my work so prefer to use up-cycled textiles where possible for their variety and individuality. I am a member of The Embroiderers Guild, The Society For Embroidered Work and the Devon Artist Network
