Round Frame Baskets with Salix Arts at Cambridge Art Makers

X

Description

Learn how to make lovely round frame baskets from locally grown organic willow.

Using straightforward age-old basketry techniques, Debbie will guide you through the process of making these most rustic of baskets, which were traditionally made at home by the layman rather than professional basket makers.

Frame baskets are ideal for gathering and storing eggs, picking soft fruit, and can be used for all sorts of things!

During this day-long course, you will learn to make your own hoops and frame from sturdy willow, attach them together with the ‘God’s Eye’ technique, and infill with finer rods.

Most people can expect to complete a small round basket in a day, but if you tend towards the slow and careful be reassured that even if you don’t finish on the day, you will go home with all the skills and materials needed to complete your basket.

All materials and tools will be provided, but do feel free to bring your own secateurs or basketry tools if you have them. Please remember a packed lunch and refreshments.

Whilst basketmaking is not a particularly grubby activity, sometimes dirt can rub off the willow on to clothes. I recommend wearing clothes that are not too precious and do not have a loose weave (the tiny buds on the willow have a tendency to snag loose weave jumpers). Please also wear closed toe shoes. Layers would be good, as if the weather is good, we may be able to spend some of the day outside.

Cancellation and a full refund can be obtained up to 4 weeks before the course starts. Start dates may be amended on request.

I hadn't done any painting since my school days (a long time ago!) and was pretty terrified but Janet walked everything through with such patience and encouragement I was able to get over my insecurities and paint a picture I was proud of! Everyone in the class I was in, had different insecurities but by the end everyone had painted a beautiful picture and felt confident that they could continue to grow! Her experience in painting flowers 'in the flesh' is well demonstrated and she knows how to bring out the delightful characters of every species; even the most tricky of characters! Her techniques for composition are genius!

Jill is a wonderful teacher with years of experience of glass art and teaching under her belt. Having never done anything like this before I was able to produce beautiful pieces in just a few short hours! The space at Cambridge Makers is also really lovely and welcoming and has excellent facilities.
