Take inspiration from the 16th century mill and its peaceful surroundings on the River Stour in North Dorset.
Set in water meadows and surrounded by trees, it has hardly changed since Thomas Hardy, who lived across the fields ,often visited it over 100 years ago.
Working from patterns or your own sketches if preferred, you will be shown the various stages used to build up a landscape incorporating the layering techniques that I have developed and my own techniques of using colour and texture to create depth.
No specific sewing skills are needed for this technique as only a simple running stitch is used.
The courses will be held in my studio (ground floor) with a maximum of 4 participants. We will pause for lunch from 12.30-1pm and light meals such as salads, soup or sandwiches can be obtained from the 17th century deli/ pub which is a few metres away from my studio.
Covid precautions will be taken - spacing the work tables, open windows, anti bacterial gels/ sprays etc. If it is warm, I have a roofed outside space which I also use for workshops.
Cancellation and a full refund can be obtained up to 2 weeks before the course starts. Start dates may be amended on request.
All materials, hot and cold drinks and afternoon homemade cake but please bring your own sewing machine(hand or electric) and scissors.

Nothing was too much trouble, Imogen had put a lot of effort into the day not only with the course teaching but she had also made a delicious lunch; two homemade soups and a special vegan one for my daughter. She had even made a cake.
The fabrics were plentiful and we were spoilt for choice. It was an interesting day and we all came away with something completely unique and memorable.
I also had the pleasure of using an old hand machine, much nicer than my electric.
I would definitely recommend this course
Response from Imogen Bittner Studio:
You carefully worked through all the stages, even those that you were not expecting, to produce a lovely piece of work with an interesting perspective. Incorporating a building into the landscape really added to your design and has given me an idea for a future course! What a fabulous course! Imogen was the perfect hostess and teacher.... Inspiring, helpful, encouraging and engaging. Highly recommend this course to anyone with an interest in art or sewing... no previous experience required and Imogen provided everything we needed!
Response from Imogen Bittner Studio:
Thank you very much - it is as interesting for me, meeting such motivated and talented people who understand the processes and take them further to make such individual work.I wish you a lot of fun and future enjoyment and thank you again for making the course so relaxed and enjoyable.Imogen ran a perfect workshop. Was very generous with her time, individual tuition, and materials. She provided a super lunch that gave time to relax and discuss work with other students. A truly enjoyable and inspiring day.
Response from Imogen Bittner Studio:
What a beautifully sensitive landscape - your delicate use of colour and texture produced such a successful piece of work.An excellent tutor in Imogen Bittner. Very well prepared and very generous with her fabrics etc,
Response from Imogen Bittner Studio:
A real pleasure to share my fabrics with you Mary and see you transform them into such a vibrant landscape.Imogen was warmly welcoming, calm, organised, clear and patient in delivering this workshop. She encouraged free use of imagination and experimenting with colours, textures and effects based on initial ideas - of which she provided many. It inspired me to just take the plunge, as did the support and encouragement between all participants - what a great atmosphere and also an opportunity to meet people of like mind.
The lunch was delicious (how did Imogen manage all this?) and gave the added bonus of relaxed conversation - plenty of coffee/tea/biscuits throughout the day too. Ditching my problematic electric machine, the timely loan of a vintage hand-cranked Singer helped to avoid disappointment. I've now cleaned up and learned how to navigate the intricacies of a vintage Singer previously languishing in the shed at home.
Response from Imogen Bittner Studio:
I'm very pleased that you have renovated your old Singer as I personally find them easier to use, as I think you did mine, on the day. I'm even more pleased that you enjoyed the day and want to continue to work in this way. I thought your use of fabric was innovative and your subtle use of colour produced a really delicate and well thought out piece of work.I really enjoyed this course. Imogen is very talented and an excellent tutor. I learnt a lot of new techniques which I can apply to my own textile projects.
Response from Imogen Bittner Studio:
Lovely work; Karen 's picture reflected the techniques I teach on perspective to give a real depth to her work . Her use of colour really added to this and she created a really striking image.Imogen was amazing, demonstrating and suggesting techniques to develop my idea for still life all with patience of a saint. Imogen is extremely talented and gifted, but is very supportive to those of us who have limited artistic experience. The day flew by and was immensely satisfying and fun! Thank you for being so kind and supportive it was one of the best days I’ve had this year! Thank you x
I highly recommend this lovely course, it was a really wonderful, inspiring and rejuvenating day. We learnt about creating a unique picture using beautiful materials. Imogen is talented, generous and patient. She is friendly, informal and creative. We feel very lucky to have found her and are looking forward to coming down to Dorset for another workshop with her before very long. Thank you for a lovely, lovely day, Lesley
I loved the textile Landscape course. I learnt a lot of new skills and came away with an abundance of inspiration. Imogen guides you patiently through the techniques but allows you to develop your own style. The whole day was a treat and the lunch was delicious too.

Thouroughly enjoyed this workshop, having learned a plethora of new skills to try at home. So many lovely materials to wade through ! Not to mention the very tasty lunch and cups of tea.
Imogen is a very patient and talented artist who was keen to allow us to make our creations - thank you.
Imogen’s landscape workshop was inspiring. She is patient, generous and there if you need guidance and instruction. If you want to just get on with it, she allows you the space to do just that.
This was a truly inspirational one - day textile landscape course . Having dabbled with various aspects of art and crafts, I was looking for something completely different. This course certainly delivered. Imogen has a wealth of experience and skills which she passes on in a friendly informal way. Definitely the kickstart I needed to reboot my enthusiasm. Thanks Imogen I’ll back soon to do the still- life course.
