Description

Creative Mixed Media Textiles - 4 week online course If you want to try some exciting, colourful textile techniques that focus on material exploration, experimenting and having fun - then this is the course for you! Thursday 6th June Thursday 13th June Thursday 20th June Thursday 27th June How the 4 week course works… The workshops are split into four weekly sessions of 1 hour 30 mins each - on a Thursday evening. Each session builds on the last with different textile and mixed media skills in each workshop. It is encouraged to attend each of the 4 Zoom sessions live, but if you cannot attend due to any reason please let Jessica know in advance of the session and you will be sent the workshop recording to follow and watch in your own time. Everyone who signs up to the course will receive the recorded workshops for 1 month following the end of the course along with a corresponding printable PDF worksheet. You will receive your materials pack in the post approx 1-2 weeks before the first workshop starts, alongside joining instructions via email for the Zoom session, as well as a list of other materials that you need to have at home. Please note the materials packs can only be posted to UK participants. Week 1 - Colour/Pattern + Mark-making (Thursday June 6th) To begin our 4 weeks of creative textile exploration we will be looking at mark-making and creating abstract patterns on paper and fabric using paints, resists, inks and crayons. We will explore layering and peeling away techniques and also look at applying similar ideas onto our main fabric base. At the end of the workshop each person will have a mini collection of patterned sheets, and a final piece of painted calico - which will form your base for the remainder of the workshop sessions. Week 2 - Hand stitch + Threads (Thursday June 13th) Week 2 is all about hand stitch techniques and exploring thread ideas. We will use our painted fabric base from week 1 and start experimenting with simple hand embroidery stitches including: Straight Stitch Knots Couching Needle weaving We will look at the potential of each simple stitch and how we can change that by varying the threads that we use as well as the patterns and marks that the stitch makes on our fabric base. Stitching in this way without a pattern is very freeing and relaxing, and great for mindfulness! Week 3 - 2D Embellishments + Layering (Thursday June 20th) Week 3 is all about starting to add embellishments onto our painted and embroidered base in a 2D way, looking a simple shapes, materials and how these can be manipulated to create fun patterns on our fabric. For this session you may want to try out embellishment ideas on another piece of fabric before adding to your painted calico. Embellishment ideas will include: Hand cut sequins Building shapes together Couched beads + unusual embellishments Week 4 - 3D Embellishments + building surfaces (Thursday 27th June) The final week is all about adding to our 2D embellishments to create more 3D ideas with stitching upwards from the fabric base, using structured materials and further material manipulation. 3D embellishment ideas will include: Folded sequins Looped scrolls Embellished embellishments Playing with wire At the end of the 4 weeks you will have your very own unique experimental sampler, documenting all of the ideas and techniques shown in the workshops, you can choose to carry on and add to this in your own time, or use it to develop new textiles and projects.

FAQs

The 4 week course is live every consecutive Thursday evening - starting from the first Thursday in June the dates are:
6th June
13th June
20th June
27th June

Of course! My courses are designed in a way that means all abilities and levels can join - I teach by technique so there is no wrong way to create your textile sample, and joining the live workshops means you have direct access to asking questions for any trouble shooting.

Yes you can! The only difference is that I can only post materials packs in the UK, so you will have to contact the artist to receive a full list of what you need to take part. Jessica is a big believer on reusing and using simple, accessible materials so she is very happy to offer alternative suggestions and help to ensure you have everything you need to enjoy the course.

If you can yes please! However I understand this does not work for everyone, and therefore if you would like to do the workshop in your own time, please purchase the course and contact the artist to let her know you are watching in your own time via the recording.
