About the Course

Angie aims on this 4 day course to introduce new students to the wonderful occupations of either upholstery, soft furnishings or loose covers, in a happy balance between learning and enjoyment, so that you can go home and transform your homes. She has been teaching for nearly 16 years from her home just outside Matlock on the edge of the peak District.

There are 3 students on this 4 day course. The small student numbers mean that I can provide one to one tuition and a lot can therefore be achieved on the full length (9-5) days. You also have the opportunity to work late after I finish teaching on all days except Mondays.

We try hard to find a balance between learning a new skill and having an enjoyable time. While we work away in the workshop - old pub darts room, Carl works downstairs preparing us delicious lunches (and dinners, if you are staying) downstairs.

Some suggestions as to suitable projects are as follows:

Upholstery - a fireside, winged armchair, bedroom chair, dining chairs, headboard, footstool (small to very large and we can provide frames at additional cost), box cushions are some suggestions. projects can be traditional or modern. It is often a good idea to bring a variety of smaller projects that one huge one. However, if you have a much loved piece of furniture that is all you want to upholster then that is fine , just be prepared that you may well not complete it! Contact Angie if you are unsure whether your project is suitable.

Soft furnishings - lined and interlined curtains, one or more roman blinds, scatter or box cushions, pelmets, bedspreads and valances etc.

Loose covers - you should manage to complete a cover for an arm chair in the 4 days but it is important that you have good sewing skills to undertake these.

If booking with a CraftCourses voucher for part or all of the course fee, please fill in the contact form above. Your voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.

What's included in the price?

Lunch, tea, coffee, homemade cakes and biscuits are included in the course fee. We can cater for most, but not all, dietary requirements. There is accommodation available if you do not live within daily commuting distance. Please look at the website for details

You need to bring sufficient covering fabric for your projects but other upholstery and soft furnishing sundries can be purchased form our stock and must be paid for at the end of the course. You are welcome to bring your own materials if you have them. Traditional upholstery materials are expensive so please be prepared for this. If you are in doubt please contact Angie.

Just wanted to say a big thank you for last weekend. I was really looking forward to this upholstery course, but I have to say it exceeded all my expectations, I love your enthusiasm for the subject and how you teach, in particular how you stop whatever we are doing to come over and get us to observe when someone else reaches an important stage in their project.
The accommodation and food package was also just what I needed, it was like home from home and enabled me to forget about everything else and concentrate on my project for the weekend. Thank you Carl for all the wonderful meals, you both make a great team and I hope to see you again in the future. Pam

This is a great course led by a hugely experienced and gifted teacher in Angie. Very instructive and a lot of fun. With just three of us on the course, you got a lot of individual tuition but Angie let's you get on with the work yourself so you really do learn through experience, whilst always being on hand to answer questions or give you guidance when required. You are in the heart of beautiful countryside in a warm, light workroom and will fellow stitchers, the conversation is wide-ranging. Angie's husband Carl does the cooking and the lunches are a real treat with home-made bread and ingredients from the kitchen garden. I thoroughly recommend this course - I am really pleased with the outcome of my loose cover and feel very confident of having been taught well enough to tackle the next one on my own.

I can not recommend this course enough, Angie is so knowledgable and guides you through the process of creating something wonderful and unique. My friends and family are so impressed with the chair I reupholstered and I feel I have the skills to start to tackle something on my own. Oh and lunch is absolutely delicious! I’m keen to go back and learn about soft furnishings too.

Excellent weekend, made to feel welcome from the moment I walked through the door. Angie is an inspiring tutor and imparts many years of knowledge and tips to help with chosen upholstery project. The accommodation and food were fantastic and the whole weekend felt like a retreat. Would definitely recommend.

I cannot recommend this course enough! As a keen basic sewer, I'd always wanted to try upholstery. This course felt like a mini retreat, from the moment I arrived I was made to feel completely at ease and welcomed into Angie's fabulous home. Angie's enthusiasm and and joy she brings to teaching and all things upholstery knows no bounds. I stayed at the house and enjoyed the most delicious breakfast, lunch and dinner in fabulous company (only available for the 4 days course) which again added to the whole wonderful experience. With only 3 individuals on the course, the teaching was near one to one and tailored to each of us. I learnt so much, not only from my project, but from also from my fellow course mates. Angie also went that extra mile to help me make up a "mock" box cushion for a future project. An utter joy, thank you.

Having done a basic loose cover course I really wanted further teaching to help me feel more confident dealing with different style chairs and fabrics.
Angie’s course was fantastic. She showed me how to make a loose cover in 2d fabric on a winged armchair and also how to make a loose cover for a small sofa using the existing cover as a template. I also learnt how to make box cushions properly and was able to use her industrial sewing machines in her workshop.
Lunch was all homemade and organic with both a vegetarian and vegan option. We were also kept well fed throughout the day with homemade cakes.
I highly recommend this course to anyone wanting to learn or extend their knowledge in upholstery and loose covers.

I have had the pleasure of spending three glorious weekends in the company of Angie, amidst her endless knowledge on both traditional and modern upholstery and soft furnishings. My first project (an Edwardian winged-back chair) was by no means modest and I knew just by speaking to Angie it would be completed in the traditional way that I wanted. I am so happy with the result! The workshop is set in the most beautiful surroundings and very easy to reach from Matlock Town. On the 4 day course we were offered lunch which consisted of locally sourced and homegrown produce and it was food to die for. I haven't quite finished with Peak Upholstery yet so I will be returning very soon with another project. Which ever course you decide to do it will be full of laughter, learning and a weekend you won't want to end!

This weekend course is an absolute delight. Angie is a fabulous hostess, aided brilliantly in the background by her husband. The workshop is very well equipped and Angie has a vast amount of experience to help with any project. She is particularly enthusiastic about traditional techniques - used to great effect on old pieces of furniture. lunch is included on this course and was absolutely delicious and different every day. Angie will also tempt you with smashing home made cakes and coffee or tea in between times! I’ve been on 3 courses so far and I’m going back very soon! Thorough recommend this course- you’ll love it!
