Introduction to Nordic woodcraft If you have no wood carving experience then this is the course for you. On this course you will learn all the basics needed so you will be comfortable making making carving basic wooden items at home. What you will learn What is green woodworking and why do it Timber selection (do’s and don’ts) How to dry your wood without it splitting Different protective finishes for your items About the tools How to use a hand saw How to use a carving axe for shaping How to use a carving knife 2. Spoon carving Spoon carving is the stereotypical Nordic woodcraft project people get stuck into and for good reason. It is easy to pick up the basics but can take many years to master, so you can see constant improvement and keeping your interest for many years. Everybody needs wooden spoons in their kitchen so they make great gifts. The other benefit of starting with spoons is that you only need much small pieces of wood (twigs and branches) to get making. Compared to cup making where you need access to large diameters of timber. This course is ideally suited to people with at least a little practical hands on experience of any sort even if that is not wood related. Highlands cup or whisky quaich Learn Scottish woodcarving traditions in the forest at Inshriach, close to Aviemore. Follow in the footsteps of the ancient Highlanders by replicating a 2000 year old Highlands cup of your own. With expert tuition from Wooden Tom, you will be guided to safely use hand tools such as a knife and axe to create your own Highlands kuksa cup or whisky quaich to take home. There is no need for prior experience as you will be guided step-by-step in all the green wood skills and tool techniques needed on the day. This is a great course to learn many of the grounding skills in one day which are transferable on to other carving projects.
