Felt Lampshades

Description

An opportunity on this two day course to create a unique piece of home decor to complement your home and learn two new skills - Feltmaking and Lampshade Making!

Day One -: Using native breed or merino wools with additional fibres such as silk, linen and exotics like angora you will design and make a piece of felt fabric. You will learn how to lay out the wool and other fibres and apply wet felting techniques to bond the fibres together. At the end of the first half day session you will have a piece of felt fabric which you will go on to make your Lampshade.

Day Two -: Using the felt prepared in the first session you will make your Lampshade. You will learn how to cut your felt fabric to size, adhere a fire resistant backing and shade rings, and gain a basic understanding of how to apply this knowledge to future projects.

No previous experience of felting is required, all abilities welcomed.

Please note: The workshop runs over two consecutive Saturdays (half days) to allow you to make and dry your felt fabric prior to making the lampshade. However, if you would like to book an alternative date please contact me.

Please get in touch for more information via the 'message the tutor' button.

Your tutor will be Emma Jackson, a felt maker with over twenty years experience teaching, designing & making felt for her award winning textiles company, Silversoles. The workshop will take place in her home studio in South Birmingham with a small group of no more than five. Please note: the studio is situated at the bottom of a garden with one step up to access the building.

Cancellation and a full refund can be obtained up to 4 weeks before the course starts. Start dates may be amended on request.

What's included in the price?

All materials and light refreshments of tea, coffee & biscuits are provided as part of the courses alongside handout notes to help you continue to enjoy making your chosen felt projects in the future.

I have wanted to make a felt lampshade for ages so was really delighted when this came up. It really met my expectations and more. Emma is very patient and an excellent teacher. I am so pleased with my lampshade which has had lots of positive comments already. Will be making another one soon.

Response from Emma Jackson (Silversoles - Felted Textiles):

With Emma's patience and expertise, I came away with a rather fabulous lampshade that has pride of place in the bedroom. Her knowledge of natural breeds is vast so can advise on which wool would be most suitable depending on how much light and the pattern you require. Would definitely recommend this course for all felting abilities.

Response from Emma Jackson (Silversoles - Felted Textiles):

Thank you for your feedback Pauline, so pleased you enjoy the workshop and are so happy with your lampshade, it is beautiful.

The felted lampshade workshop was just great. I think Emma is a very good teacher....patient, attentive, helpful and gives clear instructions. The photos she took as we worked will be a useful reminder of the techniques involved. Her enthusiasm for all things felting is infectious and I look forward to attending another felting day in the future. Thanks Emma!

I only attended the second half of the lampshade course but I have been to one of Emma's felting courses before and am booked onto another later this month. She is a very talented felt maker and presents the courses clearly and with a great atmosphere. We were given handouts and photos to remind us of the process. I think the price is very reasonable and the atmosphere is great.

I have loved doing this short course and was amazed with my finished felt lampshade - my friends don't believe I made it! Emma gives you just the right amount of support and step by step instructions throughout - she is a wonderful teacher.
There are lots of beautiful coloured and un-dyed wools to choose from and a mouthwatering selection of fancy fibres and yarns to use too. Working over two days helped me to digest everything, from felt making to making the lampshade, I've learnt so much. The detailed handout instructions given back up anything I forget and will help me have another go. I left so inspired, thank you.

What an excellent experience. I am thrilled with my lampshade. Emma made us feel so welcome and her garden studio is beautiful. She gave us plenty of advice and guided us through each stage of making the felt and constructing the lampshade with patience and skills. I have a limited amount of felt making experience, but this didn't matter as Emma's support, advice and encouragement helped me bring my ideas to life. Thank you Emma - brilliant workshop!

It really is a privilege to be part of a workshop with Emma. This was no exception and benefited from being held over 2 mornings. Although I have previous experience of feltmaking I did not expect to come away with such a stunning piece of art! Emma's teaching is clear, precise and focussed, expertly timed (there is a lot to do!), and she is both highly skilled and exceptionally knowledgeable about her art.Fabulous examples of finished products gave inspiration, excellent workshop environment, detailed handouts, and hands on support all made for inspiring and challenging learning.I am delighted with the outcomes and inspired to continue! Thanks so much.

What a joyful way to spend a Saturday morning (or two in this case!)
Emma hits a perfect balance between teaching - and her practice is excellent - and a lovely informal social session. I learnt new skills and have come away equipped to carry on this amazing craft on my own. Clear, accurate notes were provided and a list of suppliers too! Would definitely recommend! Thanks Emma!
