At Ecclesall Woods we pride ourselves on the high-quality teaching from our tutors and our low class numbers (max 6 for most classes) and a number of our courses also have an assistant.
We have found that smaller class sizes are more productive, un-rushed and allow students to learn more

I thought the day and the tips given by Dave was excellent. I have made at least 11 sticks so far and I'm a bit of a stick nerd. Thanks for an informative day, very relaxed style. Would recommend it to anyone. Bill Knapp
A thoroughly enjoyable day. I've been wanting to start stick making for some time and feel I have all
the know-how now to get going. Great instructors and a nice bunch of folk participating. Very pleased with my first stick as well. Highly recommended.
A really enjoyable day. Great instructor, nice pace, learnt new skills. Would recommend to others to give it a go. Met some nice people.
Very inspiring day and thanks to all the team who delivered the course.
A great day all round with a good group of people and came away with a nice stick too.
Would highly recommend.
I have never worked with wood before but really enjoyed the day as Dave was an excellent tutor and the volunteers were very helpful. Came away with my own personal walking stick that I made. I also used power and traditional tools that I’d never touched before and that was a great learning experience in itself. The event location was brilliant and I am wanting to book on some other courses now that I’ve had that introduction. I enjoyed meeting the other course students and had a pleasant day. You can’t get the experience that we received on the day from reading books and watching YouTube.
I did this course 25th July it was great, I have never done anything like this before . I was a bit daunted when I started and worried I would mess it up. But there was so much help available from the staff . Also it was so hot, but we were constantly reminded to drink plenty. Even if you have never picked up a carving knife, or made a stick give it a go, it is well worth it. You will come away with a stick you can be proud of.
I just hope my son will like it too.
Excellent day. Helpful, informative and friendly tutor and volunteers and some lovely, like-minded fellow students. Overall, relaxing, creative and therapeutic. Many thanks.
Attended the course on the 6th June, lucky enough to have a great bunch of like minded course members from all walks of life. Dave and his team were very out going and shared all manner of tips. Came away with a renewed vigour to carry on with the knowledge gained from this course, may well attend other courses at this facility, keep up the good work.
From the first minute the good humour and the banter encouraged by Dave gave promise of a good day ahead. Most of the eight attendees were in the same boat, not having made a stick before. We needn't have worried. Dave quickly put us at our ease and under his expert guidance we were soon all on our way to the end result of a simple stick. Lunchtime arrived all too quickly and I still had three bits of a stick but progress from there was rapid and by the end of the afternoon I came away with a completed thumbstick.
Tea, coffee and biscuits were plentiful. Parking was easy even for "Lollo" my much travelled motorhome and all the staff and volunteers were friendly and helpful. I was reluctant to leave at the end of the day.
Really enjoyed this course.
Relaxed atmosphere and supportive staff made this a very enjoyable day.
Relaxed style of learning promoted by Dave. Excellent. The joints we made are not traditional but pegged with steel pin. I was happy with this as my skills, I am sure, wouldn't have run to making pegs/dowels etc. I messed up with stick straightening but Dave rescued me by giving me a spare. Instruction and examples were very clear. Dave did some of this himself eg drilling holes for the pins. It is good that we left with a finished stick and a choice of what t o do if we want to do more work on it. Lovely location and workspace - plus emergency room if we needed to shelter.
Tea/coffee and biscuits available all day - excellent. I enjoyed the day and didn't find it too challenging ( which I was happy about as really I am a bit of a bodger! )
We spent a very interesting and instructive day. Our knowledgeable instructor was very relaxed and helped all course members who had mixed levels of ability. The day passed quickly and I learned a lot .
Thanks for a great day.
A very enjoyable course . Would recommend excellent tutor
A really super day. I have made very simple stick in the past, this course has spurred me on to make better sticks. As with many things personal guidance is a million times better than a book [or even You Tube videos].
Dave has a very easy style of teaching. You are guaranteed to enjoy the day
Dave and the Team were most informative with the pace of instruction just right, interspersed with priceless Top Tips on how to make that little difference in making a walking stick that is yours. In addition to the expert tuition based on years of experience Dave readily shared his passion and subject matter expertise for the right tools for the job, of which he has a fair few, some adapted for the purpose. I came away motivated to get the garage cleared out, the workbench set up and stick making underway using the additional materials purchased on the course. My thanks to Dave and the Team for a most informative, enjoyable and productive day and to my wife Sally for purchasing the course for me as a Xmas gift. Dave a warm welcome awaits in Hampshire.
Enjoyed every second of this course, it was so informative, the tutor helpful, the time just flew away. Thank you so much for a wonderful day.
A thoroughly enjoyable and educational day. So much information presented with a calm relaxed approach and all course members treated in a very professional and inclusive manner. The day went by a flash and yet we all came out with our completed masterpieces! It has certainly wetted my appetite and I can see myself continuing to practice the skills gained today (should my retirement from work ever happen!!)
