Willow Weaving: Sculptural Hare Workshop
Description
Bring a lively willow hare to life in this immersive sculptural workshop with Chaz Friend. You’ll begin by forming a framework of hoops and ribs, creating a strong scaffold that becomes the hare’s body. As you learn to direct, curve, and bind the willow, your sculpture develops personality and posture. Once the legs are added, your hare will stand independently, ready to inhabit your garden or home. The expressive ears are constructed with a secure internal frame before being woven with a delicate criss-cross lattice. This is an inspiring introduction to building three-dimensional forms in willow — expressive, creative, and immensely satisfying. Chaz Friend is the willow artist behind Wayside Willow, sharing the craft of willow weaving with schools, community groups and adults across the Midlands and beyond. After 24 years as a primary teacher, Chaz followed his passion for heritage crafts and has been teaching willow weaving since 2014. Friendly, patient and endlessly enthusiastic about the possibilities of willow, Chaz brings warmth, humour and deep knowledge to every workshop. The course will take place in our Heritage Craft Barn at Stanwick Lakes, a beautiful 750-acre nature reserve and visitor attraction in the heart of Northamptonshire’s Nene Valley.
