Introduction to Inkle Loom Weaving Workshop, Salisbury
Description
A day-long inkle weaving workshop for beginners between 10am - 4pm in the beautiful setting of Fisherton Mill in Salisbury, Wiltshire. Inkle looms are used to produce woven bands that can be used as bag straps, guitar straps, shoe laces, hat bands and decorative trim, just to name a few! WHAT TO EXPECT The workshop will teach you the basic principles and terminology of weaving on an inkle loom, and you will weave a band. We will cover the following: - How to pick the best yarns for weaving. - How to plan your warp (all the tension threads that are wound on to the loom before weaving begins). - How to dress the loom (prepare the loom for weaving). - Lots of weaving! - How to secure your band and remove it from the loom. We start by learning about the best yarns to use and how to plan and record your warp (all the tension threads that are wound on to the loom before weaving begins) before dressing the loom (preparing the loom for weaving), followed by lots of weaving! Spaces are limited to ensure you receive as much guidance as you need. This workshop is suitable for complete beginners and those that have a little experience and would like a refresher. You will have the opportunity to buy a loom at the the end of the workshop and you will find a comprehensive list of suppliers in the resources section of your handout. WHAT TO BRING If you have a use for your weaving in mind, like a band for your favourite hat for example, you may wish to bring the hat along so that you can colour match. Fisherton Mill has a wonderful cafe where you can purchase your lunch, cakes and drinks, however if you'd prefer to bring a packed lunch, please feel free to do so. This is a wonderful and practical style of weaving that can be easily grasped in a day. The looms are small, light weight and portable, making them a great choice for taking away on trips, moving around the house, or tucking out of the way.

Maker
ELKA is a weaving and natural dye studio based in Hampshire. Ellie spent a large part of her childhood living abroad and travelling. The vibrant markets of the Middle and Far East triggered her passion for colour, texture and pattern and this influence is expressed through her textiles. She completed both her BA in Textile Design, specialising in woven textiles, and MA in Design for Textile Futures at Central St Martins College of Art and Design, graduating in 2006. After graduating, she moved back to Winchester to set up her weaving business which she has been running full time since 2015. In 2018 Claudia (Ellie's mum) started working with the business to produce naturally dyed yarns for Ellie to weave with, and to sell on our website. If you are too far afield to join us on an in-person workshop, we have a growing range of online self-paced courses which have been designed to get you confidently weaving and natural dyeing from you home.
