Learn how to upholster using the traditional method of hand-built stuffing and stitching, and building modern furniture with foam and wadding. With guidance you will develop a sense for the correct tension of the fabric, and the feel of the furniture. These key points will help you to achieve the professional appearance needed for your work. And of course - most chairs need a cushion! So learn to make templates, piping, insert zips and button hole making...

Jo has been invaluable in improving my sketchy knowledge of traditional upholstery. Her teaching approach is hands on with a thorough explanation of each stage, and I have learnt so much in the three weeks I have been attending her drop in classes. I can't wait to get back to continue my learning experience...
I have been attending the Tuesday drop in class for 6 months now and in that time I have
re-upholstered 6 dining chairs, 2 footstools and I am currently attempting a challenging large Victorian chair. All this has only been possible because Jo is a brilliant tutor she gives you not only the skills to achieve so much in class but also the confidence to continue your project at home, she explains the how & why and doesn't make you feel a complete twit if you don't immediately grasp what she is telling you! I feel proud of what I have achieved with Jo's help and now I find I am constantly on the look out for tired, worn out pieces of furniture to 'beautify'. Thank You Jo
I started the Tuesday morning classes a couple of months ago with quite a difficult chair for a total beginner! But I can honestly say I have enjoyed every second. Jo makes you feel very relaxed therefore you enjoy yourself. The 3 hours felt like 3 mins. The concentration is something I have always found hard but finally in my old age, I can do it!! I am very proud of myself but I could not have achieved a difficult chair and foot stool (so far) without Jo. I wish she had been my teacher when I was little then I would have gone far! She is a brilliant teacher.
2 day weekend upholstery workshop in York with Jo Walton. What a weekend! Lots of one to one tuition from Jo who is a very skilled craftswoman. I learned so much and got far more from the course than I ever expected to. I now have the confidence and some of the skills to start work on further projects. I would recommend this course to anyone thinking of renovating a piece of furniture. Thanks so much for your time skills and patience Jo.
Brilliant traditional upholstery weekend in a sunny, well equipped studio. Small group size so plenty of one to one tuition & support from Jo Walton of the Urban Chair Company. Being surrounded by the incredible pieces she's created was inspirational. As was the camaraderie within the group. Jo has the skills of a master crafts woman, & the patience of a saint. Loved it! Thank you :)
