This workshop introduces you to creating and making large scale willow sculpture that we work on together.
The session starts with an informal introduction and safety awareness of the space. We will look at willow in its dry and wet state and begin to handle and learn techniques to manipulate it. The work will progress through the session, immersing you into the wonderful rhythm of weaving. At Creative nature HQ, we differ from other courses in that we create the artwork to be donated to community groups and schools. So you take home memories and new skills.
For an extra £30, there is an option to develop your own work or an individual project and take this home with you, for instance a willow animal. This can be decided and paid for on the day with cash or card.
Your tutor, Stephen, has been working with willow for over 30 years and trained as a sculptor and forest school teacher.
If you will be redeeming a CraftCourses gift voucher on this course, the voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.
All materials and tools for the day are included. Do wear work wear and bring an apron if you have one. Tea, coffee and biscuits are available all through the session and there are many places to have lunch within a five minute walk (if you are taking part in a daytime workshop). We have a great cafe on site with views over the river Thames.
Plenty of free parking, along with local transport links.
To find us, come through the main gates at Thames-side-studios and Creative nature HQ is situated on your right just after the security hut, unit TW-008.
Please arrive about 15 minutes before the start of the class.

In July I signed up as a complete beginner. On arrival I was greeted by Stephen the friendly instructor. After explaining the course we set about constructing a four legged animal. I found the whole experience so informative and relaxing. Being totally engrossed in the whole process. Stephen's knowledge was endless and entertaining. We worked together and produced a wonderful piece. Since then I have made another two animals and several other pieces. At the grand age of 78 I have found a great pastime. This is a course for all ages. Thanks
I attended the willow weaving workshop on Saturday afternoon. It was amazing really hands on with informative direction from the amazingly talented Stephen, resulting in me taking home a personal piece of willow sculpture. The workshop is inspiring, relaxing and a great place to let your imagination run wild. I'll definitely be booking a full day very soon.
This course was wonderful.
Stephen is an exceptionally talented, warm and open guy. You cannot come away without being creatively inspired. He gives you helpful direction and also allows you space to experiment.
He guided us through a communal project together (we built a willow den) before sending us off to work on our own projects. I made a lovely sphere garden sculpture. It’s a good idea to research what you might like to make beforehand (Pinterest is helpful) and send any pictures to Stephen in advance so that he can prepare.
A great experience. If he was based near to where I live (in West London), then I would go for an inspirational “fix” every week.
A wonderfully inspiring and thoroughly enjoyable day! We all worked together on a sculpture in the morning which, apart from being good fun, was an excellent way to introduce us to each other and to the different types of willow. In the afternoon we concentrated on personal projects. Stephen was extremely generous, encouraging, patient and helpful. His knowledge is extensive and invaluable. I learnt a tremendous amount and look forward to learning more; in fact, the only problem I can foresee, is that willow weaving could become addictive!
Amazing workshop. Stephen was so friendly and helpful and I think its the best course I have done! Really enjoyed working with a new material and making my designs come to life. I would recommend it to everyone. Thank you
This was a great experience. I worked with a group of strangers who, over the course of the day became my friends and at the same time we created a willow sculpture which surpassed all my expectations. Working collectively to create a thing of beauty lifted my spirits and gave me new ideas and skills to take home with me. I have great plans for the garden this summer. Stephen, the teacher was quite inspirational and we had tea and cake. What's not to like!
