Textile landscape workshop in Dorset

X

Description

This course caters for all abilities, from beginners to the more experienced and I offer one to one tuition throughout the day as required.

My landscape courses often use the technique of appliqué - the fabrics being attached by either an electric or hand sewing machine.

You can also opt to use a very simple hand technique using collage and iron-on bonding fabrics if you do not have or do not wish to use a sewing machine.

Over the course of one day, you will learn the techniques of building up a landscape using a variety of fabrics that will give depth and colour to your work.

The workshops take place in my North Dorset studio which offers a safe, light and warm environment with plenty of space to spread out with onsite parking. We are on the ground floor but no wheelchair access unfortunately.

Cancellation and a full refund can be obtained up to 2 weeks before the course starts. Start dates may be amended on request.

What's included in the price?

Please bring a packed lunch or visit the pub next door. All materials, hot and cold drinks and afternoon homemade cake but please bring your own sewing machine (hand or electric) if needed and any special tools you prefer to work with (e.g. scissors, though there will be plenty in the studio.)

All fabrics and materials are provided.

Had a wonderful day with Imogen. Really enjoyed learning and came away with a piece I was very proud of.
Imogen has some amazing pieces of work and I felt honoured to spend the day with such a wonderful artist.
The course was relaxed, informative & fun and gave me some real insight to enable me to do more myself.
Thank you

As a stone mason, this completely different world could have felt completely out of my comfort zone, but not with Imogen at hand! Imogen is the best sort of teacher: available, flexible, encouraging but knowing when to stand back and leave you enough to explore on your own. I absolutely loved it! It was a brilliant, inspiring day, surrounded by Imogen's stunning work, with tea and cake a plenty. I feel confident and excited now, to explore and develop my newly learned techniques, and make my next piece alone. This is a skill and art form which you can do without spending huge amounts on materials and tools, using mostly recycled fabric, easily purchased in charity shops. It was a really rewarding and satisfying experience and I completely recommend it and will be back to do her still life course soon!

Response from Imogen Bittner Studio:

It was wonderful to work with such a positive and talented person, willing to experiment and try new techniques. I am sure you will go on to produce and develop your work and I really look forward to seeing how your own strong individual style translates into textiles in the future, both in landscape and hopefully, still life!

Such an inspirational day - if a little challenging for a novice like me. But Imogen was at hand to encourage and guide me along - thank you so much for a lovely day and for keeping us warm and “watered” in your beautiful studio.

Response from Imogen Bittner Studio:

It was lovely to meet and work with you and I certainly wouldn't describe you as a novice! Your unfamiliarity with the process and subject matter did not stop you producing an interesting and unique piece of work which I look forward to seeing when you have had time to finish it off.
Having an open mind and no preconceived ideas often opens up the way to creativity!

Imogen made us feel very welcome, sharing her knowledge and expertise. I learnt so much In just one session. Her creative skills for textile art are inspiring. I would recommend this day course to anyone, as I’m sure anyone would come away feeling they had learnt many things.

A thoroughly enjoyable day, thank you. Your teaching and encouragement could not have been better. You were so generous in sharing your ideas and instructions very clear. I had not touched a sewing machine for years and set out just to have a fun day, but it has been more than that. I have learned a completely new skill and now feel confident enough to continue to make textile art on my own. I have already raided local charity shops and started a second piece on my own!!

Had a fantastic day at the textile landscape workshop. Excellent tuition & guidance from Imogen & soooo many fabrics to choose from! I managed to achieve so much - started with looking at the landscape to get ideas & ended with having made a great picture using different fabrics, textures etc. Added to all this, Imogen keeps you supplied with tea & cake throughout the day! Fab!

Response from Imogen Bittner Studio:

It was a pleasure to work with you and see your landscape develop during the day. Very confident in every stage, I am sure you will continue to use this technique and I would love to see your future landscapes. So pleased you enjoyed the day!

fabulous day doing the landscape textile class with Imogen in her wonderful craft studio. We walked along to the local mill to soak up the atmosphere and get ideas and then returned to plan our work. It was a lovely, creative, inspirational day. Imogen was generous with her knowledge, fabric and advice. Highly recommended for both beginners and advanced textile artists and sewers.

Response from Imogen Bittner Studio:

From the start and throughout the day, you worked through the stages to produce a striking landscape which reflected your unique vision of the location.
Your choice of colour and texture created an exciting image and your positivity and friendliness added greatly to the atmosphere of the day.

This was a perfect workshop with a small group that took place in Imogen’s delightful studio/workplace. Starting with a short walk to the historic Sturminster Mill to gain inspiration, we spent the day under Imogen’s clear guidance creating our individual stitched pieces. Every step was made clear to us and progression was at our own pace. We were able to select our materials from the wonderful array of fabrics provided - so much to choose from!

I would thoroughly recommend this workshop that caters for both beginners and more experienced stitchers.

Response from Imogen Bittner Studio:

I was very impressed with how your landscape evolved during the day and how you developed the different stages in your own way to produce an atmospheric and unique interpretation of this place. Your positive and cheerful attitude added greatly to a very enjoyable day.

Nothing was too much trouble, Imogen had put a lot of effort into the day not only with the course teaching but she had also made a delicious lunch; two homemade soups and a special vegan one for my daughter. She had even made a cake.
The fabrics were plentiful and we were spoilt for choice. It was an interesting day and we all came away with something completely unique and memorable.
I also had the pleasure of using an old hand machine, much nicer than my electric.
I would definitely recommend this course

Response from Imogen Bittner Studio:

You carefully worked through all the stages, even those that you were not expecting, to produce a lovely piece of work with an interesting perspective. Incorporating a building into the landscape really added to your design and has given me an idea for a future course!
I am so glad you enjoyed the lunch - it gives a welcome break for such hard working students and a time to socialise.
Thank you for coming so far- it was a pleasure to work with you and your daughter.

Imogen ran a perfect workshop. Was very generous with her time, individual tuition, and materials. She provided a super lunch that gave time to relax and discuss work with other students. A truly enjoyable and inspiring day.

Response from Imogen Bittner Studio:

What a beautifully sensitive landscape - your delicate use of colour and texture produced such a successful piece of work.
I always think that a tube of paint does not make a Picasso and so, my pile of fabrics can only be transformed into such an interesting landscape by the intuition and sensitivity of the maker.
Very happy to have helped your inspiration!

Imogen was warmly welcoming, calm, organised, clear and patient in delivering this workshop. She encouraged free use of imagination and experimenting with colours, textures and effects based on initial ideas - of which she provided many. It inspired me to just take the plunge, as did the support and encouragement between all participants - what a great atmosphere and also an opportunity to meet people of like mind.

The lunch was delicious (how did Imogen manage all this?) and gave the added bonus of relaxed conversation - plenty of coffee/tea/biscuits throughout the day too. Ditching my problematic electric machine, the timely loan of a vintage hand-cranked Singer helped to avoid disappointment. I've now cleaned up and learned how to navigate the intricacies of a vintage Singer previously languishing in the shed at home.

Response from Imogen Bittner Studio:

I'm very pleased that you have renovated your old Singer as I personally find them easier to use, as I think you did mine, on the day. I'm even more pleased that you enjoyed the day and want to continue to work in this way. I thought your use of fabric was innovative and your subtle use of colour produced a really delicate and well thought out piece of work.
Your presence on the course added to the very enjoyable atmosphere and I would welcome you back, should you wish to try another.

I really enjoyed this course. Imogen is very talented and an excellent tutor. I learnt a lot of new techniques which I can apply to my own textile projects.

Response from Imogen Bittner Studio:

Lovely work; Karen 's picture reflected the techniques I teach on perspective to give a real depth to her work . Her use of colour really added to this and she created a really striking image.

Imogen was amazing, demonstrating and suggesting techniques to develop my idea for still life all with patience of a saint. Imogen is extremely talented and gifted, but is very supportive to those of us who have limited artistic experience. The day flew by and was immensely satisfying and fun! Thank you for being so kind and supportive it was one of the best days I’ve had this year! Thank you x

This was a truly inspirational one - day textile landscape course . Having dabbled with various aspects of art and crafts, I was looking for something completely different. This course certainly delivered. Imogen has a wealth of experience and skills which she passes on in a friendly informal way. Definitely the kickstart I needed to reboot my enthusiasm. Thanks Imogen I’ll back soon to do the still- life course.
