Join us in our inspirational thatched Long Barn, on the edge of the South Downs Way in the beautiful Meon Valley and explore the technique of batik.
Batik is an ancient process that originated in Indonesia. Pattern is traditionally applied onto cloth using molten wax with fine brushes or tools called tjantings, before coloured dyes are applied to the fabric.
In more recent years this highly decorative and colourful process has been used to create designs and images on fabric as well as paper.
Explore this vibrant process, creating a range of experimental samples and unique outcomes, on fabric . You may choose to work with the themes of florals or abstract pattern, or take inspiration from different cultural images; alternatively you may wish to develop designs of your own choosing.
This workshop is suitable for those with a range of skills and creative experiences.
The workshop will be delivered by Alison Butler of Blooming Designs. With over 25 years experience as a textile designer and book illustrator, Alison will guide you through a range of exciting approaches, where there will be few, if any, rules.
Please bring along: an apron, ideas/drawings/images related to the themes of florals, abstract and cultures - optional, a newspaper and an A3 folder to transport your work home and a pencil case.
This is a light spacious venue which allows you to be socially distanced from the other participants and you will have your own tools to work with.
COVID-19: Depending on government requirements in October, all appropriate social distancing measures will be in place.
Cancellation and a full refund can be obtained up to 2 weeks before the course starts. Start dates may be amended on request.
The workshop will run from 10 - 4pm, with places limited to 10, including: tuition, all materials and use of equipment.
Drinks and refreshments will be available throughout the day; just bring your lunch.
Please contact Alison Butler if you have any questions, wish to book your place or discuss accommodation on the farm.

This was my second workshop at Art in The Barn, previously did Gelli Plate mono printing and this time Batik on Paper. Absolutely LOVED the entire day, learning a new skill, taught at a perfect level, brisk and with plenty of individual attention and even extra time at the end to finish my main piece. ( time just flies, when you’re having a great time!). The venue was lovely to work in, with the Covid regulations in place. Highly recommended.
Response from Blooming Designs - Art in the Barn:Dear Sonhild,
This was my second craft course with Alison and Liz at Art in the Barn. It was equally as good as the lino cutting course I had previously done. Alison and Liz are very good hosts who quickly put you at ease while they show you the various techniques. There is no pressure to finish anything at a set time but they do show you the next step you might take as the day goes on. There is no pushing you out of the door at the end of the day either, but you are made welcome to stay and finish your final piece. Would thoroughly recommend.
Response from Blooming Designs - Art in the Barn:Dear Judith ,
Fantastic day! I had so much fun learning the techniques and trying new things. It was great to come away with a few pieces. The venue was brilliant and the tuition very clear and helpful. Highly recommend- thank you!
Response from Blooming Designs - Art in the Barn:Hi Charlotte,
What an amazing class. I’m still glowing from it. Alison is wonderful and takes the class at a good pace. Learned so much and I’m inspired to take it up at home. The Art Barn is a fab venue.
Response from Blooming Designs - Art in the Barn:Dear Wendy,
The gradual build up of the layers in preparation for a final picture, helped me to understand the processes and see the possibilities. A real learning experience with such enjoyment.
Thanks for a delightful day. I would strongly recommend doing this course.
Response from Blooming Designs - Art in the Barn:Hi Mary,
Really enjoyed my day of learning a new skill, it was taught at a good pace and lots of opportunities to ask questions and seek advice . The venue was so lovely to work in and I felt very safe with the Covid guidelines in place . I came away feeling I had achieved something beautiful and the time flew by. Excellent day.
Response from Blooming Designs - Art in the Barn:Dear Mandy,
Excellent setting for an excellent course! It’s been years since I I dabbled in the arts and crafts world. My sister and I went along to this course and Alison and Liz immediately put us at ease. The course content and explanation of steps was expertly done and I felt confident I could try and produce something incorporating my ideas. At the end of the day I had delivered three pieces of Batik on paper which are now proudly in frames hanging in our hallway. I have been bitten by the Batik bug! I would recommend this course to anybody wanting to try something new! Absolutely brilliant.
Response from Blooming Designs - Art in the Barn:Hi Rachel ,
A fun and engaging day out!
Found out about different techniques with batik and left wanting to do more.
Response from Blooming Designs - Art in the Barn:Hi Joanna ,
Alison teaches Batik very well, small steps at first and then tailoring the class to the individual needs. My partner created an amazing piece which hangs today in our living room, a reminder of a fun day out! I would definitely recommend this course to anyone wanting an intro to Batik or even to further develop their skills
Three of us attended the workshop which felt like it was tailor made to us. We all felt extremely welcomed and really enjoyed the whole experience. Alison was great at guiding us through the whole process and it was great to come away with a final finished piece- we all felt like we had acheived something! Thank you Alison.
Response from Blooming Designs - Art in the Barn:Dear Louise,
I booked "Beautiful Batik" with my partner as a birthday present for him, and a date for us. We had no prior experience of this type of art. It was an amazing treat. Alison's studio is on a beautiful family farm. We got a very warm welcome and were made to feel really comfortable and welcome for the day. We were surrounded by inspiring examples of Batik that Alison had made over the course of her design career. The colour and variety was amazing. We spent the day learning techniques at our own pace and being encouraged to try new ideas and ways of working with the colours to gain different effects. We left with some beautiful, colourful and fun samples of our own. This was a bespoke and wonderful experience. Thank you Alison.
Response from Blooming Designs - Art in the Barn:Dear Nicky,
Another terrific course at Art in the Barn! Beautiful surroundings and great space to work. Alison is very experienced in many specialist design and craft areas. Batik on paper was a whole new process for me. Really enjoyed experimenting and learning how to use this technique and new tools in several different parts of the session. Incredible colours and effects! Thoroughly enjoyed the day and would highly recommend this course and many others run at Art in the Barn.
Response from Blooming Designs - Art in the Barn:Dear Kim,
Really enjoyable class, with the opportunity to learn something new from scratch, and actually produce some not bad pieces to take home. Excellent teacher, lovely venue - highly recommended.
Response from Blooming Designs - Art in the Barn:Dear Toni,
This was my first introduction to Batik. I found the initial working with the wax quite taxing. I enjoyed planning the initial designs and then applying the wax. Clear guidance was readily given at every stage. My final design did not turn out as I'd hoped but lots of suggestions and encouragement as to how to proceed was given. I loved the use of colour.
It was a very attractive environment to work in. The tutors had a very relaxed but efficient and effective approach to their teaching. It is certainly something I would like to pursue further.
Response from Blooming Designs - Art in the Barn:Dear Marion,
A lovely day in a fabulous setting; a thatched barn beats a church or village hall hands down.
Having some experience with the Batik process was an advantage, but Alison had so much more to teach us. She was patient and supportive, allowing us time to play and think through our ideas, but never far away when a bit more information and advice was needed.
Alison also had some fabulous examples of her Batik work to inspire us, from when she was designing for fashion and children’s wear - somehow I don’t think I will ever create work to such a standard, but I spent a really enjoyable day trying too.
Response from Blooming Designs - Art in the Barn:Dear Liz,
